has anybody here gone to africa to hunt lions?

I got my CORE this past fall and I think I am going to put in for LEH in Tanzania. I have a new 710 in 270 sighted in ready to go

I'm no lion expert but I can say I wouldn't use that combination to bag a lion. ;-)

my uncle gave me some 130 grain power shock ammo and according to what I have read, that is suitable for thin skinned game like lion

Ballistic tip, like the dominion 150 grain round nose plastic tip my uncle has for his 308? I would switch ammo type for a rare hunt like this. Thank you for the suggestion

Please refer to the section on lions. It is a legal-minimum so anything lower than .375 is no good I believe. Hope this helps.

Gatehouse will be happy to hear of the .375 rule

lol I am addicted to Cabela's big game hunter, at least my mom says so. But I have been given a trip to Africa as a grad present and I would like to take the opportunity to go hunting, I am in contact with some safaris over there and I will be able to afford a lion cull hunt it seems. :)

Has anyone gotten to go to africa to hunt? what are the restrictions on how much ammo I can take. Can I bring the lion back with me?

my uncle gave me some 130 grain power shock ammo and according to what I have read, that is suitable for thin skinned game like lion I think you should look up some sites about hunting in Africa. You will find lots of info as to what calibers are recommended. I'm sure that a requirement for Lions is a min. of 375 cal., and about a 450gr or more bullet.

lol my whole family pinched in. It is an awesome gift, I have dreamed of Africa since I saw the Lion King when I was a kid.

I shot my brothers 30-06 and it kicked alot. It doesnt have a cushion on it and it really bruised my arm. No way I am going to shoot a bigger gun

Id imagine a lion would weigh at least as much as I do, even more. I saw one in the zoo in Toronto, and it was magnificent. When I passed my CORE I knew I had to fulfill my dream of bagging an african lion.

Has anyone read the book "Death in the long grass"? the writer shoots many lions with 7mm which I believe is less powerful than my 270. :???:

You might want to hunt a few years and get some experience. By the sounds of things your going to get yourself in a lot of trouble. If you get the right gun, recoil pad and practice good shooting techniques the problems with fear of recoil will go away...Good Luck.

The 270 with a 130gr pill is a fine African Lion cartridge, and you can do no better than the Remngton 710, a fine rifle. Have fun on your trip!

good to hear I have what it takes to do the job, push come to shove. I bought the gun with the money I saved up from my summer job, and picked the 270 because it is fast like a laser lol. Also I like the remington because it has a clip and it had a scope on it that was all ready to hunt with right out of the box. :D

02-03-2008, 09:36 PM
from what I have read, the hunting is usually done over a dead animal like baboon or chicken scraps. You sit in a hut and wait for up to 3 hours before the lion will brave himself into letting a hunter see him. A clip is nice because you can instantly load your weapon and you are guaranteed to get 4 shots off before needed to ram the other clip in

Don't feel too bad by the way we're just having some fun with this but realistically it would be wise to have some experience with shooting at a live animal before trying one that can rip you into itty bitty bits while your trackers run away. Also I shoot a 270 and would confidently dump anything on this continent with it except a polar bear a cat thats bigger than most grizzly bears is not something you wan't to be shooting with a light caliber. Try not to let your feelings get hurt sometimes its easy for people with experience to get a kick out of the new guy but don't worry we've all been new to this once apon a time. Nobody's out to hurt your feelings just make sure you do your research first. I have buddies that have been to africa and had a blast without risking getting flayed alive by simba. Hope that helps.

The problem I see there was the hunter wasnt backed up properly by his pro hunter guide, and all group of them failed to kill the charging beast. I believe if they aimed their shots and were more rapid in their firing of their actions, they would of not of been in that situation. I know lions have been known in the past to attack and kill man, but they usually eat antelope. I would feel safe with a 270 in my hands when the lion is in my sights. I read in an article about using fast expanding soft points at high speed on lion with great results. That sums up the 270, the box of bullets I have lists 3060 feet per second at the barrel for the 130 grain Power Shock Soft point!

