After some scouting, we finally got into a field that geese were in the day before. They got shot up in the morning but came back in the afternoon so we were hoepful they'd still come back. We set up just shy of 5 dozen decoys at around 5:30 and had a flock come in around 6:30. It was 7 Lessers and we dropped 3 out of that group. For the next two hours it was only about 2 more flocks to come in and a single that came right in. All said and done for three guys we got 7 geese and one duck, we didnt even have a robo out and we could of had a limit of ducks there was that many coming into the geese but we wanted the geese bad. 4 big honkers the biggest on the left weighed in just over 12 pounds and 3 cute little lessers. We didnt see any of the big flocks come off the roost but we left them for another day since they got shot up in the same field the day before. I have to say I was very impressed with the DSD decoys, I set them up away from the rest and all together and most of all the geese seemed to want to fly either over them or into them. Compared to our ghgs the paint is so much more realistic and the body looks prefect compared to ghgs which are pretty much oval and not exactly like how geese actually are.

Looking great guys! I've only shot one of the small geese before (about 25 year ago). It was near the end of legal light and I thought it was a mallard, it wasn' much bigger than a mallard either!
I cruised by my cornfield on sunday, still haven't got it in which is good for us. Hopefully the geese are in there and we can get out in a few weeks. Geese have avoided our spot but the ducks hit it heavy...
Looks like you guys are in for an awesome season, keep the pics coming!

Those lessers look like they could be cacklers to me, any close up shots of the heads?

No they are true Lessers. I'm very sure of it. They were far to big to be a true cacklers, since cacklers are way darker in the chest and just slightly bigger then mallards. I've found this website to be the best resource for information on the smaller subspecies.

All the birds are hunted out of Oregon but we see a few of the same come through our flyway. Last year we shot a even smaller goose, and since then I've talked with the fellow who wrote the above article and we've agreed it was a small tavernor goose. The size of a cackler but too light of chest and too long of culmen

All 3 that we shot are lessers, in about 2-3 weeks we get a huge push of them coming down, and the ones we shot have longer culmens then tavs. but since we are much higher then oregon the ones we shot could of also been a richardson. Ahhh theres just too many subspecies around to know for a fact I guess. I love reading about them though.
