Our new contest!!

Instead of just a deer contest, this year HBC is putting on a BIG GAME contest!!

Here are the rules:

All entries must be BC wildlife.
All entries MUST be accompanied by a photo, posted on the Contest thread.
All entrants *MUST* be members of HBC no later than Sept 10/2008. PLEASE GET YOUR WIFE/HUSBAND/SON/DAUGHTER SIGNED UP NOW. You CANNOT enter their animals for them!
All entrants *MUST* be accompanied by a short story of the hunt. (No, we don't need GPS co-ordinates, just let us know what sort of terrain you were hunting, and how you hunted it, etc- This adds to the fun, and makes the contest more interesting)
All entries must be harvested in a legal manner, as prescribed by BC Wildlife/Hunting Regulations

Categories:

#1 Big Game Animal category. 2 winners. The “entry fee” is an animal. You may enter as many times as you like. One animal= one ballot.

Thanks, very generous!

#4 BIG GAME

Biggest animal, scored by a COMPETENT scorer. IF you want to enter this contest, we need to see proof of score. To enter, post your animal in the regular contest and include a score. A COMPETENT scorer will be defined as a person that "knows enough and has scored enough" They can be official scorers, credible taxidermists, or credible members of HBC. A number of HBC members qualify, so if you are in their area, hopefully they can help you out. In the interest of expediency, GREEN scores are fine. if there is a dispute, the entrants need to go to an official scorer, or a scorer that is agreed by me.

The winner will be based in percentage of the BC record book. So if you get a moose that is 65% of the book a blacktail with 70% of the BC book will beat you, regardless if your moose has a larger score.

1 winner, largest animal by %

Prize:

TBA

COntest ends Dec 31/2008

Since this is a CONTEST thread, please keep comments/congrats to a minimum; : "Wow, Gatehouse, nice 2 point" is an example of an acceptable post..Eventually, such posts will get deleted in the interest of expediency. If you wish to discuss the animals, start other threads. No offence is meant, just it's hard to plow through pages of "nice buck" comments when I try to find entrants etc.

Questions will be answered on this thread.

******Please Note******

I haven't had final notice of any prizes as of yet. When I do I can restructure the contests slightly, to reflect what we have to work with. If I get more prizes donated, I can add more winners.

Good luck to all!!

Questions:

To be scored after 60 day drying period or just green scored?

In the interest of expediency, GREEN scores are fine.

B&C for rifles and P&Y for bows for percentage of score?

The winner will be based in percentage of the BC record book

That is for the "big animal" contest. The other contests are random draws.

No LEH?? Did some one not get any draws?

We never allowed LEH entries in the annual deer contest, in an effort to keep the playing field level for all participants. However, some animals like grizzly and bison are only available via LEH, so we may have to change that rule to include those species. Gotta think about including/excluding LEH for a bit!:D

If my 12 year old takes a deer on my tag does he get entered in the youth category or does it stay on my tag in the big game category?

If it's a 12 year old, it goes in the youth category. :)

Gateholio

We did a quick consultation and decided to remove the No LEH rule. Since there are no limits to the amount of entries you can make-unlike the deer contest- we don't need the rule anymore.

This is likely a dumb question.

I am a member but how do I join my wife and son up on HBC from the same computer?

you need a different email address, like hotmail. Don't bother trying to use Gmail as I banned that email provider for to much spam.

Woke up at 4:30 am and started hiking. Saw 6 bears and 6 does and one little spike that I failed to get with my bow. Then came across this guy raking his velvet off on a fallen log. Dropped the bow and grabbed the rifle from dad! Put one in the spine, said my prayers, took some pics, and then the work began! He was green scored, and total gross was 165. with deductions he was 156 something

Well, had my 6x6 elk down by 730 this morning. Me and my brother have been working this area since last year when we had some good action, but missed oportunities. This year first time out (11th) we had 4 return bugels but no other action, today, up at 4am out to the bush 5, into our spot by 5:30, cow calls, nothing, bugel, nothing, we hung around about an hour with not a sound anywhere. We decided to head back up to the clear cut above a km away where we had seen some old rubs and had called one out last year. We get there, sit down, cow call wait 15min, nothing, bugel, 30sec later a bull chuckels about 200 yards out in the cut, he snuck right out without us seeing him, he continues to move towards us in a semi circle, never presenting a shot, we ID him as a shooter and have him pegged to come up about 75yards in front of us us he disappeared behind a swell, well all of a sudden he shows 75 yarsd to our left!!! catches a sniff, turns and starts trotting off, my brother hits the hoochie mumma and he stops about 100 yards out facing straight away with only the back of his head showing, i bring the cross hairs down slowly, as they reach mid head, squeeze, boom, down he goes for the count!! couldn't wait for a better shot as there was heavy willow/popular cover all the way to the bush line. The the work began!! but all worth it, now my brother is on his my over for some cold ones!!! oh what a day...

