Some people may be aware that the Yukon implemented an Elk hunt for the first time this season. I recently came across a couple of photos of what is rumoured to be the first bull taken under the new season. Obviously it is the territory record ;).

Not yet, it is also featured in the B&C trophy watch. One post I found on the the intraweb said it is a 9x9 and scores 451" but that it is not a reliable source.

The email that I got said it went ~427 non-typ IIRC? Info seemed to be from the original sender.

I remember driving along the highway up there seeing a number of big bulls, took a few pics of them. Surprised to see it took this long for a season...this was like 10 years ago too!

Heck of a bull there!!

A friend of mine is a taxidermist and a guide in the Yukon....he sent the pictures last week......

It is not a farmed elk...it was an leh draw for elk (first time in the Yukon as someone else stated) and he was obvioulsy a local hunter....the bull is a 9x10 and has a gross score of 451"

I have met the guy that killed the bull and have mutual friends. Big7's info is correct. It was absolutely not a farm raised animal. He also killed a dall this year that grossed around 171". Quite a season so far!

That's what the email I got said too... I have a feeling it's even bigger than that though. I know the guy in the pic, the bull is legit.

A friend of mine who used to work up there used to send me photos of some pretty dandy bulls. Wonder if they will ever allow any non-resident permits? :)

Glad to hear a few guys can verify this bull and I'm not suprised that a couple of you know the lucky hunter...the hunting community certainly isn't that big I guess.

Anyone have any other photos of yukon elk? Since probably 99% of us are not residents of the yukon all we could do is drool over them anyways and hope that one day we can find a bull of that caliber right here in BC!

Just wait till they open a season in reg5. Same thing happens everytime a new elk season gets opened up somewhere. Monster friggin bulls hit the dirt for the first couple years, then they smarten up! Unbelievable bull!!

Maybe this will also be happening if the WK MU's open up for GOS six points as proposed...I wonder where all the elk hunters will go if that happens...you may just see a few hogs come out in the first couple of years.

Saw these pictures on another forum actually a couple weeks ago. A guy from the Yukon posted them. Mentioned something about he knew the one guy and he was out bugling, and he called in this monster. So he called his friend who had a tag for the area. The next day they got him.

Elk were introduced here in the 1950's. Since then they have slowly increased, and seem to be stable population wise. One huge problem is that these Elk are infested with Winter Tick, and there is a very real danger of this parasite being transferred to Moose populations.
Common concensus here is that this draw hunt was politically motivated, as a few of the "farmers" (hay growers) here complained that the Elk were grazing on their fields and ripping down wuire fencing. Classic case of agricultute spreading into wild animal habitat. Many of these farmers have close ties to the Territorial Gov. Squeaky wheel gets the grease as it were.
Anyway, over 4000 people applied for the 40 permits. Crazy popular. This year was pretty easy from all reports i have heard, as these Elk, while certainly not being tame, were not particularily afraid of people. Thats going to change IF this hunt is to be continued. If it is, its going to be drastically reduced numbers wise. There were some real hogs out there, as the pictures prove, and some folks had some great hunts this year. I didn't apply, but my wife did, she didn't get one:-(

Hadn't seen that article. I had been told over 4000 people applied for the permits, and that sounded crazy, and apparently it was i see.
