FISHERIES NOTICE: SALMON FISHING ON THE FRASER RIVER CLOSING AUGUST 14th, 2015

All anglers please be advised that salmon fishing closures on the Fraser River will be going into effect later today:

Salmon fishing on the Tidal Fraser (including the "banana") closes at MIDNIGHT (11:59 PM), FRIDAY, AUGUST 14th, 2015.

Salmon fishing on the Non-Tidal Fraser (above the Mission Bridge) closes ONE HOUR AFTER SUNSET, FRIDAY, AUGUST 14th, 2015.

The closures are necessary as the summer run sockeye have not shown up in test fisheries - estimates for the summer run component have been reduced from 4.7 million fish to 1.15 million fish.

Visit the Department of Fisheries and Oceans website as more information becomes available:

Fraser is only the entry way for them and they are going to struggle up the dry river beds up north.
I don't want to put them under any more stress because I have an idea of what they will have to do to spawn this year.
We could lose some runs of Chinook this year.

pretty sure it's not closed to ALL anglers.
wish they'd be truthful in their wordings and say it's closed to everyone "but" (so and so) people.

Thats what I was kinda thinken Captain Spalding. I'm pretty pissed about this. But from what I can see on the DFO site is that no one is allowed to fish.

RECREATIONAL - Salmon

Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0859-RECREATIONAL - Salmon - Area 29 (Fraser River Mouth) and Tidal Fraser River: - Immediate Closure of all Salmon Fishing

Effective at 23:59 Friday, August 14, 2015 until further notice, fishing for*
salmon is not permitted in Subareas 29-6, 29-7, 29-9 and 29-10 and the tidal*
waters of the Fraser River.

Subareas 29-6, 29-7, 29-9 and 29-10 are those waters also known as the banana.*
The tidal waters are those waters of the Fraser River from the mouth to the*
downstream edge of the CPR bridge at Mission, BC.

Current run size estimates of Fraser River Summer Run sockeye salmon combined*
with record water temperatures in the Fraser River have resulted in no*
allowable harvest and a conservation concern. The Department's priorities are*
to ensure that there is sufficient sockeye returning to the spawning grounds.
The Department will manage all fisheries to minimize sockeye impacts and*
provide priority access to First Nations' fishing for food, social and*
ceremonial purposes.
Recreational fishing opportunities on the Fraser River for pink and chum salmon*
are anticipated later in the season subject to available abundance.

Natives have reported almost 9000 springs and 60000 sockeye in the last month or so. I wonder how many they have actually taken?

the drift and set netting has to stop. The fraser WILL go extinct if the in river netting continues.
If only Chris Gadsen and nik basok could use some of their multi media voice and shed light on the true factors of the fraser spiralling into extinction. Instead of wasting their time dividing the anglers, try bringing them together to stop the real threat to our fisheries. Unfortunately their egos can't won't allow them to do this.

ABORIGINAL - General Information

Subject:
FN0841-Aboriginal: Sockeye Non-retention in First Nations Food, Social and Ceremonial Fisheries in Most Southern BC Marine Waters

Effective 23:59 hours on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 until further notice,
sockeye non-retention in Food, Social and Ceremonial fisheries will be in
effect in the following Areas:

Areas 11 to 21, 29, 111, 121, and 123 to 127.

The Fraser River Panel met today to review Fraser River sockeye and pink salmon
assessment information. The total passage of Fraser sockeye through the marine
assessment areas is still far below pre-season expectations. Summer-run sockeye
were expected to contribute a significant portion to the total Fraser sockeye
abundance this season, and to-date the return of Summer-run sockeye has been
very poor.

At the meeting Aug 11, the Panel approved a run size estimate of 1.7 million
Summer-run sockeye, which corresponds to the p10 pre-season forecast. At
current returns there is no abundance available to support continued First
Nations FSC sockeye directed fisheries after accounting for escapement
objectives and expected harvests.

Sockeye non-retention (non-possession) is in effect therefore all sockeye must
be released in marine waters. Commercial and recreational fisheries remain
closed.

daily, I'm seeing guys driving around town proudly displaying their dipping nets strapped to their trucks.
it's like they are totally flaunting it.

had someone ask me if I wanted to buy some salmon.
I told him I enjoy the actual act of fishing, not the eating of them.
the only fish I do kill and take home are salmon, but it was the trip that was the real treasure, not the bounty.

Someone didn't get this notice. A walk with the Mrs in Fort Langley last night had us watching (laughingly) 2 guys trailer their boats, they had fish.
