I myself like my sako .270, it is one smooth shooting gun.

45-70 I bought it for back up when I drew a Grizzly draw in one of the inlets. Planned on using a longbow with a buddy for backup, but still wanted a good nock down power gun close to me. I use it for guiding now and backup for bears with the hounds. Great short little gun!

.375 H&H. Will be my favorite for ever and ever. Good knock down power. Adequate range 95% of the time.

Only one? My 25/06 is quickly becoming my favorite kick around gun. Accurate, easy on recoil, and big enough to do 95% of my hunting requirements. I enjoy the big magnums l own, but when you get to reloading in excess of 100 grs of powder per cartrige, they usually aren't the toys you want to take out for a casual afternoon of target shooting, or plinking around.........

30.06 because it was the one all around calibre that was most suggested when I was getting into shooting, many moons ago and it just stuck. The more I learn the more it still sticks.!!!!!!!!

I shoot a .270 win because thats the gun I was given when I was 9 and I've never used anything else, Excellent knockdown power for Mule and Whitetail deer, sheep, elk and even the odd moose. If I was going to hunt moose seriously I would go bigger .338 mag maybe.

I'm partial to my 7mm mag. Don't know why I got it, since I already had a .270 and 30.06, but I just had to have one. For the last dozen years, it has been my mainstay on everything from antelope to moose.

My favorite rifle is my T.C. Contender in .375 Win.Cal.
Topped with a Bushnel Sportsman 1.5-4.5x32 scope.
Rifle is satin stainless and butstock and forend are synthetic.
The reason for this combation is the weight 5lbs 3 oz you can carry it
all day and not have to stay in the bunk the next. As for the Cal.
I know all you big magnum guys out there are laughing right about
now but let me reasure you this little rifle can take down anything from
a rabbit to a moose because I've done it. With any gun you use it within its
limitations. I am what you would call a lonewolf I like to hunt alone,
I like to throw enough gear in my backpack for 2 days hunting and just
go. I have restricted the weight of my pack to 20 pounds that includes
Rifle tent and sleeping gear all food and little water. You can still
drink from the lakes and rivers here on the rock.
All the best and have a safe and succesful hunt.

So far, it's my .35 Whelen built on a FN Mauser action with a Douglas Premium barrel. With a 2-7 Leupold it is a nice handy package and the Whelen performs like the Hammer of Thor on moose.

I recently acquired a .375 H&H in an Interarms Mark 10(thanks Bone Collector). Once I've gotten comfortable with it, I'll be using it for moose.

Remember folks, it's not about 'need', it's about 'want'.

Well I used to have a 6.5x55 and didn't realize how much I really loved it until I sold it. :( The rifle that's my favorite now is my Browning BBR in 30-06, with a Simmons 2.8x10x44 Aetec Scope. That rifle chambers so smoothly I catch myself second guessing if I chambered a round. I keep opening the action to see if a bullet was picked up off the magazine. It is a great rifle, thanks again Grizz.

Toss-up between my .280 Remington 700 Mountain rifle I've owned nearly 20 years and a Stainless 7m/m mag Remington 700 thats been "hot" since I got it in '98. Bought a .338 Win-mag Remington 700 now that I live in BC.

Well when I go hunting it's ussually a toss up between my ruger 77 mk11 30 06 and my md 94 30 30.I have more confidance in the 06 so it ussually wins out but I really like the look and feel of the winchester. For the conditions I hunt and the game(moose and deer)the 06 is more than capable of doing the job.Rarely will I have to get out past 250 yds in the areas I hunt so I see no need for mags.I don't reload yet so the 06 also provide's me with large selections of factory ammo. It's a sweet shooter, stainless with a synthetic stock. My poor 303 british rarely see's the light of day anymore, but it also is good shooter very accurite but weighs about 100 lbs not vey nice for hiking lol.

