I would much prefer to wait for a taxidermy photo. Much cleaner and tastefull without all the blood and such.

Unlike others on this forum I am more than willing to wait twelve to fourteen months for a "quality photo". More than enough blood has already been posted with the scope bite and carcass shot.

Congrats to hunter1947. Very clean and well utilized carcass by the way. The ravens won't be liking you very much.

The story begins with me and blacktailstalker headed off to the EK at 3am on Tue sept the 16 to catch the first sailing out from Duke point nanimo ferry.

We got to our hunting camp that same day and had all set up buy 7pm.
We where off hunting the next morning not to find any elk the hole day.

I had to go to cranbrook and see my new granddaughter the next day so BTS was hunting by himself for the next two days.
When I got back into camp Andy told me that he was into a big elk herd.

BTS and me hit the heard hard the next day and we spotted a huge bull that was out about 500 yards ,we couldn't make out the points on him because he was looking right at us ,but he was big and had white ivory tips so we called this bull ivory.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Picture_1159.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10698&limit=recent)

We worked this herd for the next 4 days and had him calling out to us but would not show himself http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon9.gif.
One morning I worked this bull lower down well BTS worked him at the higher elevation.
BTS had this bull worked up and coming in when all of a sudden he heard a shot ,he figured it was me because I was below him where the shot had come from he was scrambling to get back to his truck and ask me if I had shot this bull ,I said no it was not me but I heard the shot ,he was not very happy nor me.
We tried finding a truck around the area latter but could not find one anywhere ???.
We worked the area two more days and never heard from this bull again.

4 days latter we found out that that bull was shot the same day we heard the shot ,the local hunter told us that it scored 346 green Ba ,Ba.
We found a nother herd a few days latter and worked them and did identify that one was a 6x6 but it was out 1000 yards ,we never got him in close enough to hammer him.

BTS and me found a nother herd and worked then we saw 5x5 but no others that made a 6.

Andy had to go to Alberta to pick up his hounds so i was off hunting by myself and I found a nother herd and I'm sure the one in that herd was a 6x5 bull.
I seen the dagger with two smaller points behind it that where 3 inches long as for the fourth one down ,but could not make out the two eye guardshttp://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon9.gif.

The next day I got in there early at dark and set up with the spotting scope ,when daylight came I saw a few bulls on the side hill about 600 yard out ,I looked at both and the one was a 6x5 bull ,all 6 where on this same bull that i saw the day before.

I snuck in and after one hour getting to a range where i could take him he was not to be found.

Up to this time of the hunt I had seen 6 ,5x5 ,3 ,6 pointers and two spiker's as for about 50 cows and calf's.

Andy had to leave the next day ,we had a great hunt together for the two weeks ,next year is not that far away Andy ,we will nail them next year bud.

I then teamed up with my other two hunting partners that I have hunted with for over 20 years ,there names are Corporal Gringo and Bosch Magnum.

Bosch had shot a nice 4 point whitetail the day before he came into my camp ,he also had an opportunity on shooting a 6x6 but did not work out for him.

We hunted hard together and had called in about 7 bulls but where all under age with the points.

One morning I and him went into this honey hole of mine and he was on the lower mountain well I was up on the hi side.

I had waked in about 3kl when I spotted a bull I put my field glasses on him and saw 7 points on the one side ,when I had identified him he took off like a bullet ,he was out at about 250 yards ,I put the safety off and amid at this running bull ,1 ,2 ,3 shots no hit ,the only thing that got hit was my nose ,boy was I upset.

We looked for blood for about 3hr and never found any.

I went back there that evening and set up about 4hr before dark and never heard or seen a thing.

Me and Brian talked about a game plane on the last day of the hunt ,we both agreed to go in on the lower road as the elk are usual down lower so that was what we did.

When we got in there that early morning it was all fogged in so we where going to go to a lower elevation somewhere else.

Boy am I glad that we both said we will go there and see if the fog will lift latter and it did thank god.

As we got back in to the area about 3kl I put my binoculars up to find an elk body ,I could not see the head just the back part of the body.

So we snuck in to close the distance when we got into about 150 yard I said to Brian I see an elk ,we both put up the binos to see that it was a bull he was feeding with his head down ,then he lifted his head up I saw the big dagger a two good points behind it so I dropped my binos and put my Rifle up on him.
Brian was looking at him and said it is a 6 point when he lifted his head up ones more ,I was on 9 power with my scope and I to counted 6 as well.

