View Full Version : Senior Games

I am told that participation in archery at the last senior summer games was low and if the numbers don't increase then this venue will be dropped.
I want to encourage all seniors ( 55 and older ) to thinkm about attending the senior games in Nanaimo this year so we do not lose this chance for all of us to compete. I live in Quesnel and will doing my dammdest to get there. Please encourage all your club members of age to register. See you in Nanaimo. Mike

Glad to see you got the ball rolling here, Mike. There's no doubt that anyone old like us who hasn't shot in the Seniors Games is missing out on a terrific experience. I've been in each of the last 3 and they've all been great. There are numerous other events besides archery as well, everything from cribbage to hockey.

The site for lots of information is www.bcseniorsgames.org (http://www.bcseniorsgames.org)

Note that the province is divided into various zones and each zone is responsible for organizing their participants. They all have 'qualifying' shoots, which are mostly nothing more than a formality and a good opportunity to get experience in the format. But you have to shoot in the qualifier and these are usually held somewhere in the zone about late May or June.

There are also several age categories to keep the playing field even. I heartily encourage any and all BC archers 55 years old and up to jump into this with both feet. I'll be happy to answer any questions anyone has about this.

BTW, you can see pictures of last years event on the BCAA website at www.archeryassociation.bc.ca (http://www.archeryassociation.bc.ca) Click on 'photos' on the left margin, then go to 2006 Seniors Games.

Thanks again, Mike.

Hermit -- they better have, that is my category and my wifes. Also as stated they are broken up into age categorys so as I understand it a guy like me 60+ doesn't shoot against a young 55 year old. As Canuck2 states go to the BC senior games site and check out the rules. It isn't going to matter about the rules if we don't have enough archers participate. Nanaimo this year and Prince George in 2008. I know there are a lot of seniors out there, I see them at 3D shoots, so lets support the senior games. Mike

BowWalker, just HAVING hair is good enough. Hope to see you there, too. Will depend on whether I'm back in shooting shape by then, but I'm determined.

Sealevel, I don't think it has been determined yet where the games will be in 2009, but keep it in mind. Like oldtimer says, we need to support Nanaimo well to be included at Prince George, then support PG for the next one, and so on. We certainly have the numbers to do so!

Age categories : 55-59, 60-64, 64+
Also several equipment categories and genders separated.

I have just finished reviewing the results from the last few years and IN TOTAL there have been 12 archers !!! This is unbelievable !! Please please encourage all your senior archers to at least think about it. Looking at the list of names I can tell the caliber of the shooters is very high. I am going to keep on bugging you guys until the final days. Mike

Mike, the 2006 games had 12 medal winners, not 12 total participants. Not sure how many shooters there were in all, but still way too few. From all reports, it seems like this year will be much better.

Just to give you guys a heads up on progress on the summer games.

We had our first meeting between the director of the archery section of the games, and those who will be volunteering from our club.

The meeting was very optomistic and everyone left feeling it could be a very good shoot. I have booked the dates needed for the games. Sept 13, 14, and 15. All the rest of our ranges will be closed, so no gunfire to disrupt concentration.

There is camping available at our club. But only hydro hookup, no showers unfortunately.

Right now we are jumping through the hoopes to get funding from the games to build the targets and everything else needed for the shoot. The director didn't seem to think funding would be a problem, which is a good thing.

Anyways thats where we are at right now. With lots of luck and planning it should be a great shoot. Can't wait to see all you guys there.

Marc S.
Nanaimo archery chair

Ps. I'd like to put together a potluck BBQ one of the nights of the shoot. We'll be supplying some slabs of salmon and maybe even a mess of prawns. Just so the interior boys and girls can get their seafood fix while there down. If there's any questions about how good our BBQ's are, just as oldtimer. We had the pleasure of having Mike and his wife dine with us last year at our summer classic shoot. I've never seen anyone who loves salmon so much. :)

on a serious note- Do you know exactly what we will be shooting ? ie , a Canadian 900, what form of field event? and will there be a 3D course ? and if so will it be in the bush or in the field. Maybe Canuck2 can jump in and fill us in on what the last 3 years consisted of.
Dan start working on getting the time off. Sorry it is 55 and older I believe. Mike

There will be a 900 round
A flat course as well at the butts.
Plus a 3D round.

We're working on getting 20-25 brand new animals for you guys to shoot at. They won't have an arrow hole in them until one of you puts one into them.

Man this thread may be in contention for the longest running thread on HBC before we're all through. 6 months to go and we're at it already.

Oldtimer
From what I hear there are a few women that shoot in the games, definately bring the misses.

The 3d course will be in the flat section of our trail. Big question is do we put a porta jon half way round for those that can't wait
I'm gonna get flak over that one, hehe.

The way the shoot is held is up to the commitee. I'm pretty much a go between on this one. I have enough to run with the club right now. And the commitee has to make all the important decisions. I'm more or less the messenger, the guy who scheduals the meetings, makes a few phone calls, and the guy who chairs the commitee meetings. Hmm that makes it sound like I'm running it doesn't it :-( , how do I get myself into these things. No I'm definately just the messenger boy:)

Here's an update for the senior games.