I have been using a 7mm Rem.Mag for quite a few years. In the past year, the 7mm Mag performed well on a 400+ pound blackie. There are many excellent calibers on the market. I have owned a .270, .243 and a 30-06. All are excellent calibers for chosen North American game. I have chosen to keep one caliber, it was my 7mm Mag.

By far the most successful/prolific rifle in my current collection is my Ruger #1s .338 Win Mag, but everything I hunt with is capable of doing it's job or I get rid of it, I can't tolerate junk very well.

My favourite is my Ruger 77 MKII Stainless in .308win. It is what I am most comfortable and confident with. That said, I do have some recent acquisitions that I intend to try out in the next year or two (.358win, 7x57, 35 Whelen). I think a 7mm Rem Mag is in my future as well.

JUST LIKE MINE!I am really impressed with this 375H&H i have had it for several years and have found it to be accurate, reliable and contrary to what people think recoil is not a problem with the 375H&H (more of a push) . I think for this rifle it is partially due to a good stock design and enough weight.
I have it topped with B&L 3x9 with weaver high mounts that come off quickly so i can use my open sights if the need arises .

My wife has shot it with no problems . (she is an "HONEST" 105lbs)

the rifle she hunts with is a very nice SS & Walnut pre 64 featherweight in 30-06 topped off with a straight 6 power scope.

I read an interesting line from Elmer Keith once, he said that recoil for a .375 H&H was about the same as a 12 ga. 3 in. mag in like weight guns.
You don't hear too many guys bitchin about recoil in their 12 ga. shotguns!
Its as simple as this... rifles kick, off the bench they kick worse. Unless its a real bruiser gun like .458 win. you won't notice recoil when you shoot in the field. Spend some bucks on the best recoil pad you can get, most factory rifles come with so so pads there are many very good pads available ask around. Recoil reducers are also out there if you don't mind added weight. Some like Muzzle breaks but.......they are loud and can really bark.
When you fire a heavy recoiling rifle from the bench "do not lean into the butt" sit upright so as to allow yourself to push back with the recoil. This helps limit the pain of recoil. Next get a sissy pad, even a wool touque between your shoulder and the butt will make it a lot more comfortable. Just remember you will not feel it when you fire at game so whats the big deal.
Sight it in and practice with lite loads or a lighter recoiling rifle, there are lots of options here. Most of the bad kick mystique stems form poor bench technique and too many BS stories " recoil is mostly in your head". "Don't think about it" when you go to shoot focus on the target and the sight picture and then fire.

Tank
01-12-2005, 12:31 AM
i'm definitely inclined to agree....i have not had a problem with the kick on my 375 and have actually found it to be much more bareable than some of the 300 win mags that i've shot. it weighs in at just over 9 lbs and i think that this helps alot......i havent heard any reports from guys who shoot lighter weight 375's.

Schutzen
01-12-2005, 06:56 AM
Yeah.... Tank hit the nail on the head, get a heavy enuf rifle!
Alot of the rifles out there are trending to pretty lite.
Some are 6.5 lbs. and in cals like .338 win mag! The recoil from one of those could be stouter than most .375 H&H's (back ya rite out frum under yur Beanie!).
Unless your back packin in where every oz. counts these rifles are a bit extreme. But if you are really gonna have to get one you can always add a few oz. with rings and mounts you choose, scope, and sling etc.
A 7.5 lb. rifle (bare) is prolly ideal wt. for the avg. dude if your recoil sensitive, after you add your scope, rings, etc. you'll be up around 9 lbs and it will be pretty soft for recoil and you can still carry it OK.