After 4 years my bro and I finally got our first alpine monster. The first evening we got busted on our stalk but we found him again the next morning up on a ridge. The second time around we didn't make any fatal mistakes and got within 200 yards of his bedding spot. After a few minutes he stepped out into the open and that was the end. It was a long heavy pack out but it was worth it.

Question: Are you basing the score on gross or net? Might save a hassle to declare it now.

My first entry in the bow hunting category, first of a few I hope. I hope not to take out the gun at all. This guy was double lunged out of a treestand about 25 yards. Didn't know what hit him. I saw him coming through a thicket from about 45 yards and he was very, very tentative. He stopped about every 2 steps to survey the area and direction he was going. I took every precaution for non- detection and it seemed to work. He stood behind a tree for what seemed like forever and then, finally stepped out onto a very active game trail. When I shot he bolted and headed back exactly where he had come from. Took awhile to find him, but with help we found him piled up in deep brush. The only thing that gave him away when we found him was his antlers other than that he was the same color as the surroundings. I knew I hit him hard but I was getting very concerned we might not find him given the thick brush. Put him into the wagon behind an ATV and escorted him to camp. Many thanks to my hunting pals and hunting buds Rockrabbit and Boydo50, without them this very memorable hunt of a lifetime wouldn't have happened.

On Sept 13 I shot this tender morcel. I was hunting region 5 under a full moon and not too many deer were out and about. I put on about 18 km on my feet that weekend and my voice was getting hoarse from screaming "COME HERE DEER" into the dense bush. At last this little guy jumped up from his bed and before he could bolt I plugged him good through the boiler room. He now resides where all tender vitles belong, in my freezer.

Got this guy wensday morning at 10:30 found a new honey hole 3 others came in after he was down.
well I was out hiking the logging roads in SS and decided to go up up up a steep hill, I have passed it up on several occasions due to it's steepness, as I was cresting the hill I could hear some bush bashing, I droped my back pack and fanny bag. Crept over the hill and there he was raking the bush. Raised the rifle and boom he was down. After the shot 3 more came in one that was 1/2 again his size. I will let it rest for a week or so and revisit to see what will be next. I draged him 2 km to the road and then hiked 4 km to the truck so I could collect my prize.

got this deranged lookin 4point up rabbit mountain behind tulameen at about 7am opening day.we had been up for a week as my younger brother was doin the youth hunt and we hadnt seen anything due mostly to the heat than last morning of youth season we come around the corner at the bottom of rabbit around 8am he gets his 2point so the pressure was on as surely i had to get something or he'd never shut up bout it. so i head out just before sun up opening day with blainer and we head up rabbit we figured thats the only place we've seen anything and we covered way to much land that week so we make our way up rabbit as the sun comes up over the mountains and we see some movent in the cut ahead so we glass it and its just a couple does so we continue on just around the corner and blainer says wait i think theres another so we creep up closer glass it and its a buck but is it legal so he glasses it more and says yea its a 4point take it so i sight it up and BANG! it takes off like a rocket although im sure i hit it even though it didnt look like it so we go up and theres blood so we go trackin and after some serious hikin we found this guy up top of some steep timber

QCI Sitka. Fourth entry under bowhunting, if the contest administrators allow it. It doesn't really exhibit the "big" in Big Game Contest.

I took my wife to the Charlottes, sight seeing, for four days last week. I took my bow and two tags. One for a good buck and one for a back-up in case I saw a cranker after cutting the first tag. My wife spotted a good buck Monday morning shortly after our arrival and on the way to Masset. I hummed and hawed, then passed. Even though we were not hunting, I was sure I would see something better on our travels. Wrong!!. That was the best buck we saw, by far.

