Hey Guys
Someone has to be first, so here is my Question, What do you use to shot fish?

Marc
12-02-2004, 06:27 PM
Somebody had to be a smart ass :D It's intended for the off season as I've noticed a lot of you hunters have also included pictures of fish in your albums. So use it or lose it. If I see there isn't any activity in this forum I'll turf it.

Marc.

browning auto 3" 28" vent rib barrel , and I am not making a joke, in parts of norway and sweeden they hunt pike in the slews when they spawn with shotguns, I had a magazine article on it a few years ago from a norweigian hunter I took out after spring bear , 1 can only sit back and weep that there are bigger rednecks overseas than here in northern BC

Back in MB I was walking around a lake with my 4-10 looking for grouse and saw a great big pike in the shallow water. Well to enjoy the shock factor from my Dad and having not seen a bird all day I decided.....what the heck.....I have a fishing license. The look on my Dad's face was priceless when I met him back at the truck.

I used to have a neighbour that went carp fishing in the Fraser valley with a bow. I gather it's an eastern thing??? Who in the hell would eat those big slimy gold fish??

Marc

I'm the type of guy who'll try anything once. We have Sobey's back east and they had some carp on for 99 cents per pound so I decided to give it a try. Well I'll tell, you I didn't even get the chance to swallow a piece and I started to gag. It's got to be the worst tasting fish on the planet. I'll never try it again.

Personally I prefer the old dynamite trick ;) Stuns them nicely and no picking pellets outta the fish. Don't like using frag grenades like the Yanks did in a vid I have from Afghanistan....too annoying to pick out the fragments

Hey Amphibious, There's this great invention that most other people use for fishing called a "fishing rod". No risk of getting gummed to death by Squaw fish! getting wet not required.

Amphibious

a fishing rod is for lazy folks :D

I prefer a 2117, with a barbed head, works great on Carp, and suckers.

300Wby works well. No need for a direct hit either. Yeah, I know, but I just had to try it to see if the myths were true!

Well I did shoot a shark once, I caught the shark while seining in the central BC coast. The shark was over 20 ft long. We got a strap around it's tail and winched it up out of the water. I didn't try but I don't think I could put my arms around by it's biggest part. We had to shoot it to get it out of the seine. All I had aboard was a 22 semi-automatic. I don't rember how many shots it took but he finally went still so we could work on him to get him out of the net. If you wonder why we didn't just let him go, I had another shark on board that was only about 8 ft long and loose on deck. He was snapping his jaws and sliding all over the deck. Not something you would want to even try to help. BCKID

turn them on their back and hold them there - only takes a few minutes and they calm right down. :D

Amph, how much does a decent spear gun cost? Would love to get out and give that a try.

Kirby

Amphibious
01-26-2005, 10:01 PM
that's like asking what a decent rifle costs. for BC waters alot $200 - $300 for a good one mid range one. you can pay much less for CRAP, and much more for high end... my next one will prolly be a Riffe Mid Handle.... $500us

if you do decide to get one lemmie know, as I can get FANTASTIC deals

spearfishing is a pretty cost effective sport all you need:

Mask
Snorkle
Wetsuit
Gloves
Fins
Gun
and a good knife.

if you take care of it the stuff lasts forever. if you have populations of carp in your area they can make for a fun hunt and helps control the population (invasive species). in BC inlad water you are only alowed to spearfish for Burbot, Carp, Squawfish and suckers.

Ya, I do alot of bow fishing in the spring, same limitation on speicies. Just curious, do you know if your allowed to bait them? I've always stalked them, when they are spawning in shallow water. Always wanted to try taking them with a spear gun. You guys have much good squba diving up there?

Kirby

Amphibious
01-26-2005, 10:48 PM
not sure if baiting is legail - need to find out. Carp are a major pest and spearfishing is a very effective way of removing them. haven't done much Scuba up here, mostly freediving. all of my spearfishing is done freediving too.

I use a .22Lr subsonic rounds... It is an easy sport! The most effort is to first use a fly rod to go catch the fish, then put them in a barrel... After that, piece of cake!

P.S. I hereby declare myself a freehunter...

we should go look for carp next time I'm in kelowna - have a couple extra guns :D
