blahhhhhh , like any animal you shoot it in the right spot they die, as for what time of year , well spring hunters are usually after the hides as there at there prime right out of the den. in the fall a good berry bear is about as choice eating as it gets without a doubt .

I hunt em mainly in the spring, they seem to be easier to find, from mid May to early June. Just put a well contructed bullet, 7mm 160 gr. as a solid minimum, into the vitals, and you'll kill them without trouble.

I’m kind of curious about gutting a bear too. I’ve never seen one done before. I’ve gutted a dozen or so deer but never a bear. My wife and I have eaten bear sausages and pepperoni and we both love it. It gives me another opportunity to spend more time in the woods in the spring.
Is there a thick layer of fat on the belly side too in the spring? Hopefully I’ll find out this spring when the Island crew takes to the woods. Good luck for everyone that’s going out this spring.

Marc.

thanx for the replies and info guys...i think i m pretty set on finding a bear this year...and seeeing as we are allowed 2 i think i will look in the spring and then again in the early fall...i shoot with an old british 303 usually shooting 150 but last year was 180 grain bullets...do u think that will do the trick? thanx once again for the replies...i love this site!!!

Gutting a bear is really no different than gutting anything else as far as the general viscera are concerned. If you are keeping the hide, which you probably are, then you will want to look on the internet for a bear skinning guide......before you go out and kill and gut one.

Yeah the .303 British will work, with either weight bullet, but the 180 gr. will give you more penetration and a higher chance of an exit hole, which could be essential if the bear makes it off into some thick brush. 8O

I'd reccomend the Remington load, 180 gr. CorLokt, I was backing up my friend when he plugged this brute @ 30 yards with his p14 .303 :) (it took 3 shots from him, and 4 outta my 7mm Rem Mag w/ 175 gr. X's to kill the *******, but we won't get into that  )

Hey Amphib....you planning on blowing that bear into next week or what??   You can however use that 450 to back me up once you and Carolynne have bears down. :) Carolynne gonna use the 303? I could lend her my .270 when you come down, give her a little extra range.

only using the .450 because I can't afford a .458 Lott yet

Carolynne will be packing the .303 or the 20ga with slugs. al depends what she can shoot better. my .303 is about 9lbs and the LOP is a little long for her, we'll see...

as for backing you up - no worries - always wanted to watch an archery hunt :D

I don't even gut a bear. I was told a different way and its always worked for me. I skin the bear right where it falls or on the road if its easier. Then I cut the front shoulders off and then the rear quarters. Then I flip it over on the hides and remove the back straps. There isn't enough meat in the ribs to warrant taking them.
I have found that there is little or no fat on a spring bear whilr the fall bears have a thick layer.
I hope this helps... :)

Hey 3killslookin4more I think we should get one in each season and get a grant from the government and do a study on the table fair from each season. You do a study in region 3 or 8 and I'll do one in region 2 I mean they give money away for worse things right? I think we should have a province wide study and get all of HBC members some free government loot.

Does this mean I have to keep my night job? . I really need to shoot something. Hey bones the suit thing sound good, but me thinks we're too late.  some other dummy beat us to it. But think on the bright side, he spent much loot on the idea and we would still rather shoot bears anyhow. April 1st won't come soon enough. Nap time!!!!!!!!!!!!

I heard that "other dummy" is DOA after he finaly found a grizz that wanted to play with him, I cannot confirm this but would sure like to get the last laff in his quest for stupidity and making himself part of the food chain , a good government job would be steralizing bears , say 20% in a given area to slow the reproduction down for a few years , or lift the hunting restrictions off of them again, make it so you can trophy hunt black bears again and do not have to remove the meat...lots of people eat it as we do to but alot of people stopped bear hunting when that rule was imposed , do to the physical labour involved in packing out meat when they just wanted the hides , another system to create a few more hunters would be to legalize the sale of gals, make it so you have to turn them into the CO office and they give you 50 bucks for it (encouraging people to hunt them again)

you look at how many bear hunters there actually are left in BC , its dam scary that the bears can reproduce 3-4x faster than they are hunted , there is a major lack of controled population here and until the government does something about it more and more people will get attacked and more and more encounters will happen with pets being killed and bears in towns

AS WELL stiff penalties need to be dished out to the F@#KIN ******S that stop on the roads and feed bears , I say if there from Canada and cought confinscate there vehicle if there from out of country escorte there dumb asses home and slam the door on them .

And when these anti bear hunting groups step up and start squaking I say slap them with a bigass fine and throw the leader in jail for 30 days for interfearing with the hunting rights of Canadian citizens , its time to stop pussyfooting around the problems and step up to the plate and deal with the issues at hand and not because its a election year either

okok so I had a political colapse moment haha..id still put greenpeicers in jail !and forse them to eat moose and bear meat for there stay or starve to death

and we wont get into the same gender mariges ..thats just WRONG

I shot a nice 3 year old bear last fall with my .50 cal Hawkins replica black powder using a 385 grain Buffalo bullet. Nailed him just behind the sholders and he never even took a step. The bullet mushroomed out so big that it would cover a 25 cent piece. The meat was excellent and I will be definitely taking another on this spring with my bow if I can find a nice color phase bear. I will shoot another in the fall with the bow or black powder.

yes there is a benifet for spring bear hunting. Thats when they come out of hibernation and have the thickest fur. And if you have a good caliber rifle and a good quality bullet with a well placed shot... you can be sure that, that bear will drop on it's tracks.

The bear I have post in the gallery, taken by my son was at about 75 yds. on a 30 degree downhill slope with his .257 Roberts, hand loaded with a 117 gr. Hornady SP. Bear went 25 yards before piling up. However the sucker got his $hit back together and raised his head. My .06 put an end to any ideas....especially with the thick alder growth that was 15 yards away.

Gut them like a deer and if you need to drag them any distance and want the hide, slide them on a 8x6 tarp.

Darcy...if your interested in a spring hunt, there's a few others this way keen to organize an outing.

Not being a bear hunter myself.... would you not wanna use a heavier caliber rifle, with a 180+ grain bullet :?:

thumbs up to your son nevertheless, he proved that u can drop one with a small caliber

there will also be a get together spring bear hunt near Prince Goerge this spring , Anphib being the host and setting up the camp areas , should be a awsome hunt with everything from 30-30s to bows showing up , and I am sure there is room for more who wish to come and hunt

back to Freshtracks , thats a awsome litle caliber your son has , 257 has been a great killing machine for alot of years, quite a few guys have varients of it here from the roberts to the weatherby and all knock the hell out of moose , a good buddy took his bull at 500 yards on a rangefinder this fall over a medow , 2 in the boiler room with that 257WBY and the bull just laid down in its tracks

Ok everyone...it sounds like we have lots of interest.

Now lets pick a date and a spot.

...I've taken good bears in the top end of the Nahatlatch right into the first weekend of June from the beginning (but slower) May, I find for the East Anderson you need to be there earlier, with it peaking the middle of May.

Deer_Hunter101...that Roberts is pushing hot cakes, my son is a little more comfortable shooting it than the .06. I back him up, but he's done the job thus far. But yes, I like to anchor them bruins on the spot. Again proper placement and a good constructed bullet are the essential parts.

I'll have enough meat from my last bear to last a while so I don't really need to hunt bear this spring....But seeing as a know where a few trophy size bears are and have been taken (600lbs plus) I might just buy a new feezer or just give more meat away. Can't wait to meet up with those big fellas with my Big Bore!!!