With an hour of light left on the last night, I decided to go for a walk in the rain. I parked and walked up a logging road. I came around a corner and this deer was laying in some tall grass, with just it's head visible facing me. No P&Y buck here but I had two tags and 1/2 hour of light left. And I had to be back to take my wife out for supper in one hour.

I just slowly moved towards the deer untill I was twelve yards away. It still didn't get up. So I put the twenty yard pin four inches under it's chin and sent a Spitfire broadhead through it's neck, cutting the jugular and severing the spine. It just flopped back and never moved.

When I walked over I actually felt kinda bad about how small it was. Especially since we had seen quite a few mature deer. But it sure is handy when you can just pick'em up to shake the guts out!

Last December, four of us ate one about this size in four days of hunting. Can't be beat for taste and tender as far as deer go!!

Well,it was my turn to pull the trigger.I have spent the early part of the season taking younger hunters out,as posted in earlier thread titled, some success with younger fella's.I prefer to hunt the 4 point season,as there is less pressure and I'm looking for a mature buck. The past few days,I concentrated my efforts in the Tulameen area and yesterday was the most productive day.The game were moving and we seen better than 15 does and the largest 2 point I have ever seen,2' wide and 2' tall but not legal.I did manage to jump a 4x5 mulie with a doe and decided that I had better put him in the freezer. He has a kicker on one side which is hard to see in the picture which put's him at 5 points on that side.My partner layed down a coyote and a half dozen grouse.Good all around trip. The problem is that I have yet to figure out how to post a picture.I have put a picture in the gallery and will work on moving it over later, unless someone can help.

Okay-here's my 1st Mule Deer. Definitely more deer than mule, and won't be winning biggest animal-but an entry nonetheless!
Appeared out of nowhere in the last hour of daylight after an entire day of moving around and seeing Nada. Heard a couple take flight:mad: though.
Decided to have a seat for the last few hours of the day and low and behold-the forest ghost appears and runs right into my bullet. Not much fun dragging and gutting your 1st deer in the dark, but good experience. Hope this Pic works!

October 26/2008 decided to drop this little meat buck before we go back to 4pt mulie season. He was about 75yrds downhill when I first shot (and missed:eek:) I thought I had a solid lung shot but he was heading farther downhill so I took another quick shot and he dropped instantly. Good thing I followed up as when I got down to him I realized that my first shot missed completely:eek: My second shot went right below the ear (not intentionally either). Sometimes it doesn't go as planned but works out anyways :redface:

Here is my entry.

I was out hunting Oct 26. I got out of my truck to go to my cut block when my old neighbour comes around the corner on his quad. I tell him I'll be in this cut block. He said he would drive the road above me to push any deer down. He had a sprained ankle & I had knee surgery 2 weeks prior.

About 45 mins later I see a doe with 2 of this years fawns below me. Just then I hear his quad above and look thru my binos to see him waveing for me to come to him. I grab my gun & gear and whenI get to him he tells me about a 4x4 with 10 does. I said "lets get him". I hop on his quad and we slowly putt in to where the buck was. He was still there !!!
I look thru my binos to be sure he is a 4 point. A short 25 yard shot and I have my first 4 point mulie. He weighed in at 156lbs on the hook.

I have to say a big thanks to Jason. I owe you one buddy.

One ballot please.

Short story goes like this. The Wife(tm) shot at bear and missed due to extreme yardage and bullet drop (we figured out later). While chasing the bear, came upon 4 point mulie. I shot the mulie - bang - flop. Longer version of the story is here: http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=27470

drove into a new area in region 3 to check it out. drove into a big clear cut and all i could see was fog.i parked in the cut to wait out the fog, about half hour later,i see two ears on top of a little knoll about 100 yards away, hmmmmm,a doe.then i noticed a couple funny looking "twigs" beside her and notice it was a buck.he turned his head and i see 4 points.he looked pretty decent so i decided to take him.one shot and down he goes.once i got to him he definately had ground shrinkage, lol.

This is a little meat deer from reg 3 that I plugged the last week of any buck while looking for the elusive immature bullwinkle (Oct) We saw lots of cows and a couple of nice bulls as well as lots of small pockets of does . As others have said they seemed to be abit behind this year (rut) This little guy will be choice eating as there is no swelled neck and the scent glands were practically dry .

Here is number two.

