Went guiding on the Dempster highway for caribou again this year. The porcupine herd was a little bit early and started crossing the area around the 23rd of october. I guided 4 hunters to 4 nice caribou and also had the time in between hunts to get a decent bull myself. Saw about 20,000 caribou in about a week. My first hunter was an 89 year old from Saskatchewan. http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/qq293/mountaindog68/ChesterMjoslness08.jpg
Tough old bugger......and he has a museum in Saskatchewan with animals from around the world. The next mornig his son-in-law and I walked across the highway from camp and got him a nice 400+ B.C. bull

This left me with a day to hunt and after looking at about 500 to a 1000 different bulls I finally decided on this one, even though I knew it wouldn't make book I liked the tops and was running out of time

I also managed to get my video camera set up and get it all on video. First time I ever got one of my animals on video.
Next day and another hunter. It was a 18 hour drive for him to get to the Dempster and took all of about 3 hours to finish his hunt with a nice @400 B.&C. bull

After a few day's back in town I went up for 1 more hunt to guide. The caribou were thining out now and we only saw about 2000 in 2 days. 1st day we had to turn down a nice bull (@ 410ish B.&C.) because he was across a river that was about 2 feet deep with ice on both sides. The next day we came across a herd with about 20 bulls in it. None would make book but 4 or 5 of them were real nice. I asked which 1 he liked the best and he picked this 1. He liked it because of the big shovels and bez but it is a little weak in the tops and main beam, still a hell of a caribou though.

From the look in the one picture they just settle down to eating while you harvest and field dress the animal. Are they spooky or challenging to hunt?

If you don't approach like a predator it is pretty easy to get into rifle range. They are a very curious animal and usually feel comfortable if they have 100 or so yards between them and you. What can make the hunt tough is the -20 to -40 temperatures and high winds

I used to camp up that road, I think. Is that the Tombstone Mountains? Any info on a guided trip like that? Thanks for the pics, Rob

I was working for Pete Jensen Outfitters, they are just south of Blackstone Outfitters on the Dempster Hwy. The hunt cost is @ $4400 plus you have travel and accomadation fee's, license & harvest fee's to the govt., taxidermy fee's etc. by the time you get home and put one on the wall it'll be @$7000 +
Both of the outfitters have base camps along the hwy. During the Porcupine migration near the end oct. (usually), they have an agreement to hunt on each others areas depending on where the caribou might be crossing the road. Somewhere over 100,000 animals in the herd but you never know where there gonna cross.
For more info check out the Yukon Outfitters Association or google search Porcupine Caribou.
