Were you able to count the number of feathers on its head to see if it was a legal 6 feather grouse? You know, if we open them up for 5 feathers or less, shitheads will slaughter them and they will end up on LEH.

Hey Fisher

They would be asking me all summer "when do we get to go". They really liked the Chetwynd hunt cause there are so many grouse where we deer hunted, after the morning deer hunt and when lunch was done I would put one on each side of the rear rack on the Big red and we'd putt along from camp to the river and back and they would shoot (or try) grouse. One return trip we saw 23, they got 6.

Agreed. The Nosler Partition will tend to splatter on impact, rendering a large portion of the bird's neck inedible. Better choices would be some of the new bonded bullets. KES, you may want to consider one of the magnum calibres next time - I know a well-placed shot from the 270 will do the job, but I feel you may have been a bit under gunned. A minimum calibre in my opinion would be the 340 Weatherby mag.

Yes it's not just the one in your sights you must worry about........there's the others behind him waiting to get you

A sufficient cartridge such as the 340 weatherby already mentioned will penetrate multiple grouse with one shot 8)

But of course it's only sporting to shoot them on the wing......Real Sportsmen never take birds on the ground.....right kootenayelkslayer:wink:

I used to pray they'd sit still so I could sluice 'em with the 12 guage. My dad would just keep walking towards them 'til they flew, and pop them outta the air when they were weaving through the pine trees. He didn't miss. I'll never have talent like that!

I shoot for the base of the neck or head which ever works good with that bird. Never the body.

LOC

I always take head shots with the .22

Bow Walker
02-28-2008, 10:07 AM
Yup, shoot for where the head and neck join up. Right at where his/her jawbone and neck make the thickest part of the head region. Just before the neck tapers down.

Bang! Funky chicken dance.

With a shotgun I aim so that the pattern of shot takes the head and nothing else - well, as little of the neck as possible.

But...with a bow it's a body shot all the way. Unless it's just standing there admiring the scenery and not thinking of anything in particular. Although if he's on an old snag or branch and ther is nothing behind him - it's back to the body.

Phoneguy, I hope you had someone with a high-powered magnum covering you while you videoed that Harrison grouse. Those buggers are unpredictable and you could be attacked and seriously injured at any time. You must have nerves of steel to hold the camera that steady while that cranker strutted around sizing you up!

Elkhound, that's why I drive a big diesel. I'm afraid of what a grouse could do to a lightweight import truck!

No pics, but I still remember the day - up in Northwest Bay logging division of M.B. - that I shot a big Ruffed grouse that was sitting atop a dead snag, about 60 yards away.

I had my very first rifle, a .303 that my dad had bought for my 18th birthday, and it had open sights. Well this grouse was facing away from me and I wanted to just pick his head off. I whistled, he/she stuck its head up for a better look and I let loose.

Now, at this time in my hunting/shooting career, I had not a lot of practice so of course i had to shoot a bit low. The bullet must've gone right up the dirt chute because that poor thing just exploded, and I mean it went POOF!!

Not even a drumstick to be found. A few feathers, but that was it. I still remember the sight to this day - 42 years later...

Thats funny, I still remember one of my first ones, sitting on top of a stump, so get the old 12 ga out, #7 shot and put the bead on his head, BAM, got em', now I look, and look, and look some more, can't find the bugger anywhere! So the stump was chest high and I go right up to it, it was hollow in the center ( About an 10" dia opening) with the grouse inside! Doesn't sound funny writing this but man it was funny at the time!
