Hi guys,
I'm new too the web site, and i'm planning on buying a new .22 to add to my collection. I have found heaps of info about .22s on this site but not much about lever actions. I'm sold on the look of the lever actions and I have been looking into the Henry. Just wondering what people thought of these guns. I'm looking at the .22 Mag. I have also heard good things about the .17 HMR. I will be using it for grouse hunting as well as cans.

Any info would be great. I'm really pleased with all the valueable info in this site!

Thanx Chris

Welcome,

l own a browning .22 lever and it will hold its own against any of the production .22's on the market. Short lever stroke, very accurate, short rifle and no matter what you load it with (even combo shorts, long and long rifle), l have never had a problem with feeding or ejecting. l also own a .22mag and although its a fun gun to shoot and you do get alot more range.....the price of ammo is hefty compared to what it costs to keep a regular .22 in business. For plinking and grouse, a .22 will give you everything you want without taxing the piggy bank too hard keeping it fed.

Have a look at a Marlin 39A. It's a nice rifle.

Thanx alot for all the info. I agree that for the amount of ammo I will be going through and for the price difference the .22LR is the way to go.
That Marlin looks pretty sweet and I read some really good reviews on it.
But what about the Henrys?, they are priced well. Does this mean that they are garbage or just mass produced?
Are the .17HMR expensive and hard to find? I havn't seen them at my usual ammo shop, Good old Cantire.

My hunting partner uses a 9422 in .22 mag. on the trapline, and the only complaint I have was the crappy back sight.

The BL22 is the best, followed by the Marlin Model 39A or Win. model 9422.

I have Henry's in 22, 22 Mag and 17 HMR, all the "base" model except the 17 HMR which is a Golden Boy.
They are all very well made but can use an upgrade on the "iron" sights.
The 22 is a nice, small, light rifle for carrying around when hunting grouse or rabbits. I've also used it to get the wife ( quite a petite gal ) out shooting and to introduce her Cousin's kid to shooting. He has a physical handicap which makes it quite difficult to properly hold and operate rifles, the 22 lever worked well.
The 22 Mag is similar to the 22 except of course it's a mag with the corresponding higher priced ammo. Gives you a bit more range and "oomph" for the critters but the cost of 22 Mags takes it out of the plinking range.
The 17HMR is a beautiful rifle, full sized, all nice and shiny, octagonal barrel, etc. Feels a lot more like a "real" rifle than the 22 calibres. I just plink at the range with it. Shooting tin cans with 17's can get expense pretty quick. Son uses a 17HMR single shot for grouse and bunnies now and loves it, says he will never go back to 22 for that type of hunting.
IMHO you really can't go wrong with a Henry rimfire.
Also have Marlins, a Puma and a Savage in centre fire levers but that's a whole 'nuther topic.

The marlin golden 39a is hard to beat. It's the longest produced firearm in the world for a reason.

Marlin model 97 if you can find one is hands down the nicest leaver 22. I don't like the pistol grip on the 39a. Browning bl is a very close second.

I own a Henry "frontier model" lever action in .22wmr, smooth action, shoots well and I like the octagon Barrel. GL which ever way you go.

My old BL22 is reliable, has a nice short throw, is deadly accurate, fun to shoot, and always by my side.

Maybe my favorite gun!

Another vote for the Browning BL22 here as far as I am concerned there isn't a better 22 lever action rifle out available.

I grew up shooting one of these and still have one.

Last fall I installed a shortened butt stock to fit my almost 9 year old son he has had a lot of fun with it.

Wow! this is an old thread! I see newbie Buglet dug it up. Funny how members will post on a resurrected thread without looking at the original post date and then assume it must be new.
