About a year ago Mr. Bill posted on another forum, a wonderful photo of a Brant that the moment I saw it I knew I had to make that pose as a decoy for my Brant rig!

I love funky poses and love to carve rigs that belong together, the last few years I've barely done a bird for myself, focusing on keeping my very patient, customers happy. Last month a piece of white cedar I brought from New Brunswick told me it was time to add the Mr. Bill bird to my rig, 'cause March 1st (BC's Brant opener) wasn't coming any slower!

So here it is, ready to ride the waves (well almost) Monday and hopefully bring a pair of Brant to hand. A point of peculiarity, there are 3 different kinds of cedar on this bird, Eastern white, Yellow and Spanish! Painted in oils with a new technique I'm playing with on the breast, the sides I'm only so so with, but it'll look good on the water, I hope!

Nice work-do you just use any old type of cedar-like from Rona, or do you go out and buy specialty grades to widdle down?

Grandfather used to do the exact same thing, and I was tossing around the idea of trying it out.

I was thinking the same with two carved brant I got from a fellow, but decoys arent decoys until they get gunned over. Before then they are just carved wood on the mantel.

Very nice Ian. Great detail on the head, you got the same pose and attitude as in the picture. I can only imagine the hours you put in, I've been working on 4 Bufflehead and their not near the quality of your Brant and I've lost track of the hours so far. Will you post us a picture of your rig? Good luck.

And now it's a decoy!

Cainer, I get my cedar from the mill, usually rough cut 2x8's, but the bigger the better!

Heyblast, very hard to take a pic of a whole rig unless you set it up, my brant rig isn't anything special, dozen herters bodies, with my heads, dozen y boards, dozen carrylites, a couple of my cedar birds and a corker a buddy traded me

Here's some from this morning,
