Is there a map out there that shows logging roads in the Lake Cowichan/south Island area?

Hi PaintBaller,

Have you tried the "Vancouver Island Backroads Map Book"?

I have found it to be a fairly detailed mapbook and has lots of information of the cowichan/nitinat logging roads etc...

Hey PaintBaller,

I bought mine at a local gas station. Here is the website for the guys that make them.

http://www.backroadmapbooks.com/

They are like $20.00 or so but well worth it.

Happy Hunting!

Make sure you get the Fourth edition of the Vancouver Island one. It has topo info (i.e. elevations) the other editions do not. The new edition is great and you can tell what kind of terrain your up against. It is a must have item. I have one at home and one in my truck at all times.

Best to find the latest version, the one I bought for the lower mainland wasn't the latest and didn't have the GPS co-ords on the sides. This was a while ago.

You might have to shop around to find the 4th ed.

Chapters carries them as well.

The new maps have topo grid lines and color (green), which is nice, but have smaller scale, which shows less. Wish they would have the older larger scale maps, 1:100,000, with the newer topo style and grid lines. The new ones are 1:250,000 and show fewer logging roads. They are geared towards campers, mountain bikers, etc.

I find the new ones to be a bit of a compromise and they're not hunter friendly. Where's a good hunting cartographer when you need one?

So are the new ones even worth getting?

Go on Google Earth and look at the area you want to go. Print out area complete with roads and it is in 3-D.

I picked up a map called "guide to forest land of southern vancouver island" in the grocery store in Youbou. It's a little old and may no longer be available but its not too bad for general use. It covers Vitoria to the Alberni Inlet. If your travelling north through chemainus hang a left up the MacMillan haul road towards copper canyon and ask the gate keeper for a Weyerhauser tourist map ($2) this will cover the private lands (you could also try the Timberlands office across from the Nanaimo airport). There was also a Weyerhaeuser tourist map for TFL 44 (Alberni to Carmanah) but with the changes to the companies over the last few years I don't know where you'd be able to find one.

The newest and most up to date maps can be had from the BC Forest Service. Contact your local branch and tell them the area you are interested in. Be polite, and diplomatic and you will probably end up with a map that was updated within the last couple of months. Fred

I did the same sort of thing on a BC gov. map site and got a black and white satellite photo of the exact spot where we saw some deer at about 1:5000. It will give coordinates as well.

Do you have a link to this Gov. site?

The best backcountry road map's I've ever used. Under the Provincial Basemap, if you play with the settings, you can get full topo maps, every little skid or quad trail that you could imagine, cutblock info, and just generally gobs and gobs of great stuff. Between that, and Google Earth, I've gotten where I do 75% of my scouting without ever leaving home; and my time in the bush has gotten MUCH MUCH more productive in terms of number and quality of critter sightings.

Use the links on the lefthand side and root around a bit.

Hey brotherjack, you beat me to it! I do the same as you. Lots of map info on that site.

Ok I looked at that book and I wasnt really impressed i what i saw. Is there any place that I could pick up a forestry map that show all the logging roads in the Lake Cowichan area?

Fred

From your local Ministry of Forests office. You will have to look it up in the Blue Pages(govt listings) Fred

Do you just go in and get one or do you have to buy it?

To be perfectly honest, I don't remember. But if I did pay for it,it was cheap like me, or I would have remembered!;) Fred

Did you try the maps.gov.bc.ca website? It's the same maps you'll get from the ministry of forrests folks, for free, and with tweakable settings and zoom rates. Print them out when you get em like you like.... Much better option, IMHO anyway...

CanAm500

I tried playing with that, but it didnt show any of the roads.

What? You ain't doin something right, you can get every logging road, skid trail, and quad track that's ever been mapped off of that site.

Go directly here for just general logging roads on the south island (you can zoom in/out to whatever level of detail you want/need):

http://maps.gov.bc.ca/imf406/imf.jsp?site=mof_recst&extent=914197,356464,1221378,560061

And if that wasn't good enough, this following additional link has a BUNCH of data available - from topo maps to cutblock data to water sources and everything else you'd ever want to know to hunt a given area:

http://maps.gov.bc.ca/imf406/imf.jsp?site=lrdw_catalog_ext&extent=914197,356464,1221378,560061

Look under the "Layers" section, and you can turn on/off the view of gobs of usefull stuff (mostly you have to be zoomed in pretty tight before most of it becomes available). One of the tricker things to find though, is how to turn on the non-provincial logging road maps. In the Layers menu, if you look under "Legal Information and Administrative Boundaries", and then "Land Ownership and Status", you and turn on both of the "Forrest Tenure Road" options, it gets you what you're looking for in terms of roads/trails/etc.
