8 Portia Simpson

NEW

Portia Simpson
Gamekeeper, 24

Lives Aberdeen, for now.

Who she? One of Scotland’s few female gamekeepers. Spent two years working at the Ardverikie estate (which features in Monarch of the Glen) and just finished a stag season at Letterewe estate in Carn More, near Inverness. Starting work at Conholt estate, west of London. Modelling also beckons. Portia has been asked to endorse Barbour clothing.

Conquests Nothing to speak of.

Haunts Crawling across sodden heather.

Pluses Drab? Nah. She always wears make-up.

Minuses No chance to impress her with fine wining and dining. Her most recent accommodation lacked electricity, and she bunked down to read each night by candlelight.

Do Cook her venison, which she adores. And be outdoorsy.

Don’t Be queasy. Disembowelling deer is part of the job. And no smelly feet, she hates that in a man.

Women take on male gamekeeping tradition

JOHN INNES

AN INCREASING number of young women are defying tradition and training to become gamekeepers.

Colleges are reporting record numbers of girls and women enrolling on courses, but have warned that they still face a wall of prejudice in the chauvinistic shooting world.

At Borders College in Newton St Boswells, one of Scotland’s main gamekeeping colleges, there has been a 25 per cent increase in the number of young women training for the profession.

The college’s gamekeeping director, Andy Winwood, said: "The ladies are very enthusiastic and can be equal to men in this job. But sadly shooting in the 21st century continues to be ruled by Victorian values. The girls will have to prove themselves twice as good as men to obtain a job."

North Highland College in Thurso has also been inundated with female students studying gamekeeping.

John Watters, the head gamekeeping tutor, said: "The girls prove efficient and confident workers, yet only one of those who have passed through here has achieved something like full-time employment.

"Sporting-estate owners appear reluctant to hire young women as underkeepers - the first rung of the gamekeeping ladder. That’s an old-fashioned attitude which will be hard to break."

Judith Ward, 16, and Elaine Heard, 17, are two of the growing number female hopefuls alongside 13 young men on various game-rearing and keepering courses at Borders College.

They are convinced that they will overcome the prejudice and become underkeepers once they complete studies at the college in Newton St Boswells. They are determined to enter a profession that will provide them with less than £700 a month, a tied cottage and use of an estate vehicle.

Judith, whose parents run a Cumbrian sheep farm, said: "No-one’s going to put me off by saying a gamekeeper’s work is too isolated for a woman. I’ve spent most of my life in lonely places on Mum and Dad’s sheep farm.

"I love the lonely places and the thought of working as a keeper on a shoot would be my dream-come-true. Soon women gamekeepers will be the norm - not the exception."

Elaine, from Jedburgh, said: "Things are definitely starting to change for the better for women becoming gamekeepers."
