We just got back from our big ten day moose hunt up on the Connector. Weather was interesting to say the least. First day we got there, I arrived wearing shorts and a tank top with highs of 25-28 degrees the next day. After that though, the weather turned to the typical mountain weather that is known for that area.

We decided that since moose did not open up until Saturday, we would head out to one of our popular walk-in lakes on the Friday before. I always pack my rifle as you never know when you can run into a nice 4 pt muley, whitey or even a black bear.

Bruce got a very nice 24 inch fish that looked like it had recently finished spawning. It was rather skinny and weighed 3.8lbs. Probably be closer to 5-6 lbs once it fattens up.

This was a typical Zippermouth Lake rainbow, 18-19 inches of energized chrome.

The boys resting after a hard days work.

Moose season arrived and we headed out with high hopes in four different areas. We met up routinely every morning at a rendezvous point to discuss the morning's events and plan for the afternoon session. The stats were amazingly similar every day, massive amounts of muleys and few sightings of moose. The moose we did see were the usual cows or the odd big bull. Last year almost all of the cows we saw had calves and this year alot of them were by themselves. I never did see a 4 pt muley in my travels and the other guys may have seen one but it was moving before they good identify it clearly. One day, I saw 10 muley bucks with 6 in one pod.

We started our Monday morning hunt in the dark and the rain. It was tough to get up that morning knowing that that is what we were going to be facing that day. After a few hours of the rain that morning (thank god for my new hunting clothes that are mostly water proof, money well spent), it turned to snow. This went on for the remainder of the morning.

Another thing that was interesting was we were seeing more and more white tails. We knew they were there but not in any sort of numbers. On the second or third day, I ran into this 4 pt guy on my way back to camp for breakfast. This is the biggest whitey rack I have so far to date as I hunt in alot of areas where there are very little or no white tails present, so needless to say I was rather pleased and had my customary drink of Crown after a successful day.

On the same morning as the whitey kill, two of our group got into some moose. I believe there was a big bull and a cow/calf in one block and they were calling and talking quite a bit back and forth. One of the other guys (Bob) ran into a black bear or should I say, the bear ran into him. As Bob was sitting in that block, Gary was walking the lower road of it trying to see if they were any other moose hanging around. He must have spooked the bear because all of a sudden Bob is looking out and then hears twigs breaking and noises coming up below him. The bear appears in a full run directly at him. Bob flicks the safety off and raises his rifle to take aim. At about 35 yards he pulls the trigger and the bear drops after a short run. I don't think the bear even saw him. Not a bad start to the trip. One deer and one bear.

Sorry about the foggy pic, just a little bit of water that day.

A couple of days go by and one of our guys Gary has to go back to babysitting duties and work. On his last morning up there with us, he runs into another whitey but this time it has spikes and he puts a well placed shot into it. Now we have two deer and a bear.

Another couple of days go by and I end up going to a place I call my "Field of Dreams" for the evening hunt. As you can imagine by the name, I have seen alot of game in this area and was hoping to run into a 2 yr old bullwinkle. I parked my quad at the end of the block and stopped for a beverage and a snack. After this, I walked back to the quad and got on and fired it up. I headed about 30 yards back down the road, when I saw movement out of the corner of my eye at the tree line above me. Immediately, I stop the quad and grab my binoculars to check this out. 211 yards, up hill at the tree line, there is a nice coloured cinnamon bear grazing in the open. I grab my new 300 Win short mag and aim for the front shoulder and pull. The bear stumbles back 2 steps and lurches forward another 2 steps and drops in it's tracks. I can smell the smokies already.

Here are the numbers for our guys.

Myself: 149 mule deer does, 8 muley spikers, 23-2pt muleys, 4-3pt muleys, 3 cow moose, 3 calf moose, 1 bull moose, 3 whitetail does, 1-4pt whitetail, 3 coyotes and 1 black bear.

Bob: 147 mule deer does, 8 muley spikers, 11-2pt muleys, 2-3pt muleys, 13 cow moose, 3 calf moose, 3 bull moose, 13 whitetail does, and 8 black bears.

Garry: 66 mule deer does, 2 muley spikers, 6-2pt muleys, 1-3pt muley, 1 cow moose, 1 calf moose, 2 whitetail does and 1 black bear.

Gary: 81 mule deer does, 9 muley spikers, 1-2pt muley, 1-3pt muley, 10 cow moose, 1 calf moose, 1 bull moose, 8 whitetail does, 1-2pt whitetail, 1 cougar and 5 black bears.

All in all, it was an awesome trip and many memories were created that I will never forget. These are the things that I truly live for. Good friends and good times.

P.S. Be careful when you are out in the bush as they have discovered a new species that has characteristics of both deer and bear. Scientists have not yet decided what to call this new found critter, but I think that I will name it the "White Tail Bear"

Just weekenders now Mike. Heading to Terrace on Friday for 8-9 days of fishing up there and then back into the hunting mode.

Thanks for all the compliments guys. This site rocks.
