Thanks . They work well as a team , Those are the live stock bells i was mentioning before , they are pretty good for keeping track of them when they are rooting around close , we use Radio tracking collers which they are not wearing in the pictures but i wouldnt consider dropping them in the distant bush with out them we have way to much invested in the hounds to risk them being lost or just waste a day trying to locate them when you can do it with the collers in a 1/10 th of the time
.
I think you should be able to use your hounds for all game (Cat , Bear, Racoon) sure your hound might do much better on one species then another but it should be able to hunt them
Winnie has a real hate for cats and Lucy a bit more for bear I think, put them together and they are just trouble for what ever they are chaseing.
I would like to breed Winnie to another Cold nosed Walker on her next cycle but i really have to make some choices first.

A hound or any tracking dog for that matter is able to see scent like we see colours so once they have focused on one particular scent they should be able to focus on it with tunnel vision. Dogs have been used in this manner for centuries (think about all the other tracking dogs and there uses)
Dell Cameron a well known houndsman used his same dogs on all game as did the majority of the old school houndsmen.

another intresting fellow is Ben Lilly who hunted for the us govt as a predator controller among other things (big list)

Both the parents of the Winnie dog were used for both and are considered do it all big game dogs . I figure it is alot more work to have a dog that can pursue Cat and bears without getting killed but in the long run more enjoyable.
also when the cat season is on the bears are denned up pretty good so a dog should be able to focus on the cat track (especially in the snow) even if the hound Has ADD:)

The pup in the first picture is a very good looking dog. This using dog's to track/chase bears (my favorite quary!!) is starting to sound like a good idea. Not sure if I have the patience for it, but I'm curious to know if you can do it with only one dog. No room for two where I live!!!!

I just bred Winnie tonight to a really top notch dog (ukc registered Walker) . The pups from this breeding should be fantastic (big & fast , cold nosed and loud). I will put a couple of pictures in the gallery of the male . He has a really cold nose and a voice like a lion

Nice hounds!!!

I have drevers, they're small so aren't used for bears. Here's our girl:http://pic18.picturetrail.com/VOL866/3901601/8067171/106956521.jpg

I know someone who breed carelian bear dogs.....now those dogs can hunt bears alone. They aren't good with other dogs!!!

nice looking hound you have there . how many do you have?

As for karelin bear dogs for hunting bear they are not a very good choice .(if you want a dog that will put game up a tree by itself look into Airdales from working stock)
They are more of a fad and granola fancy then they are effective on bears for the purpose of hunting . They are no more suitable for hunting bear then akitas, huskies or any of the other spitz/laika types that like to chase and be aggressive .
It isnt that i dont like the breed, it is just that folks that dont hunt think it is a bear hunting dog (thats like trying to say an irish wolfhound is a wolf hunting machine)

There are better tools for the job ones with cold noses and good voices
well enough of my rant:mrgreen:

have you looked at chilliwack area for bunnies? how far do your dogs range? have you though about tracking coon?
have your dogs been trained to be scent specific or game specific? do you have a tracking harness and have you tried them on deer yet?

right now Winnie (the first picture) is getting to be as big as a water buffalo LOL! so i am looking forward to some nice pups in the next few weeks

We have 2 drevers. They've only ever been used on hares or rabbits. I have a tracking harness but I don't know how they'd work on a leash. They like to go on their own and eventually chase the rabbits towards us. Our male is the best at it because that's the one my Dad likes to use the most. My husband & I are new to hunting, & want to do it so the dogs can work. I have to still do the CORE exam so right now I go with my dad & just watch. I like it though, & would like to get out there more when I get my own license. We all have to start somewhere.

I'm glad you said that about Karelians, the person who has them brags about what great hunters they are.....I prefer hounds!

Here's our boy:http://pic18.picturetrail.com/VOL866/3901601/8067171/109965551.jpg
