Hey guys.

For those of you who use veterinary services I was wondering what your experiences have been like. Over the years I've dealt with a few who were passable and a couple who were just amazing.

My current vet, Mike Goldberg here in Vancouver, is simply amazing: You can tell that he's really passionate about every single animal that comes to him. He's also a Veterinary homeopath as well as a DVM so he knows a lot about natural remedies. Not overly pricey either ;-)

I'm very impressed. Lucky to have such a good vet so close too.

We use Atlas Animal Hospital in Vancouver at the corner of 41'st and Fraser. When our dog started having siezures 2 other vets said there was nothing that could be done and suggested we put her down.Atlas was the first place that would treat her and that was about 5 years ago and she is still a happy dog, with only 1-2 siezures a year know.

Sorry that right there would eliminate him from the running if you ask me .

Someone that offers that service is merely pandering to the idealogical desires of the latte sipping navel gazers.

does he also hold healing circles and hold paws while singing Coomb bye ahh!!

I have a hard time with vets. Seems like its a license to steal. They Know most people will pay anything to save fluffy. I accidently cut my dog once while trying to remove a matt from behind his ear, it was a nice gash but wasn't bleeding. Took him in, told me it was going to be a whole bunch of money, Had to put him out etc. I told them not to worry about it, I would take him home and shoot him. Then they said it would probably heal on it's own and sold me some antibiotics

We use Dr. Burton he's as down to earth as I could find. He's the vet that looks after all the critters at the game farm in Aldergrove.

Many vets these days won't crop the tails on Rotties and other breeds that do it. They think it's crule. The breeds been around for 2000 years, but now it's standard is to be changed because of a bunch of "DO GOODERS"

Our cat got hit by a car a few years ago... Came home not being able to move it's back legs... CLEARLY it's back was broken... My girlfriend was in hysterics so fine, take it the vet... She calls me from the vet to say they need to keep him overnight to stabilize him... That will be $600 and then they still need to figure out what's wrong with him. I said forget it... Put the cat down... They wanted $200 for that. I said fine... Bring the cat home I'll kill it for free.

The Vet put the cat down and charged my girlfriend nothing. I took the money we saved and bought some more hunting gear.

He's a regular, bona-fide doctor of Veterinary medicine with a lot of years in the biz. - He has been very helpful with food supplements for my dog who has nasty allergies. This, when other vets told me all kinds of crap and did nothing. Now my dog is fine.

I see why you might think homeopaths are just a bunch of Shirley-Maclane,tinkley-winkley charlatans. I used to think that homeopathic stuff was a crock too, but not all of it is...

I thought it was all BS, but on a more human note, I personally suffered for five years with a sudden onset of strange, light headed spells, dizziness and nausea - a living hell. It was like having a permanent, un-earned hangover and nobody could figure out why it happened or what it was. Five doctors, even more specialists, Xrays, body scans, MRIs, neurologists etc, none of the white-coat MDs could figure it out. But a naturopathic doctor did. Actually, she probably saved my life.

So, while I'm sure there might be a few snake-oil salesmen out there and no doubt a fair share of scammers and downright morons too, not all are like that.

So from personal experience I'm a tad more open minded about such things than I used to be ;-)

When I was in Vancouver, I used Dr Kevin Shura...he treats all the in-service K9's (as well as retired) for the VPD...he is just incredible...especially with the larger breed dogs- and very well priced. Every person I have passed along to him has been extremely impressed with the service and compassion shown by his team.

we have dr Bruce Burton in Abbotsford for our Vet - he is the vet hire for most of the movies filmed with animals as well as the vet for the Vancouver Zoological Centre - he is the kind of vet who is in this field for the animals not for the money grab.

Both my daughters have been so inspired by him that one is in college now getting her Veterinary Assistant license and the other is heading to PG for bachelor of science degree at UNBC then transfer to Saskatchewan for her veterinarian degree after she graduates highschool next year.

With our menagre of animals in our home - Dr Burton was the choice and we are greatful to him.

an example - our dog Sissy (blue heeler) blew out her ccl tendon in her knee (kind of like an athlete and their acl) the big fancy vet in Aldergrove quoted $2500.00 for surgery and $1500.00 for rehabilitation physiotherapy after wards and the surgey would be done at UBC because he didn't have the facility to complete the surgery and other charges would be x-rays and blood work - Dr Burton charged $800.00 for the surgery and $35.00 for physio and trained my daughter how to do Sissy's physio and no x-rays were required or blood work - she had this surgery in May last year was back on her leg in 6 weeks doing what Blue Heelers are bred to do - she came close to being put down because we could not afford the surgery when we had the first quote and were devistated - because of dr Burton, Sissy has a new life and will be with our family for many more years

Does any one know of a good vet looking to relocate. Fort Nelson does not have a vet that lives here. We have to wait every 2 to 3 months for a vet from Alberta to have enough free time to come up for a week end.
If we can't wait that long then she is a 3 1/2 hrs drive to Fort st John.
We have lots of cats, dogs, cattle and horses in our area, and would have more if we had propper care.

I've been through several vets here in Richmond and ended up with Dr Shoffley at the Richmond Animal Hospital. I am very happy with the service he has provided. He seems to have a good touch with dogs and he doesn't gouge us for every little thing.

I'm surprised you guys don't have a vet up there with all the folk who have dogs and stock.

Maybe the city can make it worthwhile to recruit a decent vet from down south?

I think the amount of money that people make up here the Vet would make tons of money. even if he was alittle more expensive, it would not matter considering that a round trip to Ft St John and a hotel would run about 400.00 bucks.

They say if you want to make money come up north, and if this Horn River Basin gas find plays out, this town could be a new Fort Mac.
The best part about Fort Nelly is 40 min north and you'er looking @ Stone sheep year round

Maybe Fort Nelson needs to advertise for a vet - ya never know.

Funny, you mention Ft. Nelson being a 3.5 hour drive from Ft. St John. For some reason that really surprised me. Dunno why - I guess the first time I drove that way I was going all the way to Whitehorse and the distance between FSJ and Ft. Nelson just seemed...longer ;-)
