Well how did everyone make out on the geese? We did okay yesterday but they decoyed way better today. K

Tom, 'Ol Dan, and I went out yesterday to the marsh. It was very slow, not many ducks to look at either (but mostly woodies out there now).
We had a pair of geese go by just out of range and saw a small flight land in the island area Dave C. hunts. We decided to check out our duck blind which is a few hundred yards from where we pass shoot the geese.
While there, Tom and I heard some honking and saw 4 birds headed towards 'Ol Dan. We decided to get our guns in case any flaring birds came by. As we loaded Tom said they were headed our way and I just got my gun loaded when they were on top of us. A good shot and I should think we should have gotten all 4..... But we took the same bird with our first shots and I got one with my third (shot 2 at the first as I wanted to make sure it fell close).
So it was just 2 birds, one other came at us but the boat was uncovered as we checked out the blind and it veered off just out of range. We didn't go today.
There is a lot of mosquitos out there! Bring your bug spray! Also, the cover is very thick, you won't find any birds that don't land in the water without a dog. Never seen it this thick. Looks like we'll have a lot of water out there again this season too.
Here's my pics, where are yours!:D

Saw only one group this morning, flock of 12 decoyed we shot 3 out of it, only 4 shots went off though becuase of a gun jam, then we plea called them back for another round and shot another 5 out of it then. Only 4 flew away.

My cameras lens was actually acting up becuase there was a lot of fog this morning, so when I went to take some photos they all blurred but this one of Matt with his 3 birds turned out. He's kindof wet after one fell into a slough.

Well Saturday was pretty much a bust for us. We got out late after celebrating a little too hard after killing a bear the night before. We had one flock come in and due to a gun jam and rusty shooting we never touched a feather. This morning in a different field we had two bunches come in and got three birds.

Unfortunately the majority of these places are on private property and it's hunt by permission or invite only if you don't have farmland. The best thing to do is go around and ask for permission. The worst they can say is no.

Retiever duty is part of a young hunter's apprenticeship when there's no dog around and a bird goes down in the slough.

Well Matts dog, Hank, got his year rabies shot saturday afternoon and he had a reaction so he had to get another shot that night, so it was best for him to stay home sunday.

And since there was no dog, after shooting at the flock when they decoyed and they came back over head of us, a couple dropped behind us in a small slough. No dog equals a human retriever. :p

Matt was only gonna go up to his boots until he took a step and dropped down past his waist. Lets just say his cell phone doesnt work anymore

Owell it was still a great morning.

I believe the correct term is "birddog". Until one works up to the "decoyhauler" position.

Yes it is the first hunt with the decoys and I am very happy. I set them up in a V, and the geese came right down the middle to the blind. Every flock either landed or flared at 10 yards.

I got here Thursday and Friday for a hoot with a buddy in Northern Alberta.
Thursday 9 honkers down, only one duck into the deks cmae in early and quiet.
Friday 6 Honkers and 4 Ducks, called in a flock of about 300 ducks, what a blast.
Only pics are on my buddies cell which kinda sucks.
Only local birds right now but the northerns should be here very soon.

Made it out again this morning. It was foggy but we could hear a number of geese sitting in the closed area near the lake. Most flew out and down the river but one small flight of about 7 came by us and 'ol Dan and I dropped one each and sailed another off into the fog (looked for it but have no idea how far it traveled).
Time to get the blinds in shape, then I'm off to alberta with my dad for a ggose hunt the week before our opener. Should be back in time....thurs or friday before!
Hope you all saw a few birds this past week, looks like all the usual posters here connected on birds!
