The 1000 yard shoot in Burns Lake is on May 6th and 7th. All the info can be found here http://www.bctsa.bc.ca/tsa_cal.html For those of you from out of town there are usually local members at the range for the week before the shoot to help sight in and practice. Keep them in the X ring

I've always wanted to try this shoot.

I guess it's probably been debated but the rules for hunting rifle say you have to use factory ammo. I haven't bought factory ammo for my hunting rifles in years! Perhaps the rules should read "within factory dimensions" or "must feed from a magazine" (in repeaters)

Anyone know if any factory 260 rem or 7-08 is up to the task.

There is a "Hunter" and a "Sporter" class. Same rifle but one allows handloads. As for a 260rem or 7-08 as long as there still supersonic at the target, (1049yds) it will do the job. You can always borrow a bench gun and enter all events. We mostly all load lots just for that reason.

Is there a common caliber, or is there a large variety of guns?

well I put this question to a gunsmith who builds guns and his answer was to " buy a 116 savage .308. their is nothing you can do to a .308 cartrage that has not already been done.Look for me next year :-D

A few years back I was hunting just North of Burns Lake (Auger Mn) and met a fellow from town who owns the local gun/gunsmith shop. He told me a 308 win. wouldn't cut it at 1000m's.

I now understand that he was not 100% correct. In fact several long range matches in the world are shot with the 308. It's challenging because it's only a marginal round for that distance, however with a long barrel to squeek every last fps out of the correct choice of projectiles it can maintain supersonic out there.

If thats Bill you met what he probably meant was a .308win takes a fair bit of work to get it competitive at 1K compared to what else is out there. Theres only a few bullets that will stay supersonic at that range and then only if loaded to the gonads. Many long range matches have been won with the good old .308 but if starting from scratch it wouldnt be my choice thats for sure. One of the regulars at the Burns shoot has a .308 which Ive borrowed on a few occasions and it a shooter for sure.

Is there a common caliber, or is there a large variety of guns?

6.5 x 284 is a becoming a pretty common chambering for 1000 yard matches. The club record was shot last year with a 17 lb custom 6.5x284 - 5 shot group of 4.25''. 4 of the shots were within 2 5/8'' and one flyer.
I have seen some very good groups shot with factory 7mm Rem Mag ammo, 10-12''. Also the 243 WSSM put up some good factory class groups as well.

I fairly recently aquired a 260 rem. It will push hand loaded 139 Lapua's at ~2730 fps and I've grouped 5 shots at 500m's (the farthest I have shot) inside 4". I don't know what this rifle will do at twice the distance and with factory ammo, (by charts don't go that high). As far as I read, this rifle would make the hunter class with the exception of my ammo.

I'd like to try to make it, especially if I could combine it with a fishing or perhaps spring bear hunt.

Steel Ram here is a link to a online ballistics program that will get you close, then fine tune it when you here. http://www.eskimo.com/~jbm/ballistics/traj_basic/traj_basic.html

Gus there have been many different calibers used in the past. From 6mm, 243, 25-06, 6.5-55, 6.5-284, 6-284, 270, 30-06, 7mm,7mm-stw, 300 mag and short mag, 280ac. and 338. Use the heaver bullets for that caliber and a fast twist to keep them stable out to 1000 yards.

Absolutly bring the smoke poles. Ive been trying to talk a buddy into puting together his Rem rolling block for long range for a long time.

Actually the 308 Win has no problem staying supersonic out past 1000yds:

These are all realistic speeds from the 308 Win:

165gr Ballistic tip @ 2700fps = 1248fps @ 1000 yds

150gr Sierra Match King @ 3000fps = 1366fps @ 1000 yds

150gr Sierra Match King @ 2900fps = 1312fps @ 1000 yds

190gr Sierra Match King @ 2600fps = 1369 fps @ 1000yds

Supersonic is ~ 1100fps

If you should use a 308 be sure to check the twist rate of your rifle, and use a bullet that will stabilize with that twist. There has been other shooters try 308s and find that the bullets are tumbling when they get to the target. A remington 40X shoots a sierra 155gr palma bullet very well out to 1000 yds. I have used a sierra 175gr with varget that shoots well.
I would like to see a Quigly gun shoot too. If you don`t use it in the shoot bring it and try it before or after the shoot.

Hey Moose I didn`t get a chance to talk to you much today at Bill`s shop. Did you get sighted in at the 1000yd. range? I am still trying out some loads with 142gr. sierra bullets in my 6.5-284.:|

Sure did. Got some bullet problems though. I bumped the shoulders to much and now the headspace is out. Im going to use a 7mag expander button to make a false shoulder and fire form them back to chamber dimensions. Windy as hell out there. Blew my chrony over and buggered it.

I'd love to try this with some of my old Milsurps...such as my .303 P14, and 6.5 Swede...Iron sights though...so I'd need someone to spot for me. Hehehe.

We can always find somone to spot for you, usually several guys want to see what any kind of rifle will do. We had a fellow with an SKS Flip up the rear sight crank it up to 1000 meters and shoot OVER the target. Adjusted the sights down and proceded to ridle the target.

All this sounds like fun, I hope I can find the time to go.

Congrats to the winners.
We had some cool temps and tricky winds to contend with, but there were some very good groups and scores shot last weekend.
looking forward to doing it again.