Day 1

25tikka goes high up the hill and I stay low. A little while into the walk I notice some caribou up high, pretty much where 25tikka should be. Wow big bull and a few others. I watch them for about 5 minutes and look for 25tikka in the process. No 25tikka. Well I start planning my stalk as they are about 1km away. Look back towards caribou with binos and... what the heck... big caribou falls over.....then I hear the crack of 25tikka's .257 weatherby. Bull number one on the ground. I hike up and the then the work begins. We pack back as much as we can back to camp (about 4km) and bury the rest of the meat under a huge pile of rocks. We figure it should be safe until the next morning, as we had seen no bear sign. Well I guess we were wrong.

Day 2

I start out early to hunt and then 25tikka and Dave will come up behind a while later to get the rest of the meat. I get to the top of the hill....whoa.... big sow grizz with a cub. She already had the carcass buried. I guess we were wrong about the bears. In addition to the bears, there were wolves and fox running all over the place. I didn't hang around to long as she was starting to get a little closer to me. You see at this point I was only 150 yards away or so. I radio back to camp and let them know what has happened. I leave and check out the top of the hill. I come back awhile later and the bears have gone. Still not sure if they have gotten into the rock pile but I still do not want to get to close. I take off and start hunting again and leave the grizz and meat up to the boys back at camp. About an hour later I notice a group of caribou down in the valley about a 1km away. They disappear over a hill into a little ravine and don't come out the other side. I figure, right on, they bedded down. I jog towards them, drop my pack about 300 yards from where I figure they are and then stalk towards them. I get to a rock on top of the hill they crested and there they are, about 200 yrds away, bedded. There is one big bull, a little bull and two cows. I get the binos on him and start counting points, damn I can only see 4 on each side, its just the way his head is turned and he is not moving much as he is sleeping. Why did I leave the spotting scope in my pack?? I can see a little depression in the land that runs parallel with the hill so I crawl another 75 yards or so down the depression towards the bou. I then belly crawl to a little rock, the only cover I have between me and them. At the rock I am about 125 yards to the big bull. I put up the binos and start counting again....YES....he has five on the left side. Now to make the shot. Well since he is bedded facing me I have no shot. I figure I will just wait it out and they should get up shortly. Well finally after an hour and twenty minutes something alarmed them and up they got. I anchored him with one shot to the chest with my 270wsm. Bull number two on the ground. My first caribou so I was pretty excited, still am. No grizz on this one so that was a bonus. 25tikka and Dave managed to save another quarter off of his caribou so we lost some but I guess the grizzlys were quite appreciative.

Headed out today, started off slow seeing a couple of doe's. I was riding to my next area and spotted some deer on the move. I glass and saw a respectable buck. I let a shot fly and the deer disapeared. I started to walk into the slash and to see if I find the deer and a doe popped up and I then notice that I had missed the first time but was lucky enough to now get a second shot at my buck. I shot hit in the neck and he bolted, he nearly ran me over on the way by at only 20-30 feet. I could tell he was hit hard. I started walking in the direction that he had traveled and saw another respectable buck standing at the tree line waiting for me to shoot,,, lucky buck out of tags

I shot him earlier in october on our last day of a 10 day hunting trip.

I was at the tail end of a still/stand hunt through a large cut block when over my walkie-talkie my cousin informed me he had spooked a buck across the slash in my direction. I was up on a hill glassing all over and couldn't find him so I put the bino's down and he walked from behind the knoll in front of me 120 yards away one shot to the boiler room and he was down.

I missed four shots at a nice 4 point three days earlier at about 200-250 yards.Turns out my gun was shooting out 5" at 90 yards:mad:. It must have been knocked out on my stone sheep hunt in sept. Learned a good lesson on sighting in a gun before and after hunting trips!!

IMO as a new hunter, this was/is one of the best sources of info that I laid my hands on, when it came seeking knowledge on how to treat a critter after the trigger was pulled. It covers EVERYTHING from the moment you confirm it being dead,,,, to closing the lid on the freezer - They are priceless!

# 2 entry

The last trip was the end of November back to our Whitetail spot. The fisrt morning I was in my stand and after an hour saw a doe, 20 mins passed and I could hear a buck grunting. He was following the same path the doe took earlier but he never presented a shot. 20 mins later I hear a buck grunting again this time chasing a doe right at me. They were running flat out and he was grunting up a storm. I grunted in attempt to stop them but it only freaked out the doe who took off in the opposite direction. They came back 3 times running laps around the stand, on the third pass I lined the buck up and moved with him on the run at about 40 yards. When I was confident I had a good bead on him I pulled the trigger. I new I must have hit him by his reaction and the fact the doe ran away with no buck in pursuit. Sure enogh found him piled up 50 yards away double lunged. So I finally got one from my stand to end my season, my buddy shot one from my stand as well the next day.
It was an odd looking small rack with 5 little points on one side.

