Is there really any offseason for waterfowlers? Just a few months where you cant shoot anything, but still thinking the whole time about the fall.

After building and then expanding our duck blind over 2 or 3 years in the offseason, my brother decided we needed a bigger and better one. Becuase a 4-5 man just wasnt enough room I guess.

So he tore down the old one which we just hammered posts in then build around so it stood around 7 feet tall with a roof. Now the new ones gonna be 2 feet in the ground and only 4.5 feet about the ground so it should help conceal it easiler with the grass around it.

Probably gonna put a little stove, or generator in there aswell, lots of room for anything we decide.

Still to be added:

- plywood roof
- dog door and bench to sit higher up
- chicken wire around the outside to hold grass
- some gun holders and shelves for stuff

Crazy Farmer,
That is not a duck blind it's a condominium :lol::lol:
Had a yard sale at our house today, many flocks of migrating Specks
and Lesser Canada's going over. It was really hard to concentrate on
setting up for our sale. God I wish we could pound those Specks ln the October season!! How about you guys on the mainland seen many
migrating geese yet??
Cheers Field Marshal.

All the canadas and lessers are long gone, only a small number of geese are pairing up now in the sloughs and theres a pair at our duck pond that looks like they've made a nest on a hill in our field.

Hopefully it'll work out without coyotes getting to them. I may have to thin the yote population here to let the goslings survive.

I hear you on the specks, hopefully their population keeping rising and merits a season or atleast be included in the dark goose limit with canadas. Have a 5 dark goose bag limit with 1 or 2 limit of specks under that 5.

Maybe the corrugated fiberglass would make a better roofing?

Looks good, how ya gonna keep it from filling up with water? K

Yeah probably, I think we have some in the shop somewhere kicking around maybe not enough though. Probably better long term, the plywood would soak up the water and rot overtime, but we do staple or hook grass to the top aswell so we'd have to figure something up for the fiberglass. Also once we put grass onto its like another layer of insulation it keeps the plywood drier.

I'm still thinking about options for putting a pit blind in one of the corn fields. We've thought about it, would be way better for concealment but we've been a bit worried about someone else driving a tractor over it, I think I'll figure something else this season. Maybe dig a couple holes and put big single man drums in the ground.

Well we were going to put a few layers of plastic down but have realized if the water level goes above it then the water will sit inside. The spot it'll be in already has quite a high level. It floods the old blind anyways, so we're used to wearing waders in there. just dont drop the gun in the water.

Hey Crazy Farmer, that looks really neat! Oh, and when you're doing the interior, paint the drywall nice bright inviting colours... and go with the fluorescent lighting.:lol:

Yep, a cold wet retriever is never a good thing. Just gotta shoot more ducks to keep him busy and warm. ;-)

An update.

Got the back and side walls on, Turned out we have a bunch of old fiberglass boards from our old barn and they're already weathers and yellow/green so it'll be great for camoing. Alot lighter then plywood, and wont rot in a few years of being in the ground wet. Be a good roof too and wind protection.

Looking good!

You might as well go the extra step and do something to protect the lower parts from rotting. That fiberglass is a great base colour!

Nice hide Adam. You might consider using 6" concrete mesh instead of chicken wire for grassing in---it's a lot easier to weave grass/cattails into, and much sturdier.

Crazy_Farmer
04-21-2009, 02:37 PM
Yeah thats a good idea, We have a bunch of different mesh here, lots of chicken wire because of our old chicken run but I know we have bigger holed wired kicking around, we wont need much just in the front. I'm stuck in kamloops for atleast another two weeks so hopefully Matt does some work while I'm away.

Thought we'd need atleast 6 guys to haul this thing onto a trailer or truck bed but Dad and I figured something out with only the two of us. We managed to semi lift roll it into place, egyptian style rolling the pipes underneath the blind, weighs atleast 400+ pounds easy.

I really have to see this when you are done. Agree or disagree talk about pimp my blind. I hope you enjoy, that all that matters. It is not a project I would do but I admire your determination to follow a thought and plan through, good on you.

Oh its just a bit of an upgrade, only thing different from the last one is its in the ground, and designed better.

Here's a thought... if you go cut some willow whips (on an angle) and stick them in the ground around the blind, most of them will take and start to grow and you'll have some natural camo that you will just need to trim! I had an island blind like that back in Ontario, all you had to do was give it a hedge trimming each fall!

You might also think about some boards in the bottom and a sump since you know it's going to get wet, might as well go all the way!

Yea we did that a bit last in our last blind, theres a couple willow trees right behind the blind so before opener we'd cut a bunch and blend it in the best we could. Dont worry by the time its done, we've back filled the back and sides in so the ground will sloop up to the blind so it'll look like a hill once the grass grows on it.

How about one on floats for the brant season.

Crazy_Farmer

Well some more work done today. Cut some 3/4" rubber mats for the floor. We know the water will rise so to keep the mud or muck down these will help. Also put the chicken mesh up, banged on the roof, and planted some willow shoots in the side. Lots more in the way of camo'ing still to be done. Lots of green and brown paint on the 2x4s and lots of foilage around the front, the grass will grown pretty tall in back.

It's a shame to see that someone has tracked mud onto those nice mats! Better talk to the housekeeper.

I should of been posting some more pictures but I've been to tired to that last couple weeks driving back and forth from home to Kamloops.

The islands been 1/2 cleared aswell as about a 1/4 acre around the pond the grounds been disked to dirt.

There was a hen with a bunch of chicks pretty good sized aready swimming around and hiding in the island this past week, and I noticed a few other moms and hatches at our other ponds. So thats always good to see.

Well if the corns not off before sept 10th I may just have to shoot this one. Its BIG. And using our duck pond as a watering hole. I may have to think about bringing protection next time I work on the blind.
