I just took the dogs down for a walk to the bay and I was amazed at the amount and different types of birds I saw.

In the span of an hour I saw:

-Canada Geese (kicking myself for not having my shotgun.)
-buffleheads
-golden eyes
-mallards
-widgeon
-green wing teal
-pintail
-swans
-eagles
-otter

I decided to leave the camera home this afternoon and bring the bino's instead and now I wish I hadn't. I saw some nice ducks and had some cool picture I could have taken. This time I went between 4:30pm and 6:00pm. Here are the species of birds I saw. The tide was the lowest I ever recall seeing it.

-hooded Mergansers
-red breasted Mergansers
-bluebills( 2 drakes and 4 females)
-buffleheads
-50 or more green wing teal
-mallards
-pintail
-widgeon
-golden eye ( some nice full plumage drakes)
-Canada Geese
-Swans

When I was young we used to shoot mergansers (target of opportunity) and make a stew out of them. We did this so we could justify shooting them back then. Back east you had a duck limit and a separate limit 10 bird limit on mergansers. Now I’d sooner not shoot or eat them unless I was thinking of getting one mounted. The hooded merganser is a nice looking bird.

Mergansers are nice looking birds, but we just let them fly by. We go after the puddle ducks. My favorite tasting duck is the mallard.

A lot of people like the mallard because of it's size. If I had a choice lb for lb I'd take teal meat.

I like teal just as good. Love how the meat is so tender.

Funny you mention that about the tide, a couple of other guys on a fishing forum I visit mentioned the same thing....alarmingly low tides.
