I tried sighting my sight in today on my brand new Remmington Model 710 at a gravel pit. Its way off, Ill have to go to the range and sight it in.

was it bore sighted when you picked it up? and did you start at 25 yards? those are the first steps with a new rifle, did you season the barrel? IE.clean after every shot for the first 20. then after every five for the next fifty.

Yes it was bore sighted. We cleaned it up really good (took almost 3 hours the first clean). The seasoning of the barrel is new to me, never heard of that.

What distance did you start shooting at. bore sighting only garuntees you get on the paper at 25 yards.

Set target up at 25yrds , put the rifle in a vice are a good rest pull out the bolt look down the boar line it up with the center of the target , now look in you'r scope and line it up with the center .. That should at least get you in the paper and save some ammo.

Also make sure the bases/mounts are good and tight.

sorry to hear about your misfortune of owning a 710

I really dont think breaking in the barrel (*seasoning*) of a 710 will help much at all...

get it on paper at 25 yards, zero @ 25

move to 100 yards, and make sure you dont heat the barrel up too much, and that you got a steady rest.

good luck

I started at 100 + yards. Im going to take it to the range over the holidays and get it sighted in real good.

710s arent a very high quality rifle, topped with a low quality scope. The 'Bic Lighter' of the rifle world. As long as you're happy with it, that's all that matters.

I hope you get it shooting straight :)

Well I really like my 710, its my first centerfire rifle. Gotta get it sighted in first.

Congrat's on your first centerfire rifle. It doesn't matter how much your gun cost, it's what you can do with it that matters. I know guys with used $200 savages that can get holes touching each other at 100 yards all day long. Good luck.

Nothing - just the normal Remington bashing going on.

The 710 is what it is - the cheapest package Remington can market. You either like it or you don't. Kind of like Savages. I guess that could be called Savage bashing.

Actaully I found out why its so cheap. There is not one hand on the gun while it is being made, in other words; its all done by machine. And just to let you know, I paid a good sum of money for the model 710.

I have found this works well:

Allowing for the amount the scope is above the bore line you want it to shoot about one inch low at 25 yards to get you close at 100.

I bought a remington model 710 in 7mm a couple of years ago.... Mine was a decent shooter with 1" groups or better at 100 yrds. I had to get a better scope though, the one that came with it wouldn't hold its zero. One day its dead on the next its off a mile, figuratively speaking of course! But I have shot 3 moose with it all with one ashot kills to the neck. I hope you enjoy your new firearm!:-P

Alright, Ill keep that in mind for next time guntech.

Accuracy-freak; If thats the case for my rifle, I have a .22 scope (same power) sitting in my closet. I just want the thing it be sighted in.

I'll bet most animals that are shot could not even tell if they were hit with Remington Model 710 or a fancy super-sub-MOA custom rifle!!

Akula
12-12-2005, 12:49 AM
Just curious as to what SUB-MOA stands for?

todbartell
12-12-2005, 02:32 AM
MOA = minute of angle

basically means 1" groups at 100 yards

2" groups at 200 yards

5" groups at 500 yards

etc

etc

Well as of right now my rifle is shooting 8 inches to the right. So I dont think I will be hitting anything being off 8 inches.

Gotta hit it first...

And if your bolt falls out or seizes when you are attempting to chamber a round, or if your gun won't chamber your factory ammo, then it get's difficult.;-)

Do not use the .22 Scope at all it will not take the recoil of you'r rifle ... For around a $150 bux look into the Bushnell Dusk to Dawn series there a awesome scope for the money , since is x-mas soon also the Elite series are worth checking out ... Just Boar site like i told you at 25yrds , line it up a few Inches High and then try at 100yrds do the adjustments and make her about 2" high so then 250yrds will be easy!!! Good luck.

CanAm500

Alright ill do that Dayto!

Ill just try this scope i got on it, the one that came from remington.

Whats with everyone not liking the model 710?

todbartell
12-12-2005, 12:49 PM
Ive never shot or owned one, but going by what others say who have seen or shot them, there is some problems with them being reliable. Bolts stuck after firing a round, failing to chamber factory ammo, overall poor fit and finish, etc.

For $300 a guy can buy a Stevens 200 and use the leftover money to buy a scope slightly better than what comes on the 710.

710 isnt just the bargain some people, including Remington, think it is.

I hope yours works out for you, good luck at the range.

Yeah, Im with exbcguide. Ive only shot mine twice, but I havent had any problems. About the bolt gettting stuck, it is a 60 degree bolt instead of the normal 90 degree, so that might be the case....but i dunno.

Exbcguide, what caliber do u have your 710 in?

I have taken lots of critters with this gun, sure its a bottom line gun but its not as bad as it is being made out to be.
I have it in the .270 as well,I shoot walmart ammo 150s.

Hey exbcguide, do you know how much a spare 710 magazine goes for?

ICPAINTBALLER,
I purchased a Rem 710 (30-06) as part of an estate sale and while it was not my favorite gun it wasn't all that bad either. I shot the thing with some old Federal bonus pack ammo (180gr I think) and was rewarded with some 1.5-1.75" groups.
When I first pulled the gun from it's case I received some serious ribbing from my shooting buddies (I have some very expensive rifles). The ribbing stopped when I got on the 400 yard (6") gong and then proceeded to hit the thing with every last round remaining in the bonus pack! I promptly put the (smoking) gun back in its case while announcing that my associates should spend less on their guns and more time practicing!

I (we) place way to much emphasis on sub-minute accuracy where hunting guns are concerned. Simple fact: A real two minute gun will shoot within 3 inches of point of aim 300 yards out.

From a rifleman's perspective the 710 has few redeeming qualities and the "optics" included are unacceptable....From a hunter's perspective the 710 will put game in the freezer.

I picked up a Dusk to Dawn in 3x9x40 with the BDC for my Mk5 Weatherby. I went with that one because of the reliability of my other Bushnell scopes and the aftersales service one gets. Fred
