i would like to know how people feel about the marlin 336 as the only hunting rifle in my gun safe. Would a 30-30 serve for deer and would it be suitable for protection while out hunting, perhaps a marlin in a bigger calibre?
Thanks for any input

Welcome!

Sure your 30/30 would work well for deer, as long as you shoot within the rifles limitations. Inside 150 yards it would be a fine caliber to use. As far as protection goes.....anything is better then nothing and even the biggest "shoulder dislocation rig" is no better then the shooter using it.

a 30-30 is limited to with in a 100 yds works really well up close iv'e spun black bears right over with them and that blunt nose does a great job on deer but your gonna need a better gun for any distance

That reifle will serve you well. It'll teach you to become a good shooter AND it'll force you to become a great hunter.

Sneaking up on the game is half the fun.

a 30-30 will serve you well, within 100-150 yards, like everyone else said. I would reccomend about a 30-06 for low recoil and distance of up to about 300 yards. Have fun hunting!