Thanks for the welcome guys, I love this site! :D

I learnt in my CORE test that the vitals of an animal are what needs to be damaged for a clean kill. My teacher showed us where the heart and stomach are situated, even when the critter is standing in different placements. Maybe they shot that lions paw? lol

I discected the crow I shot for my biology class and found my 22 bullet struck the bird right in the neck and must of shocked the heart into stopping. If I can blast a 270 bullet into the lions neck I would bet my paycheck that I would be a hero to my pro guide lol :D

Dont let these guys shake you yappy I took a grizz for my first kill. People said I was crazy hunting a grizz with my grandfathers 30-30 but shot placement is key. With your 270 aim for the ear canal if you can get close enough as it will be a direct kill thats what I did for my bruin. oh and full metal jackets are an excellent pill for a lion just shoot fast and shoot often good luck man!!!!!

BlacktailStalker
02-03-2008, 11:47 PM
I would practice with your 270 on crows before you target lions, then you'll know for sure you're quick on the draw if you can get a bead on flying crows.
To make it exciting shoot an owl, get it taxi'd and mount it to your hat, crows hate owl and you'll have dozens to shoot in no time.
Just wail on a crow call and they'll come looking.
Welcome to the site, maybe we can get out for a wolf hunt/bbq some time, an exchange if you supersize my meals for free if I ever go through your drive thru window.

well I assume you can, but since I dont know any real hunters I have to ask. Couldnt find anything in the hunting synopsis about being limited to one license, I found where it says I have a certain limit of certain animals on one license, but nowhere can I find only one license. One negative I can imagine of having more than one license would be the cost of all the tags you have to buy  that would add up lol especially on my income

also what is the closest area to the lower mainland where I can hunt caribou? I think their horns are wicked Id love a set to hang in my uncles cabin in 100 mile.

brianscott
02-04-2008, 12:39 AM
I think there is a caribou herd that was just transplanted to Texada Island off of Vancouver Island. Apparently all the tundra that they feed off of is now getting flooded because of the Polar Icecaps melting. I heard they moved the rest of them to Russia.

While you are in Russia book a hunt for the Kamchatka Peninsula for a GIANT grizzly, dont let their size fool you, they drop like rocks when they are shot.
Grizzlies have no natural predators, just like humans, so that makes them lazy, weak and vulnerable.

If you are still worried about the recoil of you gun, try a crossbow.
If cavemen killed mammoths with spears, you should surely be able to take down a pesky grizzly with a crossbow.

PM me when you get back and let me know how your hunt went :)

Yappy !! 1st i think you need to do alittle ground work on stalking. i know there;s no lions where your at however, at this time of year the Shy,Secretive SNOW SNAKE" can be found ..give them a try . watch your back and look high into the trees. keep those extra clips handy also, most times the Snow Snake travels in 2-3's. They are just as fierce and tough as a African Lion, given the chance they will attack your face 1st.. so wear one of those paintball face sheilds O.K take care. we are all wishing you the best of luck in Africa. Maybe we can push up the departure date for you..

Are you not supposed to first shoot an antelope and then wear its hide to have the lion come to you? Personally, I would go catch a salty first and dress up in its hide. Everyone knows a saltwater crocodile can take a lion.

Dont worry about the the minimum calibre requirements, just take the .375 and neck it down to .22, it will shoot fast and flat, or stick to .375 but use a lot less powder, no recoil at all (maybe Gatehouse can help you with this).

I havent gotten to shoot it yet, because nobody other than my uncle has their PAL. Its still in his name until I can take my PAL this summer. Then it will be mine and I will shoot it at the Poco range. It is sighted in from the factory so it will be ready to hunt. Like I mentioned before the scope on my Gamo pellet rifle is similar to the 270 scope so I can just practice in my yard for some highly simulized practice, especially on the compost crows :D

it does have a scope. Bushnell 3 by 9 zoom lens. Manual said it was factory sighted so minimal tuning will be needed. I did read on Chuckhawks that optimal sighting was 2 inches up at 100 yards so I cranked on the dial 8 times according to the scope that will raise the aim 2 inches at that distance. I read Jelvis 30-06 thread and I got alot of good info! lol I will go try it out when I can get the chance *fingers crossed!* :-)

Hey Yappy

If those factory loads kick too much for you. Get someone to load up some really light loads for that 270. Shoot one or two to see where they hit, then go hunting. ;)

I'd just take one box of 20 rnds on safari with you. Only need one shot per animal, so there's no need to pack all that extra weight is there.

