So, finally returned to BC with my 1st Whitetail that I shot while hunting in Northern Sask with my mother-in-law.

We were out on a -15 degree morning at dark. We scared a bunch of Does out of the field on our tromp in to our spot and figured we probably wouldn't see much after that.

But as the morning got brighter, so did our luck. About an hour after sunrise, she thinks she sees something on the horizon-so i take a look with the binos-nothing. We're looking in 2 separate fields from a windbreak, and on one side there is what only can be described as swells and valleys(kinda like the ocean) of large stubble of mowed wheat.

She says about 2-3 times that she thinks she sees something on the horizon, so i come over from my side with the binos and have a look and Nothing each time.

On the 4th time, i walk to her side without my rifle to have a look-this time i see it without the binos-150yards out-i don't even need the binos but i put them up anyway-SHOOTER:shock:.

They say you know a shooter without even having to think about it, and that's the truth.

I run back to pick up my rifle, come back and plant myself-open up the scope and he disappears into a valley-Doh. As luck would have it-he appears on the horizon, no shot- as there's way too much sky behind him.

He lingers around, and finally comes down the front side of a swell and puts some dirt behind him. He stops and my bullet goes, but not with the resounding Boom that i'm accustomed to hearing. It was more like a Pop!

My 30-06 usually makes a fairly large noise, so i thought it was a misfire, because without missing a beat-he bolts. He goes about ten yards while i chamber another round-Elaine whistles and he stops and looks over- it would be his last stop. Down he goes. i guess the cold changes the sound?

We look at each other in shock-high 5's:tongue: Turns out the bullet went straight through his boiler room and out the other side-good thing i didn't take that shot when he was on the horizon.

Taxidermist grossed him at 173 7/8 ths, 7points on each side- No mount for the head, but decided to make a rug out of him.

It's my first Whitetail, and only my second deer. I think it might become a bi-annual event! Hunting with the mother-in-law, who would'a thought?

Oh yeah, then we hunted 2 hours for the truck keys that she lost in the snow after that- luckily i found them or it woulda been a very long walk back to ?

Hope these pics work..

Who knows for certain why the deer, and probably most everything else is bigger and better in Saskatchewan?

I've often pondered this question in my mind, and although I've solved a lot of problems in time, this one continues to elude me.

There's NOTHING there except flat ground and sky and the water there is even bad. When I asked a native person the meaning of the word "Saskatchewan", he told me that it was an Indian word that means "Let's you and me get out of this place".

Somehow I think he was probably pulling my leg, but in the end, I went away even more confused.

Oh, and by the way.....Well done on a very nice buck!

great buck congrats. how far do you think you were shooting??

How rude of me-didn't even see this question-apologies, it was roughly about 150 yards, maybe a little less. Close enough to the old heart pumpin though.

its not that the deer there are so much bigger.. its just sooo much easier to get big ones there... because everyone on this site knows there are big deer here.. you just have to work for them.. my buck is a great example.. but when he came in he was only 50 yards away and i couldnt even see him.. i shot him from 30 yards opposed to 150.. and in sask 150 yards is a close shot!!

Your right, finding a 300 lb whitetail in Langely would be pretty hard:razz:

Great buck. I've never seen a deer rug. Will it look like a bear rug with the head and horns attached?

Nice whitetail. Best eats ever i'm sure.

I thought that you had to wear all white with an blaze hat or all orange out in SK. Was I misinformed or were you unaware of the regs?

I just remember stopping in Edmonton or Lloyd on the way thru picking up white camo and being told by the rest of our group that it had to be solid white.

So... I wore it inside out for a week!

I actually looked it up to get the answer. Turns out I was half right.

Beautiful buck and by the way check the regs next time as your upper half must be solid colors of either orange, scarlet, white or yellow. Just dont want to see you get pinched by a co.

nice buck, where abouts in saskabush were you hunting? I had the opportunity to go to peirceland this season and bag a nice 4x4 wt, an experience of a lifetime i love it out there.

Hmmm, you know, I saw the 'Blaze orange, white or any combinations of these colors' and figured i was alright...now in hindsight, I think i may have been mistaken. I guess a vest doesn't constitute a 'suit'. !? I guess the only way to confirm is to call the CO's office-next time.

as for the rug, or tanned hide as they say- I'm not sure of what to expect...it'll be without the head that's for sure!

Buknasty76:Got him north of Nipawin. It's a fair drive from where i was staying in PA, but it turned out I couldn't hunt near there until Nov 24th!