For moose, elk and bear hunting it's my Ruger 77 MkII .338WinMag. in the stainless/laminated model. It's very weatherproof and not too heavy to pack all day. For deer, sheep & caribou, the vote goes to a certain Winchester M70 Featherweight in .270Win. I bought the rifle for my daughter, but use it whenever I can. Sweet little rifle (I'd like to build a .338 to match it). And both rifles have Pachmayer decellerators installed on the butts ;) ...KF

I shoot a .338 most of the time with 250 partitions, but so far this year I have been breaking in my .300 win mag. 180 b-silvertips have worked VERY WELL!! But all round you can't beat the .338 180's at 3200 fps or 250 grainers at 2800 try to compete with that versatility, its almost like a .375 and a 7mm in one rifle:D

I see no one likes the good ol' 30-30 with iron sights, fast shooting, holds lots of ammo and it's light. I can hit kill zone at 200 yards, takes a while for the bullet to get there though. My woman gave it to me for Christmas and it's always with me. Come to think about it, so is she; beats sleeping next to some big smelly man.

Hey now, I got nothin against a 30-30. Honestly, my opinion is that almost any of the 30-ish cal rounds is fine for just about anything you'd wanna hunt. Any decent size/weight bullet going a reasonable speed through the vitals of anything will kill it, whereas even a shotgun slug in the wrong spot won't. Don't get me wrong, I'd still like a .50BMG if I had to shoot a grizzly, but I'm just sayin, a good shot is worth way more than a bigger cannon any day. :-D

Well, I have yet to hunt with anything other than a 30.06, used a borrowed Ruger MKII last year, which put a nice mulie doe down at 1578 yards. I now use my own Tikka T3 -wood stock, 30.06 calibre. This is a great gun-nice stock, action is butter smooth, and accurate with factory ammo to boot. I definitely am looking forward to a different calibre, not sure if I will go bigger or smaller. A nice deer gun or a nice moose/elk gun. I have always liked the feel of a lever action... maybe join the ranks of the 45/70 crowd. But my Tikka will always be my first love.

I think I am a closet long range wannabe shooter, and I plan to work at my long range shots over the winter. From hunting positions. All under the guise of "getting to know my rifle". The 7x57 will be similar but with much milder recoil.Handload with good 160 or 175 grn. bullets and it will take most anything.Might be marginal for Grizzly but no problem with Elk or Moose.

I find that when I am going out hunting and want a rifle I think is most reliable I grab my 300 RUM M700. Not always the most pratical rifle I admit but with out a doubt it is the rifle I have the most time behind at the largest variety of ranges. I have learned how that rifle shoots Hot, Cold, Clean, Fouled, With tape over the barrell... I'm just real comfortable with it.

I did however purchase a M700 SPS stainless 270 win this spring that is turning out to be a very accurate rifle. I however havn't had the experience using it as I have with the RUM. The 270 though, Shoots more accurately and recoils very lightly not to mention it is alot nicer to pack since it is a fair bit lighter (Even though remington rates them at the same weight) I just don't yet have the confidence with it at as many ranges and conditions as with the RUM. I hope to change that soon though.

It was pretty brutal, but I kinda think its addictive?? "Ouch, that hurts...Lets doing it again!!!"
But its not a load I'd want to shoot 20,40,60 rounds at bench like I normally do with some of the more shootable loads. This would really give me a flinch issue, and ruin my shooting skills. Not what I want. Its just fun to shoot into ponds and cause a giant guyser!!

My first deer was with a 30-30 and peep site. Then used Browning BAR 7mag for a few years. I bring my .270 along as a back up/spare on trips. I just bought a Rem 700ssdm 300 win and took a nice Mule with it last week. It will be a fine unit after I get more used to it.
My all time favorite is actually my wife's Rem 600 .308, a real tack driver that I have shot many deer with. I just might be looking at a model 7 stainless now to replace the .308 now that she's hunting with me again :)

Of all my rifles, I prefer to hunt with my Remington Mohawk 600, which is a .308. Because it's a short carbine, is light, easy to handle, easier on the old man, nothing to lose in way of clips etc. It suits my style of hunting-like creeping about in sometimes tough, tight bush and taking shots probably under 100 yds. I also like the 30 cal in bush.