Dana's been trying my patience for a while now and I was fed up of it. I gave him a two day time out. That's mild considering I usually give two weeks for the first offense. He had been told that if he didn't like the way things were ran to go visit somewhere else but he insisted to continue.

I can't be on here 24 hours a day 7 days a week to monitor the site. I read this thread and never picked up on it being in the wrong forum section so I'll take the blame. I like that, you could spend countless hours and days and years like some of us in pursuit of lesser game , but your going for Lion!!! I like that more!!! When you get back from your Africa trip, you can simply pick and choose who you want to hunt with!!! Would be neat to maybe see you Hookup with some of these folks from this site!!! Hell, most would be proud to have you jump in the truck for the 10 hr drive to hunting camp!!! I bet as we speak Milo Hanson is teary eyed knowing his record buck is going to be De Throned when you return!!! Good Luck Yappy, were looking forward to hearing all the details of the "270"LION Hunt!!! Also, when you get your Photo's taken with your Lion, don't wear your work clothes or your hat! I've been in the same bush with a leopard, you never see them but they are there, you need big cahonies for this.

Your lion hunt will be organized for you but I have a few tips.
1) Forget the scope on your rifle, you hunt with open sights and they are factory sighted as well.
2) Take the scope off and go the Vancouver zoo and look at the bearded guy so that you know what you will have to shoot because when it happens its all a blurr
3) don't worry about your scent, when the bearded guy comes through the bush is will smells like Chillawack around you. ( eat lots of garlic the night before that might help when you miss)
4) Get the biggest gun you can get your hands on. If you don't have the money take your brothers 22 and your uncles 30-06 and buddies 7mm and duct tape them all side by side with your 270. Line up the triggers so that you can pull them all at the same time. Don't worry about the recoil or the sound, everything happens in slow motion at that time.
5) You have to find the Kudu first then your skills are honed.
6) Last tip. Don't mingle with the locals too much, you will come back with seafood if your lucky

Good luck man I hope you make it.

He is shooting a 7x57 Mauser, fast gun not to much kick but enough power for an experienced Hunter .Provided ranges are short, this remains a great choice for larger dangerous game like a Lion. And believe me he know's what he is talking about. So do you research and gain some experience.

What a hacker. No calibre under 375 for DG...... but then again, Yappy is no long with us...

Some, not all African countries require a .375 Minimum..

And I didn't talk directly to yappy, I spoke to a gentleman that knows him and his father (or grandfather? Can't recall)

I like the idea of necking down a .375 to a .22.

Now that would be one fast cartridge.

With a full metal jacket, that sucker would barely slow down, and give you more shots at the lion as it runs toward you.

Dollar value earned = Priceless.

Good luck hunting Lion in Africa,my Onkel goes all the time hunting in South Africa and from him I know you are required to have quit some experience or they will not take you on a Safari.

Money is the only real requirement to hunt lions in most countries that offer lion hunts. Google up some safari companies, lots offerthem, and they don't ask for only experienced clients. How does one get lion experience without hunting lions?;-)

lol my whole family pinched in. It is an awesome gift, I have dreamed of Africa since I saw the Lion King when I was a kid.

I shot my brothers 30-06 and it kicked alot. It doesnt have a cushion on it and it really bruised my arm. No way I am going to shoot a bigger gun

Try the ruger 10-22LR but make sure that your "clip: is always full. 10 shots in the guts and the lion will go into the tall grass and die (bleed out). Be sure to give it at least 10 min before you go in to get it. This wors great on the elk in cranbrook, and a lion is not as big as an elk.

