A do it all rifle is pretty hard to find, but if I had to have one it would be a stainless Remington 700 in 338-06, 21" barrel, fiberglass stock, Leupold 2.5-8x36 scope. 210 grain Barnes Triple Shock X @ 2700 fps would be the do-all load

Id much rather have a 260 Remington and a 375 Ruger though :D

Ha Ha, and so it is with clibers and rifle manufacturers, each to his own as long as the caliber is suitable.

My new do-it-all rifle is a .270 Weatherby Vanguard and I am happy with it. I am also pleased with my .30-06 and the 7mm.

As has been said, if you ask 100 people you will get 100 opinions. It all depends what you're comfortable with or think will do the job for you.

For one rifle in BC: The Canadian '06 - 338 Win Mag. My choice for one rifle to hunt BC elk and moose in grizzly country.:smile:Of course I consider it cruel and unusual punishment to be forced to have just one rifle:-P

Your best bet is to decide what type of game you are primarily going to hunt. If deer are your primary quarry then a light flat shoot calibre like a 260Rem or 270 would be ideal. These would also work for moose and elk with the right bullets, but are not ideal. If Griz are on the menu a heavier cal like a 30cal mag or 338 would be good starting points.

No point in getting a giant big bore super smasher ultra magnum if you are primarily going to be hunting Whitetails.

What type of hunting you do makes a big diff- brush vs open ground. My rem 7 mm has been a great gun for antelope to elk- it is very flat, reliable, and pacs a decent punch. I like my 270 as well for an all around. I have a 30 30 that I can't shoot well past 150 yards, so I never use it, and a 300 ultra mag (375 necked down to a 300) that is too much for deer and antelope, so again, I don't carry it much.

...and a 300 ultra mag (375 necked down to a 300) that is too much for deer and antelope, so again, I don't carry it much.

Its actually a 404 Jeffery (improved), necked down to .308. Bigger parent case than a 375 H&H.

The 375 H&H full length case necked down to .308 is (amongst others, including the 300 H&H) most well known as the 300 WBY.

And the 375 RUM came after, so its technically a 300 RUM necked up to 375.

Sorry, I can't help myself... :)

Absolutely... :) That was why I made sure to specify "full length case" (so as to compare more directly to the original case). All the others are shortened to 30/06 length (-ish)...but you are correct, they are the more popular "derivatives"!

biggest caliber you can shot well. For me that was the 300 wsm. Almost got the 270 wsm though. If one could shoot the 338 wm or 325 wsm they would be better for grizzly. I have seen lots of big guns sit in the safe cause peolpe don't like the recoil. What a shame that is.

Kick aint to bad and I think it's enough for grizz(I know you can get away with less) and It's not too big for deer imo. That being said I'm looking to get a lighter gun for sheep in the future, possibly a .280 rem

.338 Win. Mag. My personal favourite is my LA Browning BLR with Whitworth Expresss sights from 0-300 yards, Leupold Vari-X III compact 1.5-5x and Lyman 1-piece front ramp. Bought-it used in 7mm Rem. in 1998 for 550.00 and had-it re-bored to .338 for 200.00 and never looked back. if you can't tell, I love my gun. With the auxillary cartridge, I shoot Grouse and Hares with-it too, and as soon as they come-out with a .338 Sabot that shoots 55gr.,6mm bullets, I'll be whacking ground Squirrels with-it!

The old trusted .30-06 has taken more game around the world than any other caliber. It’s still the most widely used today as a do it all cartridge.

I shoot a .30-06 and the equally popular .270 Win. My favorite rifle at the moment is the Weatherby Vanguard.

Caliber and rifle brand are not nearly as important as what has been said here a few times. Learning to shoot, good shot placement and keep in good shooting shape by shooting all year long.

Ah, my first post after lurking for months. There's so much good information shared on this site.

I would say, that if you're getting just one rifle, then either a .308, .270, or 30-06 are very good bets - and note that they are all very closely related calibers. They are big enough, yet small enough to get the job done.

Things to consider: cost of ammo, variety of ammo available, recoil, availability of ammo (if you shoot a less common caliber). You do not need to get a really big caliber that has lots of recoil - you probably won't enjoy shooting regularly if the recoil is any more than what a typical 30-06 has.

As I have shot more at the range and in the field, and have become a much more accurate marksman, I have moved to a few "intelligent" calibers that get the job done extremely effectively and with less recoil (which is not to be underestimated if you spend a lot of time at the range).

My latest picks are:

.223 Remington - brilliantly accurate, affordable to shoot, lots of support. This is a great caliber to spend an afternoon with at the range - but not one that falls into the "best caliber" equation.

6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser - a really accurate, low recoil, fantastic shooting caliber. Not many choices in factory ammo generally available, but hand-loading solves that.

I realize I've wandered off topic now... how can there be just one "best caliber" ?

Its the rifle that you have total and complete confidence in, caliber/cartridge are small players compared to that statement.
In the Coastal Mtns of BC there lived a man who's only protection from the Coastal grizz was a Win mod 94 LA in 30-30 win. he had total and complete confidence in it and it saved his bacon on more than one occasion.
In Africa it might be a old battered H&H 375 or 9.3 X 62 mag, in the Arctic something real small like a .22 Rem or a .243 Win, Alaskans a 30-06 or 338 win mag., etc. Many fella's have a rifle battery of quite a few different chamberings but usually one or two that have that good ole comfort goto thing about them are the ones that see the Lions share of the work.

eaglesnester

If you want to include Grizz then you need a 338 and a partner with a 12 gage back up loaded with slugs to be safe. The 338 can take deer, moose, anything in north America. All you have to do is select the correct ammunition for each intended purpose. Yes the 30-06 and the 308 will do the job all right, but why go under - guned Grizz are tough critters and once you get one riled up he can run dead on his feet over 100 yards with his heart exploded and his lungs full of blood and still kill you before you even know you are dead.

If you ask 100 people, you'll get 100 opinions and at least 50 of them will be 30-06. (mine will be in that 50) But, if you intend to spend a lot of time in grizzly country, and especially if you intend to go looking for a grizzly, then I'll jump on the 338 W/M band wagon. if I was limited to one rifle it would be the 375 H&H you can load 210 grain bullets for deer and sheep, 250 or 270 grain for moose and elk and 300 grainers for grizzlys.
some may think it is overkill for grizzlys but I would rather drop a grizzly when its charging with one shot than have to unload a magazine when its almost on top of you, even though an attack rarely happens I wouldn't like to be seriously injured or killed becuase I was under gunned but it's your choice.
A 338 win mag is also good but it causes more meat damage.

Essentially, if I'm hunting deer but may have a chance at a black bear or moose or elk in an open season I carry a 270.

2X on what todbartell says here. Now for me I like the 06 Springfield in a Remington 700 BDL right hand in Long Action. Wonderful rifle. Now when you bring grizz into the picture you want to use something a little heaver. Although they are taken with a 30 cal rifle it is not recommended. You want something in a 338 magnum or heavier. The 308/3006/300 Win Mag/300 WSM. Great versatility for the variety of game we hunt, reasonable recoil, reasonable cartridge costs.

I haven't included the 300 Weatherby or Ultra Mags because what you get in added range/velocity is offset by recoil and expensive rounds.

308/3006 will meet all your needs if you select the right bullets. The 300 Mags will give you that edge for longer ranges and flatter shooting. But again, good bullet selection is the key for this caliber as well.
