I haven't personally hunted caribou in BC but I use to work for a guy that had a guiding outift in the Itchi Mountains. There seems to be a large herd out there and I have seen some really big animals come out of that area. The access is mostly by horseback or fly in. Not only are there some record book caribou, but there are some very respectable moose in the lower elevations.

I've bought a caribou tag  in 2000.....

Saw a few animals, just nothing legal for me as I did not have an LEH and was restricted to 5 pt. bulls, and we sure didn't see any. :D My buddy got a young bull on the first morning of the season, August 15th. Ahhhh what a great guy to shoot one 5 miles from camp... It was a good experience and I look forward to going again, possibly in 2005. :)

BTW, my friends Dad shot a 5 pt. bull in Sept. 2003. A very beautiful trophy that is now away at the taxidermist's. Shot up in the extreme north west corner of BC on a fly-in backpack hunt. 8)

sorry I didnt read carefully NO its a open season up there on caribou, but 1 hell of a pack trip to get in there, was a awsome Boo for sure , when the plane landed back in atlin I beleive every guide outfitter and CO was waiting to see it , they figured it would hit #1 , no such luck but hey in the top 20 in any book is rocking in my world and top 10 is even better even if it is just for that scoreing period and top 20 in the all time books :D , I will see if I can get a few more photos of it from Dan and post them for you guys to have a better look

We did a Caribou hunt this year on horse back and didn't see a friggin boo.... Had some experiences with wolves and moose but no boo. We road in the Itcha Mt. Park, rented 8 horses and road in about 68km (13 hrs) of grooling seismic line. It was an unforgettable adventure. The one thing I learnt about this heard of boo, is that where they live can either make it unatainable or if you happen to find the heard very easy. In our case unatainable because they were unfindable. Get up to the top of a ridge and glass the valleys, if you see them you go get them but if you don't your going to the ridge as far as you can see with your Swarovski scope (most cases 3hrs one way on horse) and setting up to see if the heard is down the next valley. Yeesh my but gets soar again just thinking about it. Happy hunting.

We used to see lots of broken up herds of caribou near red redfern lake years back.
The turn off to get into that area is mile 179 Alaska hi way head in on the old seismic trail road to redfern lake ,it is around 56 miles to the lake.

We used to go for moose at around the first of Nov ,saw some nice bull caribou with cows but never wanted to shoot one.

Caribou are one of my faverate animals to hunt. I love the mountains/terrain you hunt them in. Besides, what other animal that you can hunt in the mountains-alpine will have 400+ inches of antler? None.

I hunted for 8 days in the Atlin area in 2006. This bull was the best I could come up with. Nevertheless, it was a great trip and I would do it again.
I have seen much better bulls while hunting sheep in the Cassiar Mountains.

Is the meat bad only when they are in rut? I've talked to different hunters and some say it's delicious and others say it's crap. By the way, when is the rut?

Don't shoot them much past the 20th of Sept or they start tasting Dank.

Stan Walchuck of Blue Creek Outfitters www.bcoutfitter.com (http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/www.bcoutfitter.com) . My father took Stan's summer course to learn the basics of packing horses. I'm a newbie at riding horse and dad's friend (now my new hunting partner also) doesn't at all, so the hunting trip was really a horse back adventure and man I'm telling you it's an amazing thing to do with your old man, we had a great time. I would have to caution that for a first adventure if your not completely pre-pared and have worked with horses you may be over your head (not sure of your background) Let me know if you have any more questions.
