I went out Goose Hunting with my brother and another two guys this morning. As the day progressed we saw many flocks but they were all on a mission to some other unknown destination. Lots of other hunters out by the sounds of things and they were having a little better success, but that is the way it goes sometimes. Later in the morning I caught a glimpse of movement in the semi hilly area. As the object came closer I noticed it was a coyote. I told everybody not to make any noise and I started trying to do a call using your hand that I saw on a predator hunting video. It seemed to catch the coyote's attention but it was very cautious. As it moved around our spread it eventually got close enough and made a mad dash for the bushes. I smacked it with a BBB 12gauge 3'' at ~50 yards at full run and it went down like a tonne of crap. We managed to tag 4 ducks as well, so it was definitely a good day waterfowl hunting!

I don't have the regs in front of me, but it may be they have lumped coyotes in with the other big game for the shot size.

If they have, the reg really deons't make any sense.

as i read dirtys story and for some reason i have bubbles voice in my head. it wouldnt matter if he killed it with a potatoe gun. i hate those stupid dogs.and bsa you are right, but i would rather use the 1996 regs instead.

as a note, the most popular coyote shotgun load sold in the US is HeviShot 'Dead Coyote' load featuring approx 50 'T' size hevishot pellets

the #1 buck rule is ******ed, a 30 lb thinskinned yotie doesnt need a deer load

I just looked in the regs and BSA30-06 is right it says see notes #1 wich I quote:

shotgun must have a bore size of 20 gauge or larger and use shells of shot size No.1 buck or larger.

If BSA hadn't brought the subject up I would have never know the difference and made the same mistake. I guess the reason for the larger shot would be to ensure a quick death with max penetration.

No Big deal, we all learned something today and that's what this site is all about. It just goes to show you that when you think you know all the in's and outs of the hunting regulations something else comes up that you didn't know about.

Hmmm ...I never seen that about yotes ... and here I carried special 000 buck loads when field shooting and thought they were suffice.

But a reg is a reg everyone. I'm sure my 165gr. .06 load can drop a bufalo, even though smaller than what's required.

Good point brought to the attention of everyone bsa30-06. I'm sure more than just myself didn't know. Time for some #1 buck loads.

1996, note, a person useing a shotgun for hunting deer, blackbear, cougar and wolf must use a bore size of 20 gauge or larger and use shells of shot size 1 buck or larger. no mention of yotes. also in region #8 you could take 2 whitetails. 6-12 and 6-13 had an antleress deer season.also in region 2-2 to 2-19 we had a archery only season from aug 26 to sept 9. i wonder where that went now i have my bow, 2-16 also was antlerless. we have lost a bit of ground here.

Well ... had a peek at my old regs. They changed it in the '99-'00 regs.

Noticed I've got a extra '95-'96 ... great shape, small tear on front cover and excellent shape '96-'97 when they changed to the glossy cover. Anyone a collector?

btw - ruger how far back your regs go?

The bison rule, as wel as this #1 buck rule on coyote, makes ZERO sense.

As FIrebird pointed out, the "DEAD COYOTE" shotgun ammo uses T shot. I wouldn't be surprised if the T or even #4 buck is more humane that #1 buck.

The bison rule makes it legal to use a 175gr Ballistic tip in a 7RM, but illegalto use a 160gr X bullet in the same rifle??

but gate house they use it in the usa, there rules are different then ours. and i wish we had some of there rules.

Went back out for a night shoot and the birds didn't start flying until just before the end of legal shooting light. Thankfully we ended up pulling in 2 geese and smacking them. It was a good night to be out for the last day of goose season. By the way, I was unaware that it wasn't "legal" to shoot 'yotes with the BBB shot. Personally I felt it was adequate so I made the shot. In the future I will carry the proper shot for disposing of the doggies. Thanks for all that cleared the legalities up for me!

Congrats on the 2 geese dirty.I only mentioned the shot size because i thought it was worth mentioning i have no doubt that your bbb did the trick just like you said, but would hate to see somebody trying to explain that to c/o.Once again congrats on a sucessfull day.

Good job on the coyote Dirty. Also on the ducks and geese. We dropped a lot of coyotes with lead BBs over the years( and missed less than with Buckshot). They would roll at 50 yards no problem.