My all-time favorite rifle to hunt with is an Interarms Whitworth Mark X Alaskan in .375 H&H Magnum. Using the 270 grain Hornady Interlock and 300 grain Nosler Partitions I have taken most big-game animals in British Columbia.
Unlike some of the higher velocity cartridges of today, I have found that animals taken with the .375 tend to have very little blood-shot meat.
The .375 H&H Magnum is also good insurance in grizzly country.
In a rifle like the Interarms Whitworth Mark X Alaskan the .375's kick (push) is not near as sharp or painful as of some of the .300 or .338 magnums in lighter rifles that I've owned.

I shoot a tikka .270 wsm and so far it's brought down everything I've shot at, including deer and moose. Just wondering if those who shoot a normal .270 have had good results on moose. I shoot 150 grain partitions now but the last moose i took i used 140 fail safes. Wasn't overly impressed. What do you other .270 shooters use for ammo?

I shoot a husqavaurna 30 06 .......works fer me and cheap on the ammo. Plenty of choice fer loads which makes it good fer any game i would wanna hunt.

:)Having owned alot of different rifles and calibres, Ive mostly hunted with
the 270 win. Having mostly hunted deer and the odd moose. And now for
off the Island hunting I am using a 338 win mag . A Ruger mark II stainless
a mate for my 270 win. But if I was to hunt with 1 gun it would be a 30-06.images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

i don't have a ton of experience with different guns, but my main gun that i use is a Remington 700 BDL SS in 30-06, topped with a Leupold VX-II, 3x9x40 (silver).

I use factory ammo, currently shooting 180grain Nosler Partitions by Federal.

Of the 17 calibers I load for, I favour my 25/06 for deer and goat, my 375 H&H for moose and bear.
But I like my 303 Lee enfield I started out with, and my 300 win mag, like my 270 and my 308 win has done well.
Would like to use my 243 more, but the first two are my main ones.

My favourite rifle is my Remington Model 700 SS 300 Win Mag, I can shoot anything under the sun and it can take a licking, as I am rather rough on my rifles throughout the fall.
My trusty '06 Model 70 would have to be my close second. Shoots like a dream but I use it as back up becasue I like ot keep it in good shape for sentimental reasons.

Since I hunt the Island mostly, I usually take my Interarms Mark X .243 with me when I know I'll be shooting in more open country for Blacktail.

That being said, I have bought two used Marlin 30/30's this last year for bear hunting. One is scoped and the other is open sights. The open sight gun is my "just in case" gun when I'm going for a walk and exploring.

I also bought a Parker Hale .308 last year in case I get an elk draw or manage to find some time to go moose hunting in the Interior one of these years. I have yet to fire a round from it. The wood is so nice I'm almost afraid to take it in the bush and scratch it.

I'm starting to carry one of my Marlin 30/30's a lot more though as I like the balance and size when carrying it and I like the heavier bullet. John

My Parker-Hale 7mm Rem Mag . Although I'm thinking of using my Savage .243 lever gun next season for Island Blacktail. Just need to get a clip and scope it.

7mmRem Mag. it has the energy that I need and is very flat shooting. My rifle groups very well and has harvested everything that I have shot.

I also once had a little Savage 99 lever in .243
Many deer fell victim to it when I used to hunt the South Island.
Very accurate gun, for a lever, and I miss it terribly. I once suffered from a temporary bout of insanity and sold several of my guns:wink:
I now have used my 30.06 bolt action exclusively the last several years.
I am very confident and comfortable to 250 yards with it and have taken several Island deer and bear. Plus one year I may finally get that illlusive LEH Island Elk tag. To me, I guess, it is the perfect "all around" rifle.

7mm RM-fast, flat and accurate. Knocks down anything in BC, as long as I do my part.

