I was looking at there for fishing/duck hunting. What's your thoughts? I don't want to pay an arm and a leg but I want a half decent wadder.

I have 4 or 5 pair of Cabelas waders and have no issues reccomending them. Most recently I picked up a pair of their dry plus breathables and love them! Otherwise the 1600's are my choice. Stay away from velcro on the straps, buckles are the way to go!

One of the big benefits of Cabelas is their service and return policy, second to none! Make sure you check out the bargain barn!

I was looking at the 1600's as well but I also want to use the same wadders for float tub fishing and back packing them in to some remote lakes in the spring / summer. The weather isn't as cold on the Island as it probably is in some of the marshes on the mainland so I figured the 800's would do as double duty.

I had a pair of Cabelas ultimate waidders about 8 years ago and they leaked at the crotch. The velcro straps also stuck to my whool sweater and after about a year I couldn't use the velcro as all the little hooks had broken off.

Mark,

Totally agree on the 1600's, that's why I bought the breathables, I love them! I don't think they would be my choice if I knew I was in thigh deep water all day, but for general use, and especially for longer walks or work that gets you sweating they are the cat's meow!

I think the breathables (Dry plus) have 1200 grams in the feet, whatever it is they are warm and toasty and comfy!

Very best,

Ian

hunting wadders

Ohhhhh......."waders".......I was expecting a duck hunting thread as I thought you left the "L" out of "waddlers" and that was your affectionate/pet name for ducks?!?! :-P:-P

Speaking of waders, can someone recommend me a pair? My budget is about $100. I'm thinking of hitting Joe's or Sportsman's Warehouse down in Burlington next week (don't want to buy something without trying them on first, so online is probably out). Camo or not, doesn't matter, hoping to use it to double for fishing as well.

Two sports shops here in town have ~4 choices under $150. Shouldn't be to hard to get something usable.

Which shops would you be referring to? (I hope it's not in Vernon )

On my second pair of seatux waders (second in 10 years). A pair of polyprop underwear or, if it's really cold, the HellyHansen blue fuzzy lj's and you're good to go all day sloshing around in the bog or lake.

Can pick 'em up for a good price from time to time or even used.

Does one wear rubber boots over these or something?

I wouldn't mind picking this pair up, except used ones how does one check if there are any water leaks?

I currently have the 1600 and the 600 dry plus, I find with the water temp. here I use the 1600 most often because I fish in them as well as hunt. Even in the early duck season where I'm sitting for hours I prefer the 1600's, they just seem to be more comfortable, although I'm wearing shorts under them!
Ian hit's the mark with his suggestions although I must disagree on the Velcro, I loved my Cabela's Ultimate Hunting Wader the only problem is that these waders are standard sizes so depending on your body type and foot size it can be a problem getting the Velcro straps to fit snugly but I loved having the flat straps on my shooting shoulder as opposed to a buckle(IMHO)

Well, I picked up the Sea Tux for a good price, they seem to be in very good condition. Can't wait to try them out next week!

I had ordered a pair of Columbia Widgeons from a local dealer but the deal fell through. I have now ordered the 1200's from Cabelas. I will let you know how the perform when they arrive.

Well my wife pulled a fast one on me, I was looking at the cabela's christmas catalog cover and there is a lab pup on the front and I told the wife that I'd be happy with one of those instead of the waders and the float tube. I go to the store for her and while I was gone she called a local breeder to see what was available and told me when I got home that if I wanted a pup I could.

I guess I'll be having cold wet feet and cratch for another year or so until I can afford a new pair of waders..

Was checking this guy out tonight.

personally as an avid fly fisherman i much prefer breathable waders to neoprene. but, they are typically more expensive.

neoprene waders tend to get holes easily, especially if you are duck hunting around thick brush that can rip stuff. but, you can always fix with aquaseal

i'd go breathables, much more comfortable and light than neoprene

Very cute pup Marc! Have you named him/her yet?

Wish I could get one too, but my bro is allergic to dogs so that's a no-no...

Well I don't know how I managed to do it but I talked my wife into letting me get some waders and a wader jacket to boot

Here is my secret, when she asks if she can buy something hesitate for a sec then say ok dear it's Christmas and all... Then a week from then go to her and say "Hey? Wait a sec. I thought we weren't getting anything else for Christmas? " Then she feels guilty and lets you get your waders.

Here is a recently pick of my old waders. As you can see they are well worn and a nice knee patch where my female Lab Penny, who doesn't hunt, enjoys the taste of the salt marsh and neoprene apparently. These waders are at least 6 years old and have at least a tube of silicon sealant on them and still leak.

I decided in the end to go with the ultimate wader in stout because I'm hard on my hunting gear and figured the full armour flex would be the best thing. Picked up a 4-1 wader jacket at the same time in matching Max 4. We've got another serious duck hunter back in the marsh starting next fall.

Good lookin' waders. I like that there is no buckle on the shoulders. I have to leave my left buckle undone cause it is right under where I mount my gun making for some discomfort upon shooting. Might look into those as "the next ones", I could use stout instead of women's ones. The women's ones have more narrow boots too, and that sucks in the cold cause squished feet are cold feet.

Congratulations to a good duck hunting outfit. It always pays off in the long run to go with quality.
