So I removed the set of Elk ivories form my Roosie and I am not sure what I want to do with them.

I am not a ring man, hell I do not even wear my WR as I just cannot stand anything on my fingers, so I have been thinking about a matching pair of necklaces, his and hers. She is all for it, but ask what else was there.

So what do you people do with your elk ivories?

Also if we go with jewellery, has any body had any dealing with our sponsor Lugaro Jewellers? I will support anybody who supports us, just would like some feed back.

Cheers

I had a conversation in PM about getting some custom jewelery done up. She told me they don't do it in house but they have a custom jeweler that travels from store to store and he's the one who does the special orders. Contact Ioulia she is a member on this site or Derek p her husband if you have any questions. I think Mr Dean had bought some jewelery from them at one point in time.

The canines of elk bulls and cows are known as "elk teeth," "buglers," "ivories," or even elk "tusks." Bulls were once killed for their ivory teeth alone, which are the insignia of a renowned fraternal organization. These unusual Elk teeth, were prized possessions of the Native Americans of the Great Plains. They were used to adorn dresses and robes as well as for necklaces and pendants. Some dresses had in excess of 1000 of them attached as decorative trim. Today, elk teeth remain a prize of the successful hunt and are fashioned into rings and other jewelry selling for thousands of dollars.

another option I have seen is to have them inlayed into a knife handle, or polished up and inset into the picture frame with the pic of your bull

My Grandpa is making me up a Silver Cast sheep head, with my Elk Ivory inset on the back. It will be for a necklace...

It's actually pretty cool. He showed me the tiny wax form for the sheep head last week, it's a copy of the chadwick ram.

LOL!!!!!!!

I mentioned that to the wife, the earings that is, and she was not sure, same as the necklace. So they have been sitting in the little box waiting for someone to make up his/her mind.

Maybe I will put them in a couple Tomic plugs for good luck.......

I am still leaning towards a matching set of necklaces, although I do not wear one, she does.

Will come up with a great Idea and see what happens.

Cheers

A good friend of mine is a master goldsmith and gemologist. http://www.stephenfortner.com/ He does great custom work and is reasonable. I had him create a custom diamond ring for my wife in celebration of 20 years mutual enslavement.

Consider having him create the necklace with a matching gold piece bonded to the centre ivory.

I keep putting them in places and forget where I put them http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon11.gif ,I do have a few in a box ,last year I lost two of the ivories to them dam pack rats.

I would say that if I wanted to do something with my ivories it would be a nickles I would make ..

The father-in-law grew up around Sharpes Lk. many years ago & there was an old fella (ex-Northwest Mounted Police) living in the bush. He had done just that, only with deer teeth.
I'm sure it made for a real Colgate smile.

My understanding is that each individual elk has only one set of ivories and the rest are just teeth.
Both cows and bulls have these ivories which, it is said, are remnants of ice age times when they actually were tusks.
I know I bought a huge necklace of elk teeth at a flea market once and was asked if they had any ivories with them. Unfortunately they were all teeth.
Elk are similar to the deer family where they have no teeth on the front of their upper jaw, however unlike other ruminants they do have the ivory. The rest of their mouth are just teeth.
Please correct me if i am wrong, but their value lies in the fact that each animal only produces two actual ivories.
