In the fall turkeys are hunted differently from the spring. In the spring you can use many different calls and decoys to appeal to a toms breeding urge.

In the fall calls don’t work as well unless you know exactly what calls to use and under what conditions. A very successful tactic is to find a flock of turkeys and then scatter them, this is achieved by sneaking as close as possible and then run toward the flock. The idea is to break the flock up and hopefully achieve that the birds fly in different directions. With a little practice and knowledge it is actually not that difficult to do.

Then the hunter has to watch where the bulk of the birds fly. He follows the birds taking care to stay undetected. As soon the turkeys land they will call the other birds to them. The sound they make is called the Ki-ki-yelp or Ki-ki-Run. These calls sound a bit like a fast but soft yelp. The hunter mimics these yelps tone for tone with a box or slate type call, if done right the chances are good that the birds will come toward the hunter in the hope to unite with other turkeys.

I have written quite a few articles on fall hunting tactics that you can find on my turkey hunting blog:
