I have no hunting experience and I was just wonder what the average distance is when you encounter deer, moose, etc...

it depends on how you hunt, if you are a still hunter in thick bush you will encounter much closer but if you are a high country hunter you will usually first see them while glassing and that can be up to several miles away. And so on..

My longest shot was 160 yards. Closest was 30 yards. Some of them I've spotted them a few km away. Like kev said, depends on how you hunt.

Define "encounter". Do you mean shooting distance or when you first see them? Deer are funny that way, they are where you find "em. No one can give you a difinative answer on that. Depends if you are in a blind or walking or road hunting. Rifle or bow? Best is to just get out into deer country and spend some time and "earn your bones". Spend a season out there working at it and you will have your answer, and hopefully more than track soup to show for it.

thanks for the responses, but to be more specific deer or moose in thick bush hunting with a rifle, shooting distance and will be walking. I will be starting off in section 3-32 (i think) because my friend owns a cabin there. In that scenario would do you think the average distance would be.

I have found that the majority of 1st encounters tend to be a lot shorter than the one would expect. I hunt using every method imaginable, from road hunting on the quad, to spending hours behind the spotter. The majority (75%) of animals I encounter tend to be less than 100 meters away, and more often in the 25 meter range. The ones spotted at long distances tend to be the more enjoyable stalks. Sometimes you have a km or more to cover for a decent shot. The terrain is much different from a km away, that big tree, the deer were under no longer is big, that clearing is really a briar patch. You know their there, but where. Really does get the ticker tickin.

I have shot deer as cloes as 6yard and as far as 250yards.It is a hard to say the average distance because there are too many factors that come into play.

I'd bet if you polled it... 90 % of ALL game is taken at ranges well under a 100 meters

Shot a black bear in self defense at about 12 feet, then shot a blackie at 370 paces. Most shots are between 80-200 yrds. My deer this year was about 100 or so yards, My moose was about 150 yrds. Our elk was about 200yrds, and my buddies blackie was at 50 yrds. Shot my second LEH bull moose at about 250 or so yards. Just need to practice shooting at all distances, and in different positions. Know what your gun and ammo can do in different situations. Moosin

closest live deer i have to me is 1.5 feet ...then she came outta her skin when I said "Boo!" .... my average shot is under 20 yards now ...Of course I bowhunt and thats 90% of the fun of bowhunting is getting up close and personal ... I would say that the average rifle shot is taken 80 and 140 yards

Big game?

Closest shot was with a bow on a black bear, lets see, I shoot a 28" arrow, and it wasn't clear of the string, so, maybe 20"?
Longest, some yards past 500 (and no, I'm not gonna say how many).

Small game, shot a ground squirrel once with a 22 between my feet when we noticed the dirt starting to boil. Range might've been about 6 inches.
Loooongest was a bit over 800 yards on a coyote. (Yes, there was some luck involved, as that one was the 6th shot in the sequence.)
