As the closest Canadian chapter of NAVHDA (North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association) is in Edmonton, I thought I would post a message here to see if there are any versatile hunting dog owners around who are interested in starting a local chapter in BC.

If you have any interest in joining a local NAVHDA chapter, send me a message and I'll contact NAVHDA and see what is required. I have spoken with them in the past and they suggested starting a chapter in BC.

If nothing else, we can meet some other dog owners locally and maybe help each other with training.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Houndhunter,

NAVHDA deals with Versatile Hunting dogs. Mostly, German Shorthair Pointers, Wirehaired Pointers, Vislas, etc.

Big Boar, I tried again a couple years ago. I figure we need 12 to 15 serious members to start a BC chapter - we came up just a bit short but way better than the first time in '05.
Didn't think it would be a good idea to start one and have it fizzle, so I let it go. There seem to be a few more guys with versatiles now, so it may be worth trying again.

Look forward to seeing your pup someday.

If you are just interested in training your dog I would just have a bunch of guys get together and train and test your dog with Navhda.
If you have a versatile breed with an FCI stamp on the Pedigree you can become a member with DD-WV Canada (Deutsch Drahthaar World Association Canada) and we help you train your dog and you can run your dog in the Breed and Performance tests of the German System JGHV.http://www.vdd-canada.ca/public/

As perhaps an aside from NAVHDA and starting a chapter here, another option is to get involved with the existing pointing dog clubs.

The BC All Breed Pointer Club is a good place to start:http://http://bcabpc.ca/

If you are on Vancouver Island the Vancouver Island Pointing Dog Club is an option: http://www.vancouverislandpointingdogclub.ca/

The above two hold training days, hold tests (where you work on getting titles) and trials (where you compete). Both have Facebook groups where you can post questions and ask for assistance and usually find willing people to help. They welcome new interested folks.

Vizsla Canada is also a good resource: http://vizslacanada.ca/ They put on at least one event a year.

All of the above are super useful when embarking on training your dog, whether for tests and trials or for hunting. You will find a variety of pointing breeds and various types of people all with a focus around their dogs. The field events are a must to attend and get a sense of what is possible. They are great fun!

There are few things in life more enjoyable than working with your driven responsive connected working dog. It is amazing to run a set of fields with your dog and just watch them work.

I am a member of the prarie Vista NAVHDA chapter in Calgary as there is still no BC chapter. I've run my now 2yr old PP in both NA and UPT there. I think I am going to check out the all breeds pointer club in the spring but am often looking for training partners outside of organized events. Where abouts are you located. I am in Abbotsford.

I'm a Surrey griff owner and would be happy to meet up with you for some training. I have one bird launcher, a lucky launcher II, and frozen birds,,,,,even saved some deer blood and a chunk of hide for tracking.

There are lots of us with dogs on here. ‘Squatch (OP) and I hunted our dogs together in the Kootenays this past week. Tons of birds and tons of fun!