Here is my entry. Bow mule buck, 3x2 last day of season, region 8, After sitting in the tree stands for the morning my dad and I decide to check out the area to the south were we know there are lots a mulies, but mostly does. As usuall we lost count after about 26. We are headed back to camp when we spot another group of 6 deer, one being a 2 point. After I fail to stalk closer for a shot we decide to head back to where we just came from to see if the 2 point cuts through that spot as that was where they headed. We get over there and spot this 3 x 2 that was not there 45min earlier. I range find him to be 65 yards. I know its far but have target shot successfully. I take aim and let one fly, he jumps straight up and bolts, I watch him through my crossbow scope and see him fall at about 150 yds.
An excellent end to the season.

Here is my second entry. Big Game.

We were hunting region 8. Not seeing much and heading back to camp, we pass a small logged off area and at the far edge I saw this 4 point whtetail standing there, I put myglasses on him and yes he is a buck, I better be fast, I jump off the quad jack a shell in and freestanding let him have it, he jumped out of sight but I new he was down. Sure enough he never went far and was lying right there.

this year work kept me at home until the whitetail rut was almost done. as soon as i could i loaded the camper and off i went.
the first day hunting i saw some does and a 4-point that had one antler broken off just above the browtine.
day two i headed to my favorite hole. i got there just at daylight to discover logging slash! my favorite honey-hole was just logging slash lol.
i didn't know what to do. i drove a little further and hiked into the woods.
well it got steeper and steeper til i kept falling on my face in the new snow. said to myself this is no good and headed sidehill and pretty soon the hillside started to break-up into ridges and gullies.
i started my usual whitetail hunting technique which is basically just sitting till i can't stand it any more and then moving to the next good looking spot and maybe grunting a bit.
the morning was getting on and i was running out of patience, i hadn't seen a deer yet and it was 11:30. and then i heard it, a deer is coming.(no sic comments please) then i see him, a decent buck nose down doing the dogtrot along the little ridge below me. i wait (the ridge is pretty thick and i want to get a good look at him) when he gets into an open spot i grunt and he stops in his tracks. of course there's one peckerpole that blocks the perfect lung shot so i line up on his neck and let fly with the 7mm and he drops like a sack of hammers lol.

this is my 08 reg 1 blacktail. was hunting at a friends place in a tree stand we had put up earlier in the season. i saw several does that evening, just at dusk a large doe came out into the open and i was looking at her with the binos. i did a sweep behind her with the binos(leupold 10x50's) and saw this buck coming out behind her. time to put the glasses down and pick up my 7mm. i got a rest and put the crosshairs on him, he wouldn't stop so i led him a bit and squeezed off. the buck dropped so fast he seemed to dissappear, i didn't see it go down. i couldn't believe that i'd missed but i was a bit perplexed as i made my way over to where he'd been. i didn.t see the buck until i got quite close, it was laying in a bit of a hollow and stone dead.

This is my last entry. I got a sechelt roosevelt elk with my bow. Took 16 days to get the opportunity. Passed on a marginal shot at a 5 point several minutes before. The shot was 45 yards.

I want to thank all the participants for making this the BEST hunting contest HBC has ever had! We've had more entires and more prizes than ever. It was great seeing everyones pictures and stories. from brand new hunters to well seasoned vets. All in all, a great turn out.

We managed to get the best youth turn out yet, and thanks to our generous sponsors, had plenty of prizes for them.

I'd like to thank all the sponsors and individuals that donated prizes, it was great to see lots of people coming out so generously. In particular the ones that seem to always donate: Leaseman, Frenchbar, Mr Dean, Bowzone Mikey, Wild Images and HBC Sponsor Omineca Source for Sports.

You can order 325WSM's excellent sheep DVD from him, order Jack Lays great book about predator control from him, take your taxidermy work to WILD IMAGES and if you need to lease a car or truck, look no further than Leaseman!

( I thought I would throw in a plug for everyone I can- They didn't ask me to :) )
