Would a 22 long be good for Yotes and Bobcat :?: Is there a good 22 bullet available:?:

.22 rimfire is legal for both bobcat and coyote

I'd say OK for the Bob's, but not so good for yotes. In either case, I would look for sumthin' that has a little more push,,, but that's me. If it's all ya got and don't want something else, have at it, but with an understanding of the limitations that the .22LR has (read close shots).

Maybe consider a 12ga??? But be aware that there is shot size restrictions for yotes.

I disagree..... .22 will work good with a good expanding bullet at close range. But under 50 yards would be best.

If you want a real good coyote caliber go up to a hot .300 load or my personal favorite, my .338 with 250gr Nolsers! That drops them pretty quick.

I think we're saying the same thing.... x2!

That may well be but his question was if it would be "good " so I guess that would be all in ones perception of good .... will a .22 kill a yote ? for sure ... one thru the lungs and it will wander away and die eventually .
I think there are enough guys out there shooting grouse with .22's and having them fly off (wounded) . So while some snipers (Mr Dean) could make that precision "tween the eyes " shot , I wouldnt recomend it for everyone

a 22 rimfire does it without question  and it kills them dead as long as you do your part.

Not a problem at all as long as the shot is a reasonable range and spot on and you can always double tap if you have a semi .

Some good ammo out there that will do the job dont use the subsonic or standard velocity stuff.

I've never looked for anything more than an accurate round, as I haven't hunted more than rabbits and grouse w/ a .22LR. Got any ammo suggestions for this fella?

If I had to use a 22LR for coyotes I would load it with CCI Velociters and keep shots inside 75 yards, and aim for the brain.

A better choice would be a 22WMR which will give you a bit more range to about 125 yards. Again I would stick to head shots unless it was fairly close then Id tuck one in behind the shoulder

a better choice would be a 223 or 22-250 for the average hunting type shot. It can be effective to 300+ yards if you can shoot well enough

IMO 40 yards is stretching it for a 22lr, cat or dog. Too much can go wrong, and the chances of a still target are slim.
But everyone has a standard of how they like to get it done, mine is .243.

I have used remington Viper and Yellow jacket bullets and they will both do the job but the yellow jacket does it better without a follow up. (They both shot well in my rifle)

I have used the stinger by CCI but my rifle didnt like them as much and they tended to stovepipe in my brothers 1022.

The latest and greatest is the Velociter By CCI a 40 grain HP bullet that has more energy and velocity at 100yds then regular subsonic ammo does at the muzzle and about the same as standard High velocity .22 at 50yds

Hyper velocity .22 ammo has been around for decades its just that most folks still think of the rimfires have only a few different types of ammo and uses .

I hope that was in the US! ;) Or that the statute of limitations has passed (if there is one). :)

I can safely say that a .270 is just a little too much for doggies.

My old 22 just loves CCI Stingers. I have used that combo on a number of coyotes, using lung shots, at ranges up to 100 yards.

The last one was a loping 'yote at 100 yds, slightly quartering away. Shot at the center of the shoulder (well, I have to aim 12" high at 100)...it completely penetrated and exited the far side. The 'yote ran 20yds and collapsed in a heap.

So they work half decent at shortish ranges if you put the bullet in the right place, but I prefer my 220 Swift, or a 243/25-06/6.5 etc.

Thanks for the info guys.I will be calling and using a decoy so a close shot should be the case.I have a 12 gauge but would not want to mess up a Bobcats hide. What i am really after is a Fox or Raccoon as i need it for training my dog.Just trying to figure out the what ifs during a calling session. Thanks

I used a 222 in Creston for 2 winters I was there and was amazed at the results except for the "one close" shot I had and hit a shoulder. BIG exit hole.

It will work if you keep it to head shots, use CCI ammo.

Remington Yellow Jackets! Tough to get in large quantity but exellent.
I've been useing Winchester copper jacketed hollow points for the last couple years now and they work really well and feed in my 10\22.
Note these are not the cheep bulk winchester rounds!

Someone said something about grouse getting away with a .22? 2 words for that: HEAD SHOT
Put a piece of lead in a chickens melon and he aint go'n anywhere. Body shoot'n just cheet'n,
