Most people usually sight their pins in at 10 yard increments for example 10,20,30 and 40 yards.

On my Hoyt, I had 20, 30, 40 and 45 yard pins....

Negligible POI from 10 to 20 yards so just used the 20....Big difference between 40 and 45

The 45 was fun for outside targets....I am by any means advocating a 45 yard shot on an animal...

It takes:
Experiece
Practice
Confidence
A relaxed game animal to take a 45 yard shot..

I have one pin zeroed in at 10 yrds and good to 125 yrds ;)

When I used a multiple pin sight I had 20 30 40 50 60 70 80
when I was first starting archery and bow hunting and had a 3 pin sight it was 20 25 30 and is the setting I would reccomend most for brand newbies that are not shooting super fast

Start your first pin at...say 10 yards. Get it so that you're hitting the dime-sized "X". Then step back to 15 yards and shoot at the same "X" - or point of impact - and see if you're shooting low enough to have to set a different pin for that distance. The speed of your bow will determine your pin-gap.

If you're using a 3-pin sight, you may want to start at 15 yards instead of 10. It's amazing how many shots are less than 20 yards!

If it's a 3-pin sight, I'd suggest yardages of 15, 25, 35. If it's a 5-pin sight, I'd go with 10, 20, 30, 40, 50...as it's easy to "bracket" (sight between the pins) for yardages that don't seem to fit.....like maybe 25, or 35, or even 27 yards.

Confused yet?:confused: Don't hesitate to ask (demand) clarification.

yea with that set up you'll be fine with 20 25 30 or 20 30 40

either way I suspect you would have suffiecient gap in your pins

my 2 cents,

If your new to archery, set a pin for 10 yards and shoot a bit until you are hitting the target consistently.

Go to 20 yards and shoot with your 10 yard pin. This will tell you if you can do away with the 10 yard pin. If you are only a inch or so low, you don't need a 10 or 15 yard pin. If you are shooting a very slow bow, you may find you are a several inches low and you want to keep a 10 yard pin. I wouldn't go any further than 20 until you can consistently hit the mark. When your there, throw a 30 yard pin and like above, don't go further until you are comfortable at 30.

all just suggestions but don't worry about shooting long until you can hit short!

x2 - 20-30-40.As a rule try to get a shot at mid range-30 yd. and practice at that.If the animal comes tighter or farther you'll know what to set the other pins on the animal.Part of taking on bowhunting is to force yourself into some self control. Many a critter was able to walk off because the shooter made a good call by not taking the shot, others walked away with an arrow in the ass!!Practice-practice-practice,it is a great change up from the rifle once and a while.Good luck!

Ron C is giving some good advice and I would follow it as in the long run it will make you a better shot. Do you have any one teaching you how to shoot?

I would try and find some one to teach you as there is a lot to do with form and some one who knows how to shoot will be able to correct you with things you would not notice on your own.

Use it. It'll tell you if you are holding the bow in the correct vertical position - or not. Keep the bubble in the middle as you shoot. That way you avoid 'canting' the bow and compromising your accuracy.

go to the nearest archery shop and ask if there is lessons, most archery shops have lessons or gun clubs will have archery nights that people can help you with all the questions that you may have.
