I bought my 30-06 winchester from Canadian tire over 25 years ago for all of $294.00 (it was a loss leader) and I swear by it. The stock is an old fence post, it has a cheap tasco scope on it, and I have never lost an animal I have shot.

anything the 270 can do, the 30-06 can do better

both are great cartridges though.

if a guy only hunted deer sized game in open country, theres little need to look further than the 270 Win

I chose the 270win, well becuase I have one, the reason I picked this is because I wanted somthing flat shooting and mostly for deer sized game, even though the only thing I have shot with it is a bear:lol: Also it gives me an excuse to buy somthing bigger in the future, any excuse to buy another one. The reason I never bought a 30-06 is because its boring and every one seem to have one, Its is a hell of a cartridge and has killed every thing these last 100 years.
Cheers

But Like Matt88 said everyone and there dogs owns one hence the reason I am going to start hunting with my new 308Norma Mag, not many have this one;)

just to muddy the water-if you liked the 30 calibers,ie.30-06-would you choose that or a 300 magnum for moose?

It's a difficult one both heave proven their worth and are here to stay. I voted for the 30-06 because it is the most widely used calibre and has taken any game animal on the face of the earth but the very largest. The 270 is a terrific calibre for antelope and other open plains game, due to its flat trajectory. I like them both equaliy for their versatility and the huge variety of load configurations available for these calibers.

this poll is a little short sighted. guns are like golf clubs. no one would go golfing with one club, we need a set of guns, short range, mid range, long range and practice guns etc. small bore big bore lots and lots. all calibres have there purpose and lots overlap in use. we need as many as possible. i say have a 270 and a 30 06.

well as you can tell by my name i love the 270 it was my first cartridge and i will probly always own one i like the flat shooting of the 270 and well as posted early what ever the 30-06 can do the 270 can do but for wide range of bullet that would have to go to the 30-06 and for the hystory of the 30-06 also a hand up for that so for over all yes my vote would have to go to the 30-06 but you can never under estimate the 270 one off the best hunter jack o coner proved that. but as also as posted riffles are like golf clubs you can never have to many.

Between them two, if I could only have one, I'd have to vote 30-06 myself. It's just _the_ calibre of choice for an all-around gun, hands down in my book. It's just exactly big enough (and small enough) to very comfortably take any big game animal in north america; bears, deer, elk, moose, you name it, you can do a great job on it with a 30-06.

Don't getme wrong, I know for sure that a 270 is also very capable of taking all the same animals, but I think the 30-06 hits that 'sweet spot' between 'too big' and 'too small' a gun better than the 270 does.

Hello all ... this is my 1st post on HuntingBC.

I vote for .270 About as universal as they get and not everybody owns one as is the case with the .30-06

well as posted earlier I have owned both calibers as well as a 308 Norma Mag and the old 303 british. But the question is between the 270 and the 30-06. So I am thinking of getting back into rifles and because my son ( willyQ ) has a nice new 30-06 and does re-loads my vote is for the same. If he chose 270 and did all the reloading then that is what I would choose. That is how close I think these 2 calibers rate. Mike

I'm votin' for the 30/06, I just had my Rem. 700 30/06 restocked and fitted with a zorbathane butt pad and a muzzle break. It now feels like a .243 when you shoot it. My 7mm Rem. Mag might be getting lonely for awhile until the novelty of the refurbished 06 wears off.

I doubt most hunters coudl tell the difference between the cartrdiges if you handed them a loaded rifle and said "shoot that moose."

More importantly, I don't think the moose could tell the difference.

The argument shouldn't be what chambering but rather what rifle you like to shoot. Nonetheless, the simple fact of the matter is that less recoil translates into better accuracy with 95% of today's shooters. A 270 has less recoil than a 30.06 and consequently gets my nod.

Exactly!! I've been trying to explain that to the gf but to no avail.

''That one's the moose gun, this ones the deer gun, bear gun is over here, this is the mountain gun'' and so on.

By the way, I'd take the '06 for it's wider bullet selection.

my vote as you might have already guessed goes for the 30-06, thats what comes with me every time, and my 308 stays in its case, incase i do something bad to the 30-06.( always need a back up gun you just never now when a bad thing might happen)

If the 270win were introduced today, I think people would say "there are already a host of other guns that already do that".

Apples and oranges is the 270 and 270 WSM. Kinda like comparing a .22 Long and a .223 Rem!
