Here are a couple of pictures I took this Sunday while hunting for Deer on the Island. We met up with 3 hunters(who I've already forgoten their names) with their dogs who were out hunting for bear.

I'm just curious how many of you know the name of the breed of dogs as I'm very new and didn’t' know either until they told me. The guys who own the dogs can't guess. ;)

Marc.

Is either of the two larger dog a Rodesian ridge back? I recognize the little dog but can't recall the breed. I see one daily at my kids school but am blank.

I am going to guess on the first one......American Foxhound??....or maybe English.....I think they are two different breeds but look very similar?? There is another breed like it called a Herrier or something like that. I only know this as I worked for a guy when I was young in MB who bred championship labs, beagles and there was often guys around with the Foxhounds etc.

The second one I am going to take a stab in the dark that it is some kind of coonhound with those floppy ears???

K1....very nice looking dogs....I am assuming they are yours, if I catch the insinuation between yourself and Marc.

Never have heard of either breed, but the Black Mouth Cur is a very nice looking dog. How are the breeds for temperment? I am assuming they are both used as tracking dogs?

Thanks.

The dogs belong to Walker and Bluetick on this site. K-1 and I were hunting and came across these guys and their dogs parked on the side of a logging road. It was nice to chat, relax and have conversation.

Do these guys dry ground for cats or run'em in the snow?? (or is it just bears?) My neighbour has 5 Treeing Walkers. They kick some serious pussy cat butt. Some of his stock is also on the Island I think. Sounds great when they wind our housecat at 4 in the morn....ahhhhh.

nice looking dogs. what is the breeding on the walker ?

Walker
11-15-2004, 10:30 PM
I don't know what strain the Treeing Walker comes from. She is purebred from excellent hunting stock but not papered. To me the way a dog hunts is more important than the breeding.

I would have to agree That papers dont catch game but records are very usefull in a breeding program (personal records or papers) and increasing your odds of getting certan desired genetics for your application .(some lines have more leg ,more nose, more Grit, more brains etc...)

I have a Walker(papered) and a BlueWalker (grade dog) that are used for bear and cat. I am thinking about breeding my Walker on her next heat cycle to a local Walker that is an exeptional Hound that is used soley for Cat (cold nosed,Really loud and strikes off the box).

Is that a Johnson collar ?

I just picked up 2 new ones from them and I must say i am really impressed with them . They are alot more powerfull that my ATS

Hey Keith
I am on the mainland , Your Catahoula leopard Cur and your leopard cur pups look real nice. They should be hell on Bears. have you had a chance to get the the pups out

leftcoast
11-18-2004, 09:22 PM
Bone Collector, thanks. they are pretty kewl pups. The male is the most gentle dog I have ever been around yet some of his relatives have been killed by bears,

Barracuda, I don't have the Catahoula anymore. Had to put him down. he loved chasing bears. Put his first oneup a tree at 9 months. On his own with no help from me. he is what got me interested in hunting with dogs. He was more dang fun than a barrel full of midgets. The litle female chased a bear today on her own. I didn't let her go too far. She had a hard time obeying me. It was just too ruff. Lots of blowdowns and the bear went down a creek. No way i could get in there to protect her.

The male was on one about 3 weeks ago. I kept him on a leash. I am in no hurry to have them on bears yet.

What are you hunting over your way? you doing cats?

yes bears can claim alot of dogs in a hell of a hurry , the old fellow I have been talking about with the plotts lost 5 or 6 I beleive it was 2 springs ago, saw a bear in the ditch a few hunder yards up the road and decided to cut the hounds lose, only downfall was it was a grizz and took out the whole team exept 1 if I recall the story correctly , he also talked about big black bear boars that will get into devils club or slide alder on a narrow trail through it and stand ground sucking the dogs in , I think you may need to come up for a weekend and meet the fellow hes realy worth the time for his wealth of information and vetranarian skills (yes he is quite the doggy repair shop) fixed my brothers setter this summer after a 12x12x16 fell off the sawmill deck and hit him in the front end, tore the front left leg all to hell , litteraly peeling everything off the bone and split the hide on the other leg, my brother rushed him down the road to the old guys place and he fixed him up in about 2 hours, dog has pretty much fully recovered now , and all I can say is wow , this guy knows his stuff, but then I guess its been his livlyhood for a couple of decades now

Bone-collector, that fellow sounds like quite the guy. The experience he has should be passed on. I had an opportunity to work with one of the best lion hunters this Island ever had and because i was young and smart I let it slip. Man do i wish he was still alive now.

I hope you get an opportunity to go out with that guy.

I would love to come up your way. We could head over to the Bull Coon's place and try some hotcakes with birch syrup. :)

Well one day we will get closer.

I will guess the first one to a good old fashion Treeing walker coon hound, and the second to be a black mouth cur.