I squeezed the trigger and he fell out of sight.
I said I ether missed him or he is down ,you see all I could see was half way up the neck to the head at 150 yards out.

When we got there we could not find him ,we looked for about 10 minits no blood I was getting real upset by this time.

I went back to where I shot from and looked over the path of the shot I took to find out that I was to low so then I went back and claimed up higher and there he was ,I could see the one antler sticking up ,boy was I pumped up at this time ,man O man I was on cloud 9.

My shot hit him in the neck about a foot below the head.

We cleaned him then walked back out 3kl got all our gear then walked back in cut him up and took the first load out then went back in and got the remainder of him.

After adding up the 3 walk ins it totaled up to 18kl of walking.

Nice Bull, I know how you feel after shooting something you know you damn right dropped it in its tracks but can't find it right away, that feeling sucks and brings doubt into your mind very quick, my wife and I spent 15 minutes trying to find her bull moose in the tall grass until we realized it was beside the "other" tree, classic lesson to get better landmarks before moving in.

Love the wall tent fumigating, happens to me all the time too:lol:

Nothing like elk hunting eh? Sounds like a lot of work packing him out, kinna tough on an old guy, but worth it all in the end.

Since I failed to come and help you pour concrete last summer, I guess I should have helped you guys pack out that bull.....? Sounds like elk hunters are having a pretty good year in the East Kootenay.

Wonder who the guy was who shot the 346 bull, did you get a name?

Wayne called this 2 pt in to 30 yards and I watched from above.
This bull bedded down half way, got up, danced around like a little kid, bit at himself, bucked and spun around twice, was pretty cool to watch him play.

Wolf kill, from that morning (maybe 4 hrs old) We knew of 5 different packs in a 50 km stretch. Whitetail numbers were down BIG TIME

THANKS from all you great members for the kind words from my hunt http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon12.gif.

You won't believe how hard I worked to get this bull ,I am still licking my wounds after being home for 3 days.
It was nice to get the monkey off my back finally.
I was thinking that maybe I was getting to old to connect on one more elk before my time was up.

Boy was I wrong .
All I wanted was one more bull for old times sakes and I was fortunate to connect on one.
I just want to thank the lord for giving one more elk before my time is up and I thank him dearly for giving.

All you members are great people and I am glad to be part HBC.

Mark and company have done a great job on keeping this site up and operating and I thank them from the bottom of my hart ,THANKS and keep up the good work Mark and company http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f314/BlacktailStalker/EastKootElkHunt08030.jpgFirst of all, it was great meeting you Andy, too bad you could'nt of stretched another week out of it as I'm pretty sure you would have had a great chance at another bull, Wayne and I pounded her pretty hard for that week and perserverance does pay off sometimes. Wayne was pretty well worn out when you handed the reins over to me but he managed to dig down and give her for another week. I love the picture of the rainbow, we named that clearing across the way, moosehead slash because it looks like a immature bullhead, also the one beside it looks just like a grizzly bear, have a look next time. By the way good luck with your island elk hunt and would love to hook up with you on a cougar hunt someday.

You have to find time to hunt.

You don't live a long time and you have to make time to hunt its got to be that way in my books anyway.

Plan now sawmill for next sept elk you got to make time.

Words of wisdom '47. When I was at the resort and commented that I hadn't seen a regular customer in a couple years, their reply was always the same, "I'm so busy I just don't have the time."
My response was always the same as well, "you have to make the time."

The grim reality is there will come a time in our lives where it is impossible or we are physically limited on where and how we hunt and fish. Before we know it time passes us by and all we have to show for it is a gold watch and a kick in the butt to make room for the new generation.

An "aluminum can philosopher" once told me, "Life has no rearview mirrors and you only get one shot. You can't go back and reclaim lost time"

So make the time before you're out of time!

That bull rocks !!! Are you planning on a mount??

No mount ,I have got 3 other 6x6 that are around the same size or bigger.

I have one 7x7 RME and one 9x8 Roosevelt elk that have a head mount ,thats all I need for now ,I am still waiting for a RME bull that is worth getting a second mount done ,maybe this year ,O yes I can say this year ,not far away till bear season ,3 months to go .