I've used one gun since I was a teenager and I still use it. I am 33 now. A Rem. Mod. Seven in .308 I bought at Harv's Outdoor Sports(a long gone shop that was here in Kelowna). The Bausch&Lomb 2-7 power scope will be replaced this year with a 3-9Bushnell or Burris and the walnut stock replaced with a Realtree HD Grey synthetic stock this year sometime!

bolt action 308 winchester - like short action, easy to get ammo, my BSA is a tack driver, most of my huntin buddies use 308s, although surburban bow hunter uses 30/06 and ohno likes his 300mag

For big game; Remington 700 BDL 30-06. Or even my Remington model 1100 12 gauge pump shotgun. ( have shot a blackie with the 12 ga.)

For small game; Ruger 10/22 Semi Auto

I might someday get a ruger Mini 14 .223 semi auto for Coyotes.

I think thats all I'll need.

I bought my 30.06 in 1988 from a local gunsmith. Took my second ever moose the first day I carried it hunting, in 1989. Took a cow elk and a four point mule deer that same year, with the same gun. I have taken 15 more moose since, a caribou, a cougar, two black bear and 14 deer, two being whitetail. Would you change guns ? I don't think so. It is a Ted Williams Signature Series Winchester 30.06 sold originally by Sears & Roebuck

My favorite is probably my 300wm Krico, Very smooth sleek action, but I like anything in 30 cal.
Another one that I really like is my 30-378 Wby built on a Brno action with a gain twist bbl, set up for 190-200 gr bullets. The only thing I don't like about this one is that it chews up 118grs of 50BMG powder per shot.

My favourite is my tried and true Winchester Model 70 in 3006 - 29 years and counting. Always has shot very tight groups, never had any issues, plenty of dead critters, and it just feels right.

Since this thread is back I'll add my favorites as well,
A Parker Hale .303 made in 1951 (the actual factory was scrubbed off for some reason by Parker hale) that likes Federal 180 grain loads that is the most beautiful lee Enfield sporter that I've evr seen
A Cooey 64B that hasn't got much finnish left but will shoot Federal .22LR holow points accuratly all day
A 12 Gauge Baikal coach gun with choke tubes and hammers that is usually loaded with 00 buck for a camp gun when I'm in the bush for camping or such.

Hey Dewey, from what my friends have told me (haven't seen it in action yet but I have seen the good old 6.5 Swede with 140 grain loads at about 2750-2800 drop moose like the hammer of Thor) the little .260 Remington works great and is a real marksmans cartridge.

I picked up a Browning BLR w/pistol grip in .270 wsm this past x-mas. I have yet to hunt with this one, but I love shooting it at the range and can't wait to take 'er out this fall. Tied with the BLR is the Browning bolt action (pre A-bolt) in .30/06 that I shot my first Deer with last fall. I've only been hunting a short time but, apparently, I'm also a Browning man8-) .

When a magnum BLR came-out in the long action, I stopped touching myself in the outhouse to the pictures of the .338 BAR in the SIR catalogue. Then I waited, and waited, and saved my money and never understood why they never made a .338 BLR, so when a like-new used 7mm popped-up I grabbed-it for 550.00, and took the other 200 i had been saving for the taxes on a new-one to have-it re-bored and re-rifled to .338 and never looked back.

My friend just bought the laminated stainless in .300 WSM, but hasn't shot it yet; but I am sure he has at least slept with-it. Spoooning at least once when the old-lady is-out is something every guy does but few admit unless they are caught in the act. He doesn't know-it yet but I'm gonna crank-out an auxillary cartridge in 7.62x39 in addition to the one he asked for in .32 auto for not selling the ones from his other BLR and giving them back to me for mine. That'll make-us even once again. This will compliment the Ruger mini-30 in stainless he bought the same time as me last year. Mine was inaccurate. His shoots well, and got him a 4 and a Nine point last year.

270 for deer hunting and a 300 WM for moose or elk.

My 300 is my go-to rifle for spring black bear now too, though with a tag in my pocket I wouldn't hesitate to use my 270 on a black bear.