He who laugh's last!!! I seen the Lion Yappy came home with! He had a Full Mount done, and my God!!! It takes up the whole living room in his little single wide trailer!!! Story go's, Yappy and 4 of his Gun Bearer's had being tracking this old, battle scarred Male Lion for best part of 2 weeks! They ran into lots of smaller Lion's, but from what Yappy Doddle told me, he wanted the King of the Jungle for his first Big Game Animal! That morning all hell broke loose! They had the huge Lion cornered in a small brush pile, lots of thorn's, and very hard to get a good shot through! So, what does our Yappy Doddle do you ask, he tells all the Scout's to stay back, he then, if you believe this!!! He lowers his 270 Rifle and charges the Thorn pile, hoping to scare the Beast out so he can get in a good kill shot! Now, we've all seen Yappy, and he's not a big guy, what, about 5-5 or 5-6 at best? Anyway's, he's only about 12 to 14 feet from the brush pile, when out charges the Lion, straight at him! The Gun Bears can't fire because there's way to much chance of killing our Yappy!!! Now, I seen the Video, he slowly lowers the 270, steps to the side, and, as the Lion try's it's damnedest to tear Yappy apart with it's 6 inch claw's and massive teeth, the man laugh's, yes Laugh's for Christ Sakes, sticks the barrel of his 270 Savage into the huge lions left ear, then pull's the trigger!!! I don't want to wreck what happened next, your never going to believe it!!! I got the Video here, so give me a few minutes and I'll post it!!! You guys are going to shit your pants watching Yappy Doddle at his Finest!!! Give me about 5 minutes, make some Popcorn, grab a cold drink, and watch one of the most incredible Hunting Video's that I've ever seen!!!

But, I'm having a heck of a time, seems I've only got I plug in here that works, so I'm running a extension cord over from the neighbors place, and he's a good 1/4 miles across the field from my place! So, as long as the horse don't start chew'in on the dam this again, I should have the Video for all to see here in no time!!! So, don't get your undies in a knot!!! It'll be worth the wait, believe me!!!

All kidding aside guys,,in the 60s, an american named Bob Lee shot 9 lions with a .270 in his hunting career,,the 10th one killed him. His death had a big part in the .375 Min. for dangerous game rule in Africa. Does his record indicate the .270 is adequate for lion? I was an obsererver on an African lion hunt,,and you wouldnt catch me chasing those things with a .270!

Petros65

Agreed 100% ---- but there is the small matter of the minutes between the shooting and the dying part that can create a bit of stir. Lions are exceptionally robust and unless you manage a brain shot the cat will find you and hurt you (a lot ---- really a lot). Unless of course it's one of those tailored, canned hunting trips, then yup a .270 will be perfect. In Africa animals hurt hunters that don't use enough rifle.

I am so glad to hear that your uncle Charles is still around to give you sound advice and that the Darwin family is doing well! I think the 270 is perfect for a lion, video gaming is great preparation for a hunt in Africa, you should start breaking in your boots while playing. Don't forget, the last training session on the screen has to be with your real gun! Ammo? you really only need a few rounds, one to sight in, then one er animal. In reality nobody takes less than 20 boxes for 2 weeks. Please don't hesitate to ask here if you have any further questions, there are loads of experienced Africa -hunters here who'd are more than happy to keep you out of trouble!

The 270 with a 130gr pill is a fine African Lion cartridge, and you can do no better than the Remngton 710, a fine rifle. Have fun on your trip!

This has nothing to do with hunting lions, but it's in Namibia . I'm being guided on a trek after black rhinos. We are travelling in one of Land Cruiser safari rigs through this nice little valley. I ask the guide why wasn't there native farms. He said lions. They would only have few cows and the loss of one was a big deal.

Oryx taste good. I cooked some steaks on a braai, (BBQ). We were a self guided, self driven safari. A 4x4 with a roof top tent. I was hoping to hear lions roaring, hyenas laughing, and jackals singing while laying in bed. Only got to hear the Jackals singing. But we did see lions and hyenas. Leopards come through camps at night. One camp site in the middle of nowhere had warning about them. Baboons can cause a mess. I carried a slingshot and pellets. In fact the fences around the concession houses were mostly for them.

05-17-2020, 11:23 AM
The sling shot you had was a better weapon than the Rem 710.