The individual responsible for chairing the archery games has resigned. He was not from our club, but from a club in a town nearby.

We held one meeting with him, to go over the whole games idea and what was needed. He told us grand stories of how we just needed to gather information on what we needed, ie a supply list of materials. To both build proper 900 round targets, and to get new animals for the 3-D section of the games. It all sounded to good to be true, but we had never hosted such an event, so we went blindly along. So along comes the time for all the committe's to come visit the areas the games will be held. 2 bus loads of deligates, so I am told. The volunteer committe from our club asks the head director about funds available to put on the shoot. Funds that the recently resigned senior games chairperson had said were readily available. Well the truth comes out that there is no monies availble for putting on the games, but there may be after the games. I guess the now resigned archery games chairperson was doing some serious back peddeling.
Anyways thank christ we never borrowed money from the club, or I'd be up the creek right now.

Long story short. Unfortunately the individual that was to be archery chair for the games, would stoop to such low means. I basically feel stabbed in the back and dropped in the ditch by this individual. He in my opinion was only interested in his own needs, and if our club had suffered a major financial loss he would not have cared in the least. But I will save my anger for the next occasion I meet up with him.

But the games will be held, and will go on. I'm not involved in the committe, but only passing on information. They are getting all the peices together and mustering on.

See you there

Hello gang. Been out in the bush for most of the past 2 months and arrived home temporarily a few days ago. It's good to see the Seniors Games being kept at the forefront on here. We had our zone qualification shoot this past Sunday, so that was good timing for me. With my shoulder still far from recovered, I used a light-poundage recurve and will likely be in the recurve without sights category this year.

Hummer, you must first be at least the ripe old age of 55. Archery has several age categories - 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+. Up until this year, the upper age category was 65+, but apparently that has now been expanded as shown.

Then you need to decide on your equipment category. The 4 available are 1)compound with sights, 2)bare compound, 3)traditional with sights, 4)bare trad.

Prior to the games, which are in Nanaimo this year from Sept 13 to 16, you must shoot in the 'zone qualifier' for your area. Since you are from Chemainus, you would be in zone 1, Vancouver Island South. You need to contact whoever is your zone's archery rep immediately (sorry, I don't know who that is) and find out when your local qualifier shoot is, which could be any second now. Probably you can find out who to talk to by contacting your zone director via this link:

http://www.bcseniorsgames.org/admin.php

And here's some more cogent information; hope to see you in September.

Thanks Canuck2. Much appreciated. I'll start digging through the two sites.
I'm a member of the Cowichan Bowman, although I must admit, I haven't been too actively 'involved' as of late, but it is on my list.
- I'll have to make inquiries as to when & where the zone 1 qualifier is.
- Equipment wise I'll be shooting compound with sights.
- My age category is 60-64
- One quick question if I may, could you define or explain "registered member"? Are you referring to BCAA, and if so, I am a member.
Thanks for your help.

Well, it appears I'm set-up for the seniors games. The shoulder 'seems' to be ok so I've been trying to get in some short daily practice.
Trying to get back in the groove with a back tension release aid appears to be my biggest hurdle at the moment. I had been using a Carter Insatiable and with lots of practice & concentration, 'things' were coming around. When the let off is good, it's 'sweet', but any slight lapse in concentration and the shot turns ugly right quickly.
I have a Carter 1 Shot and a Scott that work fairly well so, considering the timeframe, I may go with one of them. In the long run, that may be a better course of action for me as that type of release is closer to the trigger control used in handgun & rifle shooting.

Sorry should have stated it is a long way off , Sept. 12 to 15 I believe , but wanted to get archers thinking about it now. Mike

Well all the targets showed up last night. A big thanks must go to the fine fellows from victoria for the loan of the target butts. From what I can see Rod and John are ready to put on a fine shoot. You guys should have a really good time. Wish I was going to be around to see it all come together.

Have a great shoot and BBQ dinner guys.

I just found this thread, and thought I'd add to it. It was a fun time, even to watch.
My buddy Ken and I had a great time meeting Jack and his friends at the games. All good folks.
We got there kind of late and missed lunch with Jack, but Jack took us out for supper after the tournament, and a little visit at his friends house.
Thank you very much Jack.
It was really good to meet you Jack (finally) and you've definitely got me wanting to come up there hunting with you some day. I'm looking forward to it.

It was a privilege to finally meet you.

Meet Jack (Canuck2)
I think Jack is praying here, just before he shoots,:D because he hasn't picked up his re-curve in a long time due to his shoulder operation last year.

Here's Jack making one of many shots

I'm pretty sure he was counting his fingers here to calculate his score ..

And here he is coming over after his calculations to blame Ken and I for his bad shooting ..LOL

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v336/buckee/Archery/Jack_Lucke_Nanaimo013.jpg

and again he blames me, by waving his arrows in anger ..LOL

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v336/buckee/Archery/Jack_Lucke_Nanaimo023.jpg

And here's his buddy saying, "Here Jack, use my arrows, they fly straighter"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v336/buckee/Archery/Jack_Lucke_Nanaimo024.jpg

And here's the real proof that Jack was using his fingers to add his score. Notice everyone else has already added theirs and left the field.
