Decisions decisions. I have a bit of a dilemma. My daughter in Alberta & I, both got a Mule Deer draw for Alberta this year. On my last draw hunt there a few years ago, I used a 30-06 Husqvarna Feather weight that I inherited from my father. My dilemma is deciding to use it again or to opt to use my Schultz & Larsen, 308 Norma Magnum. Sooooo, what would your choice be and why?

my BSA270 would be my choice - hehehehe

sorry Hummer couldnt resist

I think using the rifle you inherited from your dad and being on the hunt with your daughter makes the family trip feel like you have your daddy with ya too :)

30-06 is my rifle of choice Humm humm hummer bro :)

This one was my Dad's pride & joy. The wood on it is EXCEPTIONAL! I used it with my handloads on the Mulie I got on my last draw hunt in AB. However, the 308NM is begging for use on something other than Moose.

I'll have to get a 270 one day. It's a calibre I haven't had. Like I said it had a special significance on my previous trip to AB. Sort of like 'All In The Family'. Down the road, the plan is to hand it down to my Granddaughter, if she's right handed.

I'm not a big enough gun nut to help with your dilema but I'm x2 on this one... What a great answer newhunterette!

308 Norma Magnum ?? are you OUT of your mind? not only is that a very "old' version of a .30 Caliber magnum! with so many modern "magnums" at your disposal, I would hardly chance being GORED, maybe even GORED TWICE! by some Angry buck that you could of killed cleanly with a more modern and ADEQUATE Caliber ! its not worth the risk! at least if your gonna take a 308 Norma magnum, then take "2" ! I will loan you mine for a back-up! lmao

"old' version of a 30 caliber magnum. True. The 300 H&H lead the way but probably the "forerunner" of the 300WM was the 308NM. Old, yes but also tried, tested, true and deadly. PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you a scan of a target with load info. But, OK, send me your 308NM and I'll use it as backup.;-)

Yeh during the early 1960's the 308 Norma mag was the only alternate 30 caliber Magnun to the 300 H&H Magnun, soon Winchester Arms brought out the 300 Win Mag, affectionatly nic-named the (300 wind bag) by gunsmiths and the 308 Norma lost sales, not to a noticable difference in ballistics, but simply because 300 Win Mag ammo was much cheaper, more available! the 308 Norma still one of the most (efficient) 30 caliber magnums, so is the
300 H&H Magnum ( 300 hurt and holler), and Norma still is one of the leaders in ammo production, Weatherby ammo (brass) still produced by Norma! go figure huh??? on the other hand your 30-06 will do just fine! personally I would go for the 'nostalga" gun just to keep your Mo-Jo alive! dont triffle with tradition! Huskee for deer! OH yeh!

I still say take the Odd six.
My dad gave me his old JC higgins model 50 about 10 years ago and I still use this rifle to this day....although I'll be retiring it next year for a 7mm or 300.
Taking my Dads '06 may well be what will happen. That's what I used on the last AB. draw hunt. Just checked the ammo 'cabinet' and I have three boxes of reloads, ready to go, same loads as used on the previous hunt.
- Norma brass
- Norma 180gr SPSPBT's (the last of my supply!)
- IMR 4350
- CCI 200 primers
This is one I can't 'retire'. IF I had to pick one caliber of rifle for big game hunting, it would be hard to beat the '06. However, for this hunt, I'm still undecided.

What zone are you drawn in for mulie? Down in SE AB my buddy and his crew just downed a beaut 8 by 9 that grossed 224 and change and nets right around that 218 mark. Just a hog. He texted me some pics of it yesterday. Absolute gagger!

How about you take them both......one for each shoulder:)

There's a solution:idea:, with a small change!! Don't know about pack'em both but I can make the choice there. '06 on even days and the 308NM on odd days!!

Stick with the inherited Husky .06 while your hunting with your daughter. Almost like having 3 generations hunting even without your father being there. then maybe that rifle can be past down again .. post pics of these 2 fine rifles .. duke

Hey Duke. Going the 'generation' thing to the next step, when I hand it down to my Granddaughter in about 10 years, that'd be generation #4.

I've just taken a couple of pictures of each, but I find myself in need of a small favour:redface::redface:. With my computer skills, or lack thereof, being what they are, if I could e-mail them to you or another 'volunteer', could you post them for me???

Took them both out to the range this afternoon and it's seriously looking as though the 308NM is going to get the call for duty. God it shoots sweet!!

something very wrong - I posted something and now it is gone - is someone deleteing me

Hummer - why not take both and then see what the situation arises for the hunt - maybe you will then feel which one to use

I look at my collecton and it says today you take the 270 - all the time - hehehehe probably because my only rifle is my BSA270

Had thoughts along that line, as/post # 16. For hunting trips, I usually take a spare, just in case someone has a 'problem'. The 308NM will be the primary & the '06 will serve as backup. Decision made.

You're forgetting the .300 Weatherby, which predates both the .308 Norma and .300 Win Mag. It beats both of them in every way except for cost of ammo, thanks to the Weatherby name surcharge  as well.

Well, I went with the Schultz & Larsen 308NM using 200gr Sierra handloads and wasn't disappointed. Got a 5 point Mulie on my draw in Alberta and it was the first Deer in many years that I've shot on the run. Gun and load worked well.
My daughter, using her new 300WSM got a nice 4 point on her draw. In addition, my daughter and son in law also scored on four Mulie Does. All in all, a great hunt.
