I was wondering how all you archery guys have the pins on your sights set. What yardage you have your top pin set at all the way down to the bottom pin.

20 -30 - 40 -50 - 60. I have the 60 so I can shoot the 55 yard 3D targets and split the pins. I wouldn't take a 60 yard hunting shot. Mike

I have five pins on my sight but only use the top three at 20,30,40.

I use a 5-pin, doesn't matter what brand. I started shooting at 10 yds for the first pin. Got it spot on and then started to back out, shooting at every 5 yds (with the same pin) making sure that the arrow hit in the same spot every time.

When it started to drop, or hit a little lower, I adjusted the second pin and shot to hit the bull. Then I repeated the first step using the sighted-in second pin until I needed to use the third pin. So on and so on to the end of the number of pins that you want to use.

Takes a bit of time but now I am sighted in for 15, 25, 35, 43, and 53.

Works for me.

I used to use four pins set at 10, 15, 20, 25 (from top to bottom). It also used to frustrate the hell out of me. Aiming at a deer at 20 yards all I could see was a clutter of pins.

For years now I only used one pin set at 15 yards with this pin I can hold dead center and hit the animal in the vital area from O out to 20 yards. I never use to take shots further than 20 yards.

Now I have been given a new sight to field test and keep. On this one I have three pins. The top pin is set at 10 yards the second pin at 20 yards and the bottom pin is set at 30 yards. For the past year I shoot at live animals out to 25 to 30 yards but still prefer under 25 yards. But I am already thinking of removing one pin and only use two in the future.

I have never been a gadget man, my advice has always been, the less stuff I use or ad to my bow the less can go wrong and the less I have to worry about stuff failing or falling off.

As a beginner I would not use more than three pins. I just never have seen any need for more pins. Not in the days when the bows where slower and certainly not now with the new high speed bows. Plus as I said more pins do clutter up the sight picture. More pins maybe fine for target archery where you can take all the time to choose and aim.
But hunting is different, the shooting is fast and often the animal comes from a direction you did not expect, leaving you barely time to think let alone choose which pin to use.

I have only been practicing with two pins. One at 15 and the other at 25, but after that mess I made up at Penticton I am going to go to at least 3 and maybe 4. My biggest problem is my darned eyes. I have trouble sighting in much over 25. Beyond that it is almost a "Hail Mary" shot! Fred
