Dragon iced over Saturday night/Sunday morning. There is the odd open spot where warm water springs are up-welling. Should build if the temps go to -16c as predicted.

Can you ice fish on that lake? I have seen pictures of monster trout that came out of there.

Gonna be a sweet hardwater season. Check out www.iceshanty.com (http://www.iceshanty.com) if you're really into the ice fishing. Great site. Team BC needs you for the tourney!! I hope to make one trip there and to Ten Mile this winter.

The tourney is an online tourney at the site www.iceshanty.com (http://www.iceshanty.com) Ten Mile Lake is just north of Quesnel and has some good fishing. Never ice fished it but I did really well there in the summertime. I will probably go to Dragon in late Jan or early Feb (I hope). Yeah seabass there's some huge fish in there. I lost one in september that probably would have gone close to 8 lbs. He just took off running and then came back on me and I could reel fast enough. Ripped off like 80 feet of line and backing in his first run. I got one look at him right before he threw the hook. Figured him at about 28" although I could be way out. Big trout.

I own a house on Dragon too. I'm selling it in the spring, if anyone may be interested.

You know, it's kinda funny. I've only ever fished Dragon twice during the winter and was skunked in both instances. People I know that fish it on a regular basis tell me it is quite the rush to hook an eight or ten pound fish that you have to try to bring through an 8 inch hole. Gives a new meaning to "fish on"!

I like ice fishing for Kokanee and the lake of choice for me is Tyee, further south toward Willie's Puddle. The ice has yet to form on that lake as it is some what deeper than Dragon and takes longer for the water to cool. Tyee has rainbows in it too and they can get to a fair size also. It also has Burbot or fresh water Lings.

There are warm water upwellings in Dragon, so you have to be somewhat cautious in the early part of the season. At the moment, these upwellings are still small areas of open water.

Talked to some guys who were on the lake today and they say ice is about 3" now. Remaining cold -15 or so . You will see the huts out there pretty soon. Mike

That sounds like fun...thought the only place that had ice huts was the prairies. Does anybody rent heated ones?

I just suggested this exact same thing to a guy, in Kamloops, on another site. He is a prospector and was wondering what to do over the winter. The shacks wouldn't have to be too large or fancy, just practical. Fred

Of course if you want to can always use your vehicle for a hut. We probably hear about one vehicle a year breaking thru the ice..lol

Ice is 6 inches thick out front. I haven't fished it yet, two of my co-workers were out front day before yesterday. They hooked on and lost it and that was it for the rest of the afternoon.

Cant quite imagine a trout over 6 pounds thru the ice. I'd need a bigger rod. Got one of them little micro ice rods.

Wow, that is great fishing. Where abouts is that lake? (can you tell I am dying to go ice fishing?) In the Okanagan it has been so mild the last few years I have not been out ice fishing at all.

East of quesnel. Follow the signs to "robert's roost" if you're coming from the south. We're all iced up here. Just bought a new 6" auger. Again I'm going to rep www.iceshanty.com (http://www.iceshanty.com)

What are the roads like into that lake?

PGKris
12-28-2005, 02:09 PM
Probably gravelled and sanded. Not exactly a remote lake. Just outside of downtown quesnel.

Ya it is. Although paved or not, I would drive just about anywhere in my car :D

The road is paved and plowed and sanded. The road that you want is called Quesnel Hydraulic Rd at the end of the long straight stretch from the top of Dragon Lake Hill,or at the corner after you pass CT from the south. Quesnel Hydraulic Rd. takes off at Franks Supermarket where you will want stop and get some krill and hooks and weights that you forgot. Take a left exit from the parking lot between Murphy's and Franks and go 3.2 klics to the boat launch. Lots of parking and walk out on the ice. 75 to 100 ft offshore should do it, you can pick other spots also. Then, when you're finished for the day, stop at Murphy's Pub for snacks and a brewski. Say hi to Bill Bailey, he's the owner, tell him I sent you. Did I tell you about the fish my neighbour lost, got his rod, too big to get through the hole. Bonne fishing!
